Gotcha. I'll give you one more suggestion then, a little out of left field: the Rev Sabine Baring-Gould. Nineteenth century folklorist/amateur anthropologist/bad romance novelist. Talks a lot about how old superstitions develop into folklore which then, of course, develops into literature. Here, here, here, and a personal favourite, the first chapter of this collection. Needless to say I think all those books are well worth reading for no reason at all, just cause they're really interesting books.
