the laptop i linked is in Windows 10 S mode... you can exit S-mode for FREE and have a full Windows 10 Home... there are several guides out there

First of all, when people meme about it running on a potato: I've tested it on a potato and it only runs above 30 fps if you crank everything down (including render scale.) It's an unpleasant experience at best, but yes it will run.

I've posted in a few of these threads, but my recommendation is still this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07RF1XD36/ref=psdc_13896615011_t1_B079TGL2BZ

I know it is a bit higher than your price range ($10), but I truly believe it is the best ROI you're gonna get from a cheap no-frills laptop right now. As an investment, I really cannot recommend aiming any lower than the one I linked.

Edit: I forgot to mention, the "S mode" thing. It boots S-Mode Windows 10, which is basically a walled garden mode for windows. You can opt out of it and use normal windows without any sort of problems. Also, it does start with only 4gb of RAM, the motherboard does have another usable slot for a RAM upgrade if you feel 4gb isn't enough.

In the same boat and eyeing a couple deals from walmart. If you have not already, take a look at the Asus Vivobook for $249 if you're will to spend a 100 more totaling at 399.99 - HP Pavilion Laptop is what interests me.

Edit: another to consider is the Acer Aspire 5 Slim Laptop i5-8265U - $399.99

Would this be a good deal? I need a laptop for college and I was thinking of getting the Acer Aspire 5 since it got good reviews and specs for the price, but then this pops up

u/Cudn · 4 pointsr/buildapcsales

I don’t know much about laptops but interested in buying something cheap for my parents. Which one of these is the better buy? I’m leaning towards the aspire 5 for the IPS panel

u/gavlois1 · 3 pointsr/FreeCodeCamp

FreeCodeCamp and Odin Project are similar curriculums but their approach is quite different. FCC does everything through the browser, whereas TOP goes through setting up your local dev environment, setting up the terminal, installing Ruby, etc. You could quite literally do most of FCC from your phone.

You can generally find decent low end models that run Linux perfectly around 300 USD regular price, but if you keep an eye out you can get them for under 200 like I did with this one. I got it for 176 to be exact. This one is stuck with soldered on storage that I can't expand, but to do simple stuff it should be good enough.

You could go with something like this one which looks like you'll get actually removable m.2 SSD with space for a 2.5 if you prefer.

u/natermer · 3 pointsr/linux

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07RF1XD36/

That laptop is the discount laptop to get right now. Acer is a good brand for low-end laptops because they tend to use better displays then everybody else.

I had to buy it in a bit of emergency because my last beater laptop got one of it's hinges completely destroyed. Still works fine otherwise, but it makes it kinda worthless as a laptop.

I tried Fedora 30 on it, which wouldn't boot the installer properly. Fedora 31 worked fine.

The only thing that doesn't work on it, that I've noticed, is that the touchpad isn't detected correctly all the time. I found that I need to have something plugged into the USB port during boot-up, a mouse or USB drive, and then the touch pad shows up. Some sort of stupid conflict between Linux and the bios or something like that.

Otherwise 3D works fine (haven't tried gaming on it), suspension works fine, bluetooth and wifi work out of the box.

$310 Acer Slim 5, Ryzen 3 3200 + $100 Samsung 970 EVO 500GB + $64 Crucial 16GB kit. = decent little laptop for $474.

I really was holding out for the ASCII keyboard version of the Pine64 Pro, but it just wasn't in the cards this time around. Probably will end up getting one eventually.

u/LonerIM2 · 3 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

I would recommend this [Acer Aspire 5] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07RF1XD36/?tag=bkadamos_alltest-20) because of the following:

  • It over great value for money since it comes with 4 GB ram and 128GB SSD which is rare thing to have on a new laptop in this price range.

  • It comes with Dual-core AMD Ryzen 3 3200U which is roughly equivalent to an 8th-generation Intel Core i3 chip and it ranks as a solid dual-core workhorse.

  • Slim, sleek high-quality case and the aluminum lid gives the Aspire a premium look.
  • You can actually rotate the lid back a little beyond 180 degrees, meaning you can lay the laptop completely flat with the lid open.
  • It is lightweight for its size at 3.97 lbs

  • Comes with backlit keyboard, you also get a dedicated numeric keypad with a somewhat narrow design.
  • Battery life advertised Up to 7.5-hours Battery Life.

