I prefer one piece rods as there is less chance for things to go wrong. Two piece is fine also. Bought a St. Croix 4 piece once thinking it would be great. Yeah the tip likes to shoot off with your cast. I use these to tie them in the boat when portaging. Keeps them locked in real nice. Also if they are longer I made a handle so it was easier to hold the canoe on my shoulders. Can make make-shift rod holders when paddling too. Orange are good as you can see them if you drop them in the grass.

Bring at least two rods set up differently. Like one for trolling Lakers and Pike then the other for bass and walleye. Will also be nice in case one does break and sink very fast to the bottom of the lake (I've found out how fast they can go...) then you have a backup.

I also prefer using braid with a floro leader. That way if I get snagged my line doesn't break halfway up and lose most of it. Just tie on a new leader and your good to go. Also braid is nice in a pinch if you need some more line to tie a tarp down or something.

Another little tip is to bring one of those fillet gloves, some long hemostats and a set of jaw spreaders. The gloves are great for grabbing that 40" pike that swallowed your jig (nice grip on that slimy bugger).
