PlayerUnknowns Battlegrounds is a pretty demanding game... This Acer VX 15 with the powerful 7th gen quad core i7 processor, 16 GB RAM, fast SSD and solid gtx 1050 ti dedicated graphics card will run it pretty well and of course, will get all your school tasks done.
I just got the new Acer vx 15 laptop. I opted for the one with and i7 and 1050ti. It's great. Handles rust like a champ. The only negative thing is the 256 gig ssd it comes with but they will send you an extra sdd bay to install yourself free.

The one I got was the higher end one but I believe it starts out at 799 with an i5.
The Acer Aspire VX 15 for $1000 would be a good option for you. It has an Intel Kaby Lake i7-7700HQ processor, 16gb ram, 256gb SSD, and a GTX 1050 Ti dGPU which will be great for playing tons of games. The display is a 15.6" 1080p IPS display, weighing 5.5 lbs, with a 6 hr advertised battery life. Overall its a higher end option with quad core i7 processor.
If you wanted a more sleek design, the Asus VivoBook M580VD for $1050 is another option with a dual HDD + SSD setup if you have a larger gaming library.
If you're looking for more suggestions or are interested in getting a better idea of options on the market, I suggest taking a look at my Laptop Suggestion Guide. Best of luck!
again, why are you only going for other overpriced laptops instead of reasonable priced laptops? why avoid the actual ones that refute your argument? Nobody is arguing that macbooks are the only overpriced laptops, NOBODY is, but they sure as hell ARE overpriced
-------
literally just a quick search: https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Aspire-Gaming-GeForce-VX5-591G-75RM/dp/B01N12YZ7B/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1495823671&sr=1-1&keywords=laptop&refinements=p_n_feature_four_browse-bin%3A2289792011%2Cp_n_feature_twelve_browse-bin%3A9521908011%2Cp_n_feature_five_browse-bin%3A13580790011
a macbook with the same specs 15", 16GB DDR4 ram, 256GB SSD, 7th gen i7, with a way worse graphics card (Radeon 460 Pro [benchmark score 6963] vs this laptop's 1050 TI [benchmark score 8911]) would cost $2,900
so you're telling me, a $2,900 macbook with a worse graphics card all else being the same is not overpriced vs this $1000 laptop? Are you going to then argue to me that "build quality" is worth an additional $1,900? lol please that's absolutely laughable
you're wrong, they ARE overpriced.
don't get me wrong, I don't judge, if you want to buy an overpriced laptop because of brand name, more power to you. but don't try to argue that it's not overpriced, because you're wrong it absolutely 100% is overpriced and using other overpriced laptops as an argument isn't an argument
So it seems like the performance/storage specs are similar on the Gigabyte P55Wr7-KL3 than the Eluktronics P650HP6 for the same price except for the current $150 coupon.
Does anyone happen to know how they match up in heat management and build quality? After having overheating issues with my current laptop's GPU and CPU, these factors and customer service matters a lot to me.
If both of their customer service stories are bad then I might as well get the Acer Aspire VX 15 as even with less performance, the cooling and customer service should be good.
In addition, if you're looking to buy a laptop with a GTX 1050 or 1050 Ti card, I would advise against buying the Dell Inspiron 7000 Gaming (7567), unless you really like the color gray (or are planning to replace the display).
The laptop uses a very low quality TN panel, with poor contrast and viewing angles, that render a grayish gradient in place of solid black, and produce an overall 'washed out' look. A screen this poor shouldn't exist in laptops costing this much, IMO, and the good news is you don't have to settle for it.
The following laptops deliver similar performance for a similar price, with much better display quality.

These models will also be available in many other countries. For the Acer Aspire VX 15, check to make sure you're looking at an IPS config, as certain earlier releases used low quality TN panels. For the Clevo N855HJ, make sure you have the option to choose the IPS panel.
Also know that TN isn't inherently bad, it's the low quality non-WVA kind used in the Dell Inspiron 7567 that's bad. This isn't me bashing all TN panels because the viewing angles aren't perfect. A number of TN panels are perfectly fine, including most older TN 1080p laptop displays, most 120Hz TN laptop displays, and most TN desktop monitors. This is Dell's use of a very low quality non-WVA-type TN panel (to be more specific, a lottery of at least three different similarly-poor non-WVA-type TN panels) in a product line that has historically used IPS, and that is in a price bracket where in my opinion we shouldn't be seeing displays like this.
As a final note, while the Dell Inspiron 7567 is perhaps the most infamous, it isn't the only higher-priced laptop with a low quality display. These higher-priced laptops use low quality displays as well.
I currently have a Lenovo Y50-70 and I am not a fan of it. While it does get the job done and it has served me well for the last several years, it has too many problems for me to recommend Lenovo to someone. I know a lot of people who love Lenovo for their cheap products, but I feel very burned by them.
Based on your usage, I would say that your minimum specs would be a quad core processor, a discrete GPU, and 16gb of RAM or more.
Here are a few links to ones that should easily meet your needs:

Out of all of these I would say that the Dells and the MSI are the best. Acers are ok, but I consider them only slightly better quality than a Lenovo. At this point it mostly comes down to which brand you would want and which laptop looks the nicest to you. Personally I don't like the "gamer" look that the Acers have (and most laptops with a discrete GPU in them), so I would lean towards one of the Dells because they look the least "gamer" to me.
The Acer Aspire VX 15 is a good choice for music production
The only thing you might want to do is add an HDD as 256 GB will run out pretty quick. The 7th gen i7 processor will do wonders for you as the Processor is THE most important thing that comes to FL performance. 8 GB RAM is the minimum need for music production and you get double that at 16 GB. This laptops also comes with a GTX 1050Ti graphics card (not needed but it cant hurt). You also get an IPS display which gives you wide vewing angles for a good price
Well honestly, I am not a big fan of MAC, but when it comes to "fantastic Display" there is no comparison to it. It is a proven fact.

With that said, i'd say you get yourself a gaming laptop.
This one is nice

Alternatively, you can have a look at various lists like this to get some help.

This is what I was going to get. Just need a bit more time for budget reasons.
SSD will improve speed, but leave you a little limited on space. However, in my case the i7 and 16gb ram, which almost seems like over kill, more then makes up for that. I would just get a game drive or something to hold more games.
It's that one but the top model, which is $100 more and has the i7 7700. Not sure about price since I got mine from amazon. Also the screen on the one I got is IPS.
Here's the link. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N12YZ7B/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N12YZ7B/?tag=lapninj-20 this is a really good gaming laptop for you :)
there are better options that are within your budget like this Acer Predator Helios... you really dont need a 4k screen and i realized you would like something with a discrete gpu and this acer comes with probably the best gpu within that budget range. or even this Acer Aspire VX which is capable of an additional hdd if you need more space for you photos.
yes can upgraded you could also take a look at the Acer Aspire VX 15 Gaming Laptop it has 16gb of ram.
Definitely not a bad deal. But this seems comparable.
Get this one by acer https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N12YZ7B?ie=UTF8
i7-7700HQ
16gb ddr4 ram
256gb ssd
windows 10 OS
4GB Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050Ti GPU
15.6 inch Full HD display..... that's the best specs you can get under $1000 but if you need a laptop with good build quality than you should buy dell 7567 but buy it with IPS display panel as it also comes with TN panel which sucks....
The form looks funny and hard to read, but if you want somethiing for gaming under 1k then I would recommend this Acer Aspire VX 15 because it comes with everything you need , i7 quad core CPU which is one of the best in the market and great for your usage, 16 GB of ram for smooth multitasking, Good SSD storage of 256 GB for faster boot up and loading, Full HD IPS screen which is a must have for this price range, high build quality, very good heat management, decent battery life, 1050Ti GPU that should be able to handle most modern games on high settings with very good FPs, and it is within your budget.
If you can push your budget a little you can get this acer because it comes with 1060 GPU but it is also heaiver at 5.95 lbs.