  • Comes with a range of ports, including HDMI, USB 3.1 & USB 2.0.

  • you can upgrade SSD and RAM up to 32GB according to this https://www.crucial.com/usa/en/compatible-upgrade-for/Acer/aspire-a515-43-r19l

if your budget is 300, get this, spend a couple of dollars more and upgrade the ram to dual channel. You'd be able to play titles like Minecraft, overwatch, DOTA, CS:GO, rocket league, left4dead, half-life, diabolo 3, civilization 6 and cuphead, provided you're willing to tweak your settings to low framerates and resolutions, and put up with a few performance issues for some of these. Don't expect any of the latest AAA titles to run though.

u/JagSKX · 3 pointsr/laptops

I generally do not recommend Chromebooks; they have their usefulness, but they also have some severe restriction when compared to a laptop running Windows. Such as printing requires a networked printer because print commands are sent via network commands, and you cannot install programs, though there are apps that can be installed. Chrome OS is basically just an internet browser so it is kinda like added apps to Firefox, Chrome, and other internet browsers.

For something that is both new and inexpensive, I recommend the following $310 15.6" Acer Aspire 5 Slim laptop with a dual core AMD Ryzen 3 3200u. The price has been $310 for as long as I can remember (more than 2 months) so it is not really on sale. Maybe the price will drop a little during Black Friday sales. There are limitations like only 4GB of RAM and 128GB SSD for storage; but they can be upgraded. Additionally, it comes with Windows 10 in S mode which I guess means "Security", but other refer to it as "Sh!t" mode. Not to worry, it can be upgraded to Windows 10 Home for free. You can search Youtube for a quick guide on how upgrade Windows 10 S mode to full Windows 10.

https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Display-Graphics-Keyboard-A515-43-R19L/dp/B07RF1XD36/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=ryzen+3+3200u&qid=1573094790&s=electronics&sr=1-3

I recommend upgrading to a total of 8GB of RAM by purchasing the following 4GB RAM stick for $23. Windows 10 requires more resources than previous Windows versions. The integrated Vega 3 graphic core is going to claim 2GB of RAM so only 6GB will be available.

https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-PC4-21300-2666MHZ-SODIMM-Laptop/dp/B07HJB2KSR/ref=pd_bxgy_147_img_3/131-1948150-3901546?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B07HJB2KSR&pd_rd_r=af021f61-d071-42aa-8247-aff43b68d567&pd_rd_w=7tiWu&pd_rd_wg=jdYFa&pf_rd_p=09627863-9889-4290-b90a-5e9f86682449&pf_rd_r=9N2Z5K1PBYA42S0QXQJK&psc=1&refRID=9N2Z5K1PBYA42S0QXQJK

u/[deleted] · 3 pointsr/suggestapc

You can run Minecraft and do productivity on just about any computer. Maybe get a nice laptop (and mouse) also for portability. Also, with Black Friday coming up, there are a lot of great options. Maybe look at some of your local tech store's ads to see if you can find some good deals. On Amazon, you kind of got an option between the Acer Aspire 5 and Acer Aspire E. The latter will be fairly faster and have more RAM. However, the first Aspire has an SSD which will give it a general boost overall in performance. In my opinion, I think the Aspire E will be a better deal, but you choose.

u/EnmityTrigger · 3 pointsr/visualnovels

You may want to consider a laptop instead of a desktop if you do not intend to play graphically intensive games. Even cheap laptops can run any visual novel.

Tbh I'd go for a laptop if you want to spend less than 500 usd. Desktops are expensive because you also need a monitor, mouse, keyboard etc.

Depending on your needs I'd go with a 15.6 inch laptop.

Try to find a laptop with a 8th Gen Intel i3 processor, with 256 GB of storage and 8 GB ram. This should be good for internet and office work while also playing Visual novels.

Something like this is cheap but and with decent performance https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Display-Graphics-Keyboard-A515-43-R19L/dp/B07RF1XD36/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=laptop&qid=1571258070&rnid=2941120011&s=pc&sr=1-3
But if you can spend 500 usd, then something like this will last you longer: https://www.amazon.com/Acer-i5-8265U-Keyboard-Fingerprint-A515-54-51DJ/dp/B07RF2123Z/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=laptop&qid=1571258070&rnid=2941120011&s=pc&sr=1-4

But look around for good deals. Sometimes you can find good laptops for little money.

