You should not buy a fucking MacBook Air--you don't NEED a MBA, you WANT one. Buy a laptop you can afford. This is what I have, gets the job done. Look up laptop buying guides.

u/gavlois1 · 3 pointsr/FreeCodeCamp

FreeCodeCamp and Odin Project are similar curriculums but their approach is quite different. FCC does everything through the browser, whereas TOP goes through setting up your local dev environment, setting up the terminal, installing Ruby, etc. You could quite literally do most of FCC from your phone.

You can generally find decent low end models that run Linux perfectly around 300 USD regular price, but if you keep an eye out you can get them for under 200 like I did with this one. I got it for 176 to be exact. This one is stuck with soldered on storage that I can't expand, but to do simple stuff it should be good enough.

You could go with something like this one which looks like you'll get actually removable m.2 SSD with space for a 2.5 if you prefer.

Acer Aspire 1

$269 is quite overpriced though, I've seen it go for $180.

I've seen the screen in person, it's very good, 1080P IPS panel.

Actually the Acer Aspire 1 on Amazon fits the bill as well. Specd similar to the Swift 1

Have you heard of the ancient technology, known as a "Netbook".
~~
I'm not sure if anyone actually makes and sells brand new netbooks these days, since ultrabooks are all the rage.~~

Well, I found some on Amazon. In no way do I recommend going this route, but here you go anyway...I'd say Acer's 4GB model is worth the extra money, because Windows 10 basically requires at least 4G to be any kind of useful in my experience.

But yeah, no, in no way do I endorse this. Nor do I know if the iPad will mirror onto a Linux install either--though I'm sure someone has a package somewhere to do that...so I'd recommend trying the Linux approach; and if it still doesn't work, start looking for netbooks or "thin clients" of some description on eBay.

If you still didn't get one then
this gets my vote CPU is a little weak, but that the best you will get for this price range that is also Full HD and new not refurbished.

u/elvinelmo · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

If you are pretty broke the Acer Aspire 1 can run LoL decently at a price well below budget

Hey,

I agree with the Acer Aspire 1, but it isn't too powerful so I wouldn't expect much more out of it other than programming/general use. The storage is a bit small, so you can grab a 128 GB SD card to store everything but Windows 10 operating system. It has a 14" display. It is sadly not a 2-in-1.

u/adhdeedee · 2 pointsr/ADHD

Hopes this posts!! All these are grabbed from the Red Flag Deals site and Flipp app set to downtown Vancouver postal code

Depending how close to the border you are ordering in America, crossing the border and picking up in store could be cheaper but be aware of import laws.

If you aware aware this may break in two years a cheap ass Chromebook is probably a good investment while you get settled, 300$ is 25$ over 12 months so if the immediate budget can handle it might be good. Otherwise, Kijiji?

Had the same exact issue. I bought the Acer Aspire and a USB drive Samsung FIt for storage. Uses sublime great, and is super lightweight.

You can't go wrong with either. The process power should be fine. I'll be more worried if you actually need to install the desktop versions of Office or Adobe Acrobat Reader, in that case I'll throw this Windows Laptop (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0746NCNSG/) on my shortlist (price point almost the same as the chromebooks you mentioned).

u/vordhosbnn · 1 pointr/project1999

This badboy would do the job, only negative is the storage is 32GB, so won't be much cop if you are using it for anything but streaming/p99/general internet.

Not many options at that price point. You can check out the ones below.

One last thing. What do you think about this one?

u/ctarbet · 1 pointr/k12sysadmin

The whole premise is silly in the face of cheap, effective 1:1 solutions like Chromebooks and iPads and even tight little Win10 laptops.

VDI would have been a miracle 10 years ago, but it just didn't mature fast enough to ever be useful in any situation without a ridiculously massive doctor / lawyer type budget.

They wanted workstation level gigabit which was an LOL way back then... now our internet connection is gigabit. Times have changed. The VDI use-case is not K12 period.

Not too sure the signifances of the processors.

Celeron is dual core? i3 is dual core? i5 is quad core no hyper? i7 is quad w/ hyper?
seems like anything 2ghz dual core+ would be decent wouldnt it

Have you ever considered a Chromebook? Those things are actually pretty solid for what they are. They browse the internet pretty well and get the job done. The only flaw is the inability to run PC-based-apps.

What I'd recommend...

  1. Acer Chromebook R 11
    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01J42JPJG/
  2. Acer Aspire 1
    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0746NCNSG
  3. HP Stream 11

  4. Samsung Chromebook 3

You can also check Dell, Acer, or Newegg for refurbished laptops since you might get better performance and features for the money spent. You just won't get the "new condition" feel, or the latest hardware.

I'm finding it difficult to discern whether or not certain laptops have SSD cards in them. For one thing, in Amazon's product pages, storage is often described not as "SSD" or "eMMC" or "mechanical" but as "Flash Memory Solid State". Does that mean the particular laptop has an SSD?

It sounds to me like it does, but it must not, because for the very same laptop, the storage will elsewhere be described as "eMMC." For example, with the Acer Aspire 1 or Asus VivoBook E203NA-YS02, each are described in the title/product-name as having eMMC storage, but in the technical details as having "Flash Memory Solid State."

Adding to my confusion, whenever I select "Solid State Drive" in Amazon's search result filters, laptops come up that say "eMMC" right in the title and "Flash Memory Solid State" in the technical details. This doesn't make sense to me.

I would just use Shopineer or Product Chart instead of Amazon, but those sites seem to derive much of their product information from Amazon.

Can anyone advise?

Just look for 4GB RAM and any CPU that isn't a low end E1 CPU or N3060/N3050. The Ideapad 120S 14/11" is good, but make sure you get the model with 4GB RAM and Windows 10, not Windows 10 S. You could also try this one: https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Celeron-Storage-Windows-A114-31-C4HH/dp/B0746NCNSG/ref=sr_1_6?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1519299119&sr=1-6&keywords=acer+aspire but I've not looked at the reviews. Specs are decent though. Both of these only get 32GB storage, so you might want to try the used side of things.
