You're missing the biggest factors, really. The Acer V7-582PG has a 1920x1080 IPS display, while the X550LB has a crappy 1366x768 display.

In addition to the superior display, the battery life on the 582PG is dominant as well as the graphics card, and there is a massive gap between the 740M and 750M in performance.

Also, the difference between the i5-4200U and i7-4500U is actually only about 15% and you will generally not notice the performance difference.

Well, it's really up to you whether the 5.7 pound weight and 1.1" thick for is acceptable for your portability. If you put it in a bag, it won't be too noticeable. The Acer has a glossy screen, but it's more portable.

The 14" Acer V7-482PG weighs 4.41 pounds, while the 15.6" Acer V7-582PG weighs 4.9 pounds. Neither has a disk drive while the Asus does. They should provide a similar level of performance due to the same GT 750M (though the Acers have more DDR3 memory). For your games, either system should work, since they're not very demanding.

This already is enough, so it's completely upto you what you choose... Enjoy choosing whichever you want!

edit: I'd recommend google searching for a laptop with highest performance that is within your price range.

There are a lot of choices with gaming laptops so it would be good to list out the specific games you're thinking about and how you would use the notebook. Do you have a size preference? Does it need to be portable? Are you going to need a long battery life?

Like I said, there are a ton of great gaming notebooks, but here are a few that are in your price range.

  • Acer Aspire V7-582PG-6479 Good screen, battery life, and weight but mid GPU so fine for Minecraft, not a good choice for graphics intensive games like Watch Dogs, etc.

  • Gigabyte P35K-CF1 Great screen, noise under heavy load.

  • Lenovo Y50 15.6 Honestly, the Y50 is probably your best choice for price/performance. Screen is crappy, but apparently simple to replace and the GTX 860M is a terrific GPU for most games at decent FPS performance.

The resolution is high, which is just about its only saving grace. If you look at it straight on, it is OK, however viewing it from an angle makes it look terrible. In dark movies, even when looking straight on at the display, the bottom will look lighter than the top.

It can be replaced with a nice display though with high viewing angles. You have to carefully remove the bezel, carefully unplug the old one and remove it, and order a new panel for $90 to install carefully.

If you don't want to go through that trouble, The Acer V7 is the same price with an excellent display.

You could get an Asus N550JV-DB72T:

  • 15.6 inch, 1920x1080 IPS touchscreen
  • Intel i7-4700HQ + 8 GB of RAM
  • 1 TB HDD
  • Nvidia GT750M with 2 GB of GDDR3 RAM
  • Price: $980

    Or a Lenovo IdeaPad Y510p:

  • 15.6 inch, 1920x1080p display
  • Intel i5-4200M + 8 GB of RAM
  • 1 TB HDD + 8 GB SSD cache
  • Dual Nvidia GT755M in SLI config, each with 2 GB of GDDR5 RAM
  • Price: $899

The Y510p wouldn't have any problems with BF4 on high settings. The Asus would run it on mediumish settings. The only problem is that these laptops are somewhat heavy. The Y510p would weigh over 7 lbs with the power supply, the Asus a tad under 7 lbs.

Acer offers laptops with a lower weight, the Acer V7-482PG and the Acer V7-582PG. They have similar specs, but pack a ULV CPU compared to the standard voltage CPUs of the Asus (which has even a quad core) and the Lenovo above. Both Acer laptops are under 5 lbs (without power supply).

I have been looking at the Asus. My requirements are similar to OP's. I am going to use it at school and for some light/medium demanding games (LoL, Diablo3 and World of Warcraft). Is the battery life and weight of the Asus ideal for school? Computers this size and with those specs usually don't come much more portable than this do they? The DB71 is without a touch-pad and with matte display which I prefer. The other laptop I am thinking about is the Acer aspire v7. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00H7WF21G/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00H7WF21G&linkCode=as2&tag=gameaholicorg-20

So you think I should go with this one instead? http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00H7WF21G/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER This one seems like it will do everything I want and more.

Acer V7 with a 750M for ~$800 and it has a touchscreen - http://www.amazon.com/Acer-V7-582PG-6479-15-6-Inch-Touchscreen-Ultrabook/dp/B00H7WF21G

The Lenovo Y40 is ~$850 and it fits your needs but it's a 14" non-touch screen - http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/lenovo/y-series/y40/

Recently I helped my friend settle on an Acer Aspire V7-582PG-6479 when it dropped to $750. She loves it but I wouldn't recommend it now seeing as its back up to $850.

The other options I'd found for her were

ASUS N56JN-MB71 (Asus info page. The most powerful processor by far, kind of bulky but looks mostly metal + IPS and backlit keys)

Acer Aspire V3-572G-54L9 (overall pretty good bang for the buck although its just a TN panel not an IPS screen and lots of plastic)

ASUS X550LNV-NB51 (the price on this one has fluctuated a lot lately so if interested, keep an eye on it and it may drop to $630 like it was a couple days ago.

She didn't want a 14" notebook but I prefer them. I'm very impressed with the Acer Aspire V7-482PG-5842 and it's price. Although it may take awhile to ship.

This Acer V7-582pg seems to be around what I'm looking for.

But I'm not sure which configuration to choose. One has Gt 720 and i7 and the other has Gt 750 and i5 at around the same price.

Edit: Never mind. The i7 version only has a 1366 x 768 screen.

With a 15.6" 1366x768 display it's actually a rather poor option for $800 regardless of what else the laptop has. 1366x768 resolution in a 15.6" display makes things onscreen rather large, the resolution itself doesn't let you fit much onscreen, and almost all displays in laptops that are 15.6" with 1366x768 resolution are low-grade display panels that exhibit grayish blacks and an overall washed-out look due to poor contrast, as well as severely-limited viewing angles.

In addition, the GT 740M (GK208 variant) is a rather underperforming GPU compared to what you can get for $800 (along with a decent display) and the "i7" CPU is more marketing fluff than useful.

Something like this is a much better option. 15.6" 1920x1080 IPS display, and a NVIDIA GT 750M.