It is quite impossible to answer that question properly, but I'll try anyway. I am not an expert, really, and I don't know your preferences.

Personally, I had my eyes on Acer Aspire 5, the AMD version. It seems to be, based on Amazon reviews and some Youtube reviews by reputable reviewers, lot of computer for the money. If you expand the RAM and add another SSD you can have a fairly decent computer for about $400. The build quality seems to be decent, but don't expect a Thinkpad or Macbook Pro for a $300 base price.

https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Display-Graphics-Keyboard-A515-43-R19L/dp/B07RF1XD36/ref=asc_df_B07RF1XD36/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=366315397608&hvpos=1o1&hvnetw=g&hvrand=16022148327369810509&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1020268&hvtargid=pla-774382930249&psc=1&tag=&ref=&adgrpid=74356900537&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvadid=366315397608&hvpos=1o1&hvnetw=g&hvrand=16022148327369810509&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1020268&hvtargid=pla-774382930249

There are some other models that have popped up on Amazon's best-selling laptop list that I found interesting too. E.g, Lenovo Flex 14, but I can't say anything about. Just check the expandability, reviews and especially the screen specs before buying. I would not go below FHD for 14inch or bigger screens. For smaller screens a lower resolution can be fine.

If you went to r/linuxhardware you would get a lot of people to tell you to get a used Thinkpad of eBay. That is an interesting idea, but it depends on how much of a project you want. The all-inclusive price of a used computer is little uncertain since you don't know what you end up replacing beforehand, but I could certainly see something like T450s or T460s making a decent budget computer for sub $400.

If you are into Chromebooks I think HP X360 can be occasionally had for a ridiculously good price from Best Buy here in the US. Including the student discount, you can get the 8GB/64GB often for $399.

u/techstar2000 · 2 pointsr/LaptopDeals

oh oh.. In that case then, this Acer Aspire 5 will allow you to stay as far as possible from the top of your budget and at the same time, get the job done very well.

u/EntangledLabs · 2 pointsr/Laptop

Would not recommend any of the older AMD parts - performance is nasty and comparable to Atom processors... in fact would not recommend any laptop at $100 except a Chromebook or old refurbished Thinkpad.

If you can manage about $320, I would totally recommend the Acer Aspire 5 Slim. It has a Ryzen 3 processor with good performance and better graphics than Intel UHD graphics, plus 4GB ram and a 128 GB SSD - a decent size for your uses.

Hi, I think that the cheapest you should be going is the Acer Aspire 5, especially for light gaming. You can upgrade the RAM and storage, which is super rare in your range. The integrated graphics should be alright for those games.

u/elvinelmo · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

At that price range the Acer Aspire 5 is the best laptop to get

Screen Size: 15.6" Full HD IPS Display,

Processor: AMD Ryzen 3 3200U,

Graphics: Vega 3 Graphics,

RAM: 4GB DDR4,

Storage Type: 128GB SSD

Comments: A best selling laptop because of its low price and decent specs for light use. This laptop is for people on a budget or those who want a basic laptop for browsing, streaming and working on a few documents.

u/Trukour · 2 pointsr/GalliumOS

I don't know if it counts as king, but the Acer aspire laptop they're selling on Amazon right now is a full fledged Windows laptop, could easily dual boot Ubuntu 19.10, and firmly sits in the Chromebook price range at $260. It also has a ryzen 3 3200u that benches out better than a Celeron 4100 (about the %30 faster on userbenchmark as long as you're ok with going with ryzen. BTW AMD apparently is know for running Linux better than a lot of Intel machines.

Edit: I also found this chromebook by Acer that has 8gb of ram, but a tiny 64gb internal memory and an M3-8100y processor that I can't find a benchmark for, but if you're looking for a Chromebook it looks promising.

u/Atroxa · 2 pointsr/blackfriday

Well...I purchased something last night on amazon. Specifically this item:

https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Display-Graphics-Keyboard-A515-43-R19L/dp/B07RF1XD36/ref=sxin_3_ac_d_rm?ac_md=0-0-YWNlciBhc3BpcmUgNQ%3D%3D-ac_d_rm&gclid=Cj0KCQiAoIPvBRDgARIsAHsCw09sinDe3xhMOH0ek4QRn_utDC9ITtZIrW-JTy2mwGiqaQnwoUcUIDYaAl_OEALw_wcB&hvadid=323377936460&hvdev=c&hvlocphy=9004250&hvnetw=g&hvqmt=b&hvrand=2069404303140467969&hvtargid=kwd-387400947485&hydadcr=25648_10973432&keywords=acer+aspire+5&pd_rd_i=B07RF1XD36&pd_rd_r=957467c3-818d-484d-8cde-be0c1a0cd2bd&pd_rd_w=xWpFx&pd_rd_wg=qe28F&pf_rd_p=e2f20af2-9651-42af-9a45-89425d5bae34&pf_rd_r=ZT7X9XTX24ZKKM5FJX6Z&psc=1&qid=1575038297&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER

It was $50 more last night at midnight. I contacted Customer Service because the item hasn't shipped yet but I couldn't cancel it because it's just about to ship. It was already reduced. I didn't think it was going to be reduced more. Anyway, the CS rep promised me that they would give a refund of the $50 once I receive the item on Sunday but I didn't realize it was going to pop me out of the chat the second it was ended. I didn't get a screenshot. He said he made notes on the order that he promised me the price adjustment. Hope I don't get burned because that $50 can be used on a stick of additional RAM I need to put in the machine. Anyone have any experience with this? Hoping it works. I missed the cheaper price by like a few hours.

EDIT: Just want to update that it worked but I am fairly certain it's because I caught it before the item shipped.

So this laptop is unusable?

u/Y3lo_ · 2 pointsr/computerscience

Honestly, you can still code and do pretty much anything to study computer science. I coded in Python, Java, and HTML on a dual core Core 2 Duo laptop and still got by just fine. I would reccomend an SSD though, it makes it so that when you click on a program it actually opens instantly as opposed to taking 30 seconds to open. You don't need an RTX graphics card or an i7, but I would recommend at least an i5 and some sort of graphics card, but an i3, Celeron, or Pentium will still do just fine. Intel HD Graphics should also be more than enough for any coding applications.

If you want any recommendations for things to buy at certain price points, here you go.

$300 Laptop: https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Display-Graphics-Keyboard-A515-43-R19L/dp/B07RF1XD36/

$500 Laptop: https://www.amazon.com/Acer-i5-8265U-Keyboard-Fingerprint-A515-54-51DJ/dp/B07RF2123Z/

$700 Laptop: https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Aspire17-3-i5-7200U-802-11ac-Bluetooth/dp/B01N9YH4WE/

For a desktop, you can build anything that fits your budget, but build it with an SSD, an i5/Ryzen 5, and at least a 1050 ti if you want good performance and to be able to do anything you like software wise.

Acer has a really inexpensive Ryzen 3200u laptop on the market right around the $300 price point.

It comes with a rather small Nvme drive (128GB) but that is easy to upgrade. There are 12 screws holding the bottom cover on, with that removed, m.2 slot and ram sockets are easily accessed for upgrades. They also provice (2) 2.5 ssd expansion bays as well. They include the interface cables and screws needed to use these slots in the package the laptop comes in.

I bough this one and added more ram and a second internal sata 3 drive to it for less than $500.00. I am happy with it but am unsure it will meet your needs.

To read real reviews on Amazon click to get to all reviews and use the drop down boxes to choose (recent) (verified) (all stars) ( and the specific product). I like reading the 3 star reviews as they point out pros and cons. This laptop can be swtched out of S mode. If you like it and have any questions, I will try to answer.

Friend asked me to recommend something no more than $500 for his wife to take some online courses. I see a lot of recommendations for the Acer Aspire 5 Slim Laptop A515-54-51DJ, $550 total breaks his budget. Still gonna suggest he get it, but I was wondering about something under $500. Looks new without reviews, but any opinions on the ASUS VivoBook 15 Thin F512FA-AB34? If he says "No way I'm going over $500" I thinking that one or maybe the cheaper Aspire 5 slim A515-43-R19L. Anything else I should send his way?

Thanks in advance!

That sucks. Affordable and capable quadcores only started in 8th gen intel and I don't think it'll go as low as £200.

Ryzen on the other hand has something close. They are relatively cheaper but driver updates are still slow

Around £250, here's a 15.6 inch with 4GB of RAM but I think can be upgraded

This is a HP 15.6", but with a HDD but you can replace that with a cheap ssd. Still £250

Goodluck with your quest OP

Here is the one I bought. I can run benchmarks and upload data on power consumption. Last night running C15 I didn't see watts for the CPU go over 11.

Daughter is a freshman at Harvey Mudd. All majors are STEM. Leaning toward engineering major but enjoying her current CS class. As of now they are using python and visual studio code (?). They don’t choose majors until next year as everyone is currently in core (everyone takes same courses including something from all of the available majors). She doesn’t play video games. Desires good battery life, light, adequate functionality to see her through her education at a great price. She took a hand me down MacBook but it’s WiFi has bit the dust. At first it was just loose and a classmate opened it up and taped it back but now they say it’s just broken. I’m not there and don’t know much about computers but WiFi doesn’t work and it keeps not wanting to get software update that’s close to current.

Looking at this. Would prefer 8GB and 256ssd but this would probably work and has good reviews but she thinks it’s big.

I'll check out the post you listed as well.

How about this? Acer Aspire 5 Slim Laptop A515-43-R19L

It is slight over your budget (currently on sale at $259.99) and not very light, but seems to fit your other requirements.

I have one and the monitor is pretty good in this price range. It only got 4GB ram and 128GB SSD but both can be upgraded yourself if you know how to open it up, and it has the parts included if you want to install a second SSD/harddisk. Keyboard has backlit. No comment on the touchpad. Speakers are crappy and unbalanced between left and right.

u/The_Adviser100 · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

at this price point I think this is your best option .

I did some brief looking into an Arena-capable laptop a few months back. This one looked viable: https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B07RF1XD36

I highly recommend doing some more research on system requirements and user reviews before making any purchase.

u/Mechanical_Potato · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

Sup dude. We're on the same boat. I live in Israel and I'm looking for a laptop at that budget.

I found two laptops:Acer Aspire 5,Ryzen 3 3200u, 4GB ram, 128GB SSD. (400 USD with shipping and taxes - 415 with an extra 4GB ram stick)

Laptop 1

Asus Vivobook 15, Ryzen 3 3200u, 8GB ram, 128GB SSD. (510 USD with shipping and taxes)

Laptop 2

They both have a 1080p screen - Vivobook has a better Screen to body ratio (88%), Aspire is an IPS display.

The Vivobook weights 1.58kg and the Aspire weights 1.89.Battery life is about 6-8 hours of normal use.

Gaming wise this laptops are the best for this budget. They can run cs:go at 1080p low at 60-100 fps, Fortnite 720p low 30fps, Overwatch 720 low 60fps.

You could get a laptop with better gaming performance but that comes usually at the cost of battery life until you get to the high-end stuff from what I've researched.

You could look into getting the Ryzen 5 3500u for 80-100% boost in gaming performance.

I hope this helps share with me with if you got anything to add.

Edit: made things more clear and readable.
Also I found another laptop with better specs (and a higher price)
Dell Inspiron 5000, Ryzen 5 3500u, 8GB Ram, 256GB ssd (575 USD with shipping and taxes)
Laptop 3

I will most likely be getting the Dell laptop.

u/George_The_Grill · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

You can just buy one online. Here is one that isn't great but pretty cheap for a laptop. I would still do my own research and find out specifically what I would want if I was in your shoes.

I’m actually close to pulling the trigger on this one...

Low RAM but room for upgrade. Ryzen seems to be better for multitasking app so I’m curious to compare it to my intel laptop.

u/koningdied · 1 pointr/laptops

Do not buy this thing. It has way to less storage and the storage wich it has is bloody slow. you will probably have to make coffy while it is starting chrome. 4 gigs of Ram storage also is by far not enough. you will need atleast 8 gigs. The cpu is verry old and wil not be able to run civ 5.

If you are buying a laptop and are planning on playing civ 5 and need touchscreen, take a look at this laptop.

https://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-Convertible-Touchscreen-Processor-81SS000DUS/dp/B07TWHYTSQ/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?keywords=lenovo+flex&qid=1570962791&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEzUzFaMFdITDZWNElBJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwODY0MTk1REZPVTY3MUJGT1JZJmVuY3J5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QTA3MjcyMDUxUlA5N0s5RElMSTRGJndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfYXRmJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ==

If you do not need touchscreen take a look at this one.

https://www.amazon.com/Acer-i5-8265U-Keyboard-Fingerprint-A515-54-51DJ/dp/B07RF2123Z/ref=sr_1_17?keywords=laptop+500+dollar&qid=1570962516&sr=8-17

If you only have a 300 dollar budged at max, this might be a option, but you probably wont be able to play civ 5 on it, and it is being bottle necked by the ram.

https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Display-Graphics-Keyboard-A515-43-R19L/dp/B07RF1XD36/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?keywords=laptop&qid=1570963829&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUFWQVRLMzU0RVhaOFQmZW5jcnlwdGVkSWQ9QTAyMTg3NzgxU0c3TlMyRE9IWFpFJmVuY3J5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QTEwMjA2NjIzRDk1WFBEMk1VQk8wJndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfYXRmJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ==

almost all the laptops under 300 dollars are shit, and most of the laptops between 300 and 400 dollar bloody slow to.

But if you can put your budged up to 500 dollar, you have way more good options.

This is the best selling laptop on Amazon (since I couldn't find any other source). They have not released the actual processor specs for the iPad, but I suspect it has only 2 cores but high boost clock, and they are comparing that to the published 'base' clock of mainstream laptops.

u/_65535_ · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

How would the cheaper variant fare?

u/hookypooky · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

Hi,

Ive just bought this laptop for my girlfriend and am looking to upgrade it a bit for her. We are working on a tight budget and I was wondering if I even need to upgrade.

https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Display-Graphics-Keyboard-A515-43-R19L/dp/B07RF1XD36/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=aspire+5&qid=1568698889&sr=8-1

Her use is gonna be just simple browsing, Netflix and MS office work.

A couple of questions:

  • Would windows 10 run smoothly on a 4gb ram? How important would it be for me to upgrade it to 8gb or even 16gb? (there is an addition slot for ram upgrade from what ive read)
  • She certainly needs more than 128gb of storage. I was considering 500gb as there is another sata slot available, but i cant decide between an ssd or an hdd. As I do not know which is more reliable and overall a better option.

As an addition, she is considering joining me to play a little classic world of Warcraft. My understanding is that the system requirements are very low. Would an 8gb or even 4gb ram suffice to play it?

Thank you so much in advance for your help.
u/electricnick260 · 1 pointr/computers

Update- the Ryzen 3 model of the Aspire 5 is only 310 dollars. It doesn't have optimal base specs for RAM and storage but you can upgrade both yourself and with 190 dollars to spare it wouldn't be hard to do on your budget. This is the new Ryzen 3 by the way. Graphics performance hasn't changed, but the CPU has improved slightly in efficiency and IPC.

I'm looking for a laptop to browse the internet with multiple tabs open, have multiple tabs of livestreams (like Twitch) running at the same time, and watching videos on YouTube. Nothing much else really.

I would like a laptop for artwork and drawing using a pen as well, but I think I'll get something else for this specifically as I'm not sure this price range is good for drawing art and doing commissions plus maybe best to have
a separate any day laptop (I'll take advice/recommendations though).

Anyway, I found two cheaper laptops that both seem great for simple tasks. The Lenovo one is touch screen but I don't know if that means a pen works, nor do I know how I could draw on it unless it folds back flat. But touchscreen alone is still really nice for me as my previous laptop had both pen/touchscreen and I never used anything but the touch screen to move around.

  • Laptop 1: Lenovo Ideapad S340 15.6" i3-8145U for $399.99 from Costco.

  • Laptop 2: Acer Aspire 5 Slim Laptop, 15.6 R3 3200U - $309,99 from Amazon (it was $269.99 recently and I'm kicking myself for missing it)

Of these two laptops, which one would you recommend for my task? The one with the best screen is probably my first pick as I'm watching things and prefer if the picture is nicer, I just don't know which would have a better screen. If I get answers, I may just order one today as I really miss having a laptop. Thank you for the help!

Budget: Up to $400 for a browser/video watching laptop alone. With pen/2in1 style for art/commissions/drawing, etc. I'm not sure.

    Country: USA

    Screen size: Any

    Screen resolution: 1080p

Touch screen: For art I need this I imagine, the other laptop I will let it loose if I get a better picture.

    Weight: Any

well if it has an i5 I guess it would be fine, but I searched for it and I found it was more expensive.

I would recommend the acer aspire 5.

there is a model with only an i5 for $509

another with an i5 + an mx150 discrete graphics for $559.

and if you want the cheapest laptop that can still meet your needs I would recommend the acer aspire 5 with the amd r3 3200u and vega graphics for only $309. (you might want to install additional ram for ~$15-20)

Acer Aspire 5 Slim Laptop, 15.6" Full HD IPS Display, AMD Ryzen 3 3200U, Vega 3 Graphics, 4GB DDR4, 128GB SSD, Backlit Keyboard, Windows 10 in S Mode(you can upgrade to regular windows for free) , A515-43-R19L https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07RF1XD36/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_ecWoDb4W9ZX3W

$319 From Amazon. Most new Laptops at this price range and lower are either Chromebooks or relatively shitty Windows Laptops with older Bulldozer AMD processors or Celerons. If you're willing to push your budget a bit, from a cursory glance this is probably your best bet for an all around pleasant experience. Keep in mind memory and storage limitations when considering this laptop, admittedly 4GB is very little. Don't take this as a full on recommendation but merely something to consider.

Corrections/Suggestions:

  • m15 has 60Wh battery for the cheaper model, battery life of ~3.5hrs, maybe 4hrs considering how manufacturers test battery (I own one, CPU heats up a lot as well)
  • New Dell G3 has 1660Ti Max Q
  • Y740 has 2070MQ
  • m17 has 2070MQ as well. Remove it IMO, not worth the money as there are much better laptops like MSI GE75 with a full RTX 2070 for $2000 which has a better thermal solution as well. The build is a bit inferior to m17 but better performance & thermals take precedence for gaming laptops.
  • As you stated, almost all laptops throttle, undervolting CPU or maybe even GPU is a solution. Maybe post the solutions: CPU undervolting using Throttlestop (https://youtu.be/14o69V6_ZCM) & GPU undervolting using MSI voltage curve editor, affects performance 5-10% ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Gzh6GAKyO4 ). New Helios 300, Triton 500 (latest BIOS) & Razer Blade Pro 17 are the only ones I know that have factory CPU UV, saving user time optimizing it.
  • R3 2200U performs a bit better than i3 for light gaming (10-20% better), maybe include this for those who can spend a bit above $300, fits multiple categories, has 1080p display as well: https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Display-Graphics-Keyboard-A515-43-R19L/dp/B07RF1XD36/ref=sr_1_11?keywords=2200u+laptop&qid=1566398790&s=gateway&sr=8-11

I didn't know there was a ThinkPad for $750, great find. I was suggesting people ZenBook 13 or ThinkBook 13 (i know those are a bit smaller & lighter, but ThinkPads are worth it).

Keep up with the good work. If mods deem the list to be good enough & sticky it, it will be good for many.

It would be my choice for a good basic laptop. https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Display-Graphics-Keyboard-A515-43-R19L/dp/B07RF1XD36/ref=zg_bs_565108_1?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=CBMP4550CQHQR285R11Z

Hey.

I plan on buying this laptop (link at the bottom) and plan on upgrading the RAM. Now, knowing a thing or two about computers, 16gb seems like it's waaayyyy overkill and a decent bottleneck for a laptop of this tier. I'm thinking of just buying a second stick of 4gb RAM and sticking it in the empty slot. What do you guys think?

This seems like the most reasonable choice to me. Save some money and such, since that's really what I'm looking for. No gaming, or video rendering. Just something I can tote around and take to school.

Specs it really good for that price range, if she just looking to do some normal PC usage, and it can also do some light gaming too, I ran Metal Gear Solid 5 on this with Medium setting with no lags.

Edit: also maybe this, a little better on the processor and GPU

It's not great, I had that laptop for a while(with a horrible celeron n4000) and the screen is pretty bad(720p). Something like this is much better, for a lower price. https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Display-Graphics-Keyboard-A515-43-R19L/dp/B07RF1XD36