I would suggest not going lower than 1050ti as a graphics card. This last link is a good sight for bare bones build that you can customize. Or at least it was. I've personally have been keeping an eye on the Acer predator Helios
Acer aspire VX 15
I have it since July and it's a beast, can run anything you throw at it and its an amazing workstation, helped me a lot with college video editing and science papers.
Here's a link if you want to buy it:https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Aspire-Gaming-GeForce-VX5-591G-75RM/dp/B01N12YZ7B
I recommend buying the laptop + game drive bundle because it's totally worth it.
With this budget, you have to understand that you will have to make sacrifices to get an all round good laptop with decent battery life and weight since you are going to be video editing you will need an i7 and a dedicated gpu
Acer vx 15 i7-7700HQ/GTX 1050ti/16GB RAM/256GB SSD and you can contact Acer and they will send the HDD bracket so you can add your own
Dell Inspiron 7567 i7-7700HQ/GTX 1050ti/16GB RAM/128GB SSD/1TB HDD
Lenovo Y520 i7-7700HQ/GTX 1050ti/16GB RAM/128GB SSD/1TB HDD
The Dell has the best battery but its the most expensive in these 3, the screens aren't the best on the market as they are around the $1000 price range.
The Acer Aspire VX 15 is a pretty good performing laptop with the GTX 1050Ti and i7-7700HQ and the feature you'll probably want, since you do editing, is the IPS display and it has it.
Do you happen to live near a Microcenter? They have the same one, same price but with a bigger SSD (256GB).
Amazon and Microcenter have the Acer Aspire VX 15 for $999 as well. The MC version has a bigger SSD (512GB).
If you are near a MC you should also check out the Acer Aspire V17 Nitro Black Edition VN7-793G-717L. Is only $200 more ($1,199); has a i7-7700HQ, GTX 1060 6GB, 16GB DDR4 RAM, 512GB SSD and built in tobli eye tracking.
What about this?
I would go with the Acer Aspire VX 15 Gaming Laptop Decent build and design, Excellent price/performance ratio thanks to the latest generation Intel CPU 7th Generation Intel Core i7-7700HQ Processor and NVIDIA Pascal GPU NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti with 4 GB of dedicated GDDR5 VRAM , Above average battery life for an entrylevel gaming notebook,15.6inch Full HD 1080p widescreen IPS display,16GB DDR4 Memory, 256GB SSD.
I'm actually looking for a laptop from 14" to 15.6".
I would jump on this Acer, but it doesn't have a TB3!! :(
I'm getting to a point where a 1050Ti is not worth it, when a 1060 is only ~$150-$200 more. And if they go on sale, even better.
So your criteria is quite possible to achieve, except for that 13.3 inch form factor you require. The only good 13.3 inch computer for gaming is the Dell Alienware 13, which starts at $1000, but weights between 5 to 6 pounds depending on what type of graphics card you want with it.
Currently, there are no 13.3 inch gaming laptops that are under $850, but the best bang for you buck is the Acer VX15 on Amazon (btw not sponsored by Acer). It has a 15.6 inch 1080p IPS display (so no garbage TN panel here like the Ideapad 710S), has a 7th gen Intel Core i7-7700HQ (this is 4 times faster than the Ideapad 710S), has 16 GB of DDR4 RAM, has 256 GB of fast SSD storage (500 MB read, 300 MB write), and has an overclockable GTX 1050 Ti card, which is over 2 times faster than the Intel Iris 540. And it also weighs around 5 pounds. To round it off, it only costs $1000.
No AMD mobile graphics card can compare to Nvidia's 1050 Ti, and when combined with that i7 processor, the Acer VX15 will run WAY FASTER than the Lenovo Ideapad laptops. Even the AMD card on the $2400 MacBook Pro is worse than the 1050 Ti.
Below is a link for the Acer VX15 laptop (and plus it doesn't look like a gaming laptop, it looks like an ultraportable to me):
https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Aspire-Gaming-GeForce-VX5-591G-75RM/dp/B01N12YZ7B/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1487727573&sr=8-1&keywords=acer+vx15
This one is similar to the one posted.. https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Aspire-Gaming-GeForce-VX5-591G-75RM/dp/B01N12YZ7B/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1487631112&sr=8-2-fkmr0&keywords=aspire+vx15
Only thing is it doesn't have a mechanical hard drive.. It has a 2.5" bay but not the hardware to put a hdd in.
The only laptop that would be able to play games at a resonable framerate is Number Two. It has a dedicated GPU (Graphical Processing Unit).
As for an alternate: Acer Aspire VX 15
If you want to play games on a laptop, your budget should start at round $800 and go up from there, unless you don't mind having a refurbished computer or an older model.
Made a post on suggestalaptop, but nobody replied. Hoping I can have some better luck here, what's the best gaming-capable laptop for <=$1800 CAD? Trying to help set my buddy up.
My original post with more details (I don't know if my spoiler is working, stuck on mobile with no method of viewing outside my app):

<=$1800, Canada
Best gaming-based specs for money but with good battery life for non-gaming tasks.
Not too relevant, at this price and performance bracket I imagine things don't get too heavy or thick anyways. The thin+light/notebook form-factor is pretty nice and there are some that seem to accommodate these specs.
Windows 10 would be best.
15.6" or 17.3" would be preferable to smaller screens.
He's never owned a PC before, but based on what he wants to try and plays on his PS4 he'll be playing games like BF1 and probably the new Star Wars BF2 when it comes out, PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, Story and Puzzle games like Life Is Strange and Walking Dead, etc, and maaybe I can get him into some RTSs.
I want to aim for 60+ FPS 1080p at High-Ultra settings. G-Sync would be nice but not a must-have for sake of budget. The screen doesn't need to have a high refresh rate.
He's going to be using it for school eventually so the keyboard needs to be decent enough to type on a lot with no significant irregularities. Also a optical drive would be great since he loves to collect CDs, but we're willing to sacrifice this for improvement in other areas (like graphics and battery life) and can get an external optical drive.
I'd like him to get a pretty decent screen on it but those seem hard to find in this price range and which are actually available in Canada, so that's less of a priority I guess. Also, if the shipping of the laptop is going to take longer than a month to our location (central Alberta), then we can't consider it, since my buddy is going on a trip to Europe and needs it before then.
These are some laptops on Amazon.ca I've already looked at a decent amount, ranked from most to least preferred based on specs and reviews:

I like the better power of the 1060 over the 1050Ti, but don't want to sacrifice on (7200RPM) HDD storage at the same time.
Thank you very much for any help you can provide!

Here's an Acer for 950$ from a quick search. It has a 1050ti, a 7300HQ and a 256GB SSD (you may want to get a hard drive on topif that isn't enough. Use this laptop as a guideline and look at the ones in related. Just don't buy anything with a U processor, they only have 2 cores. And as people have said, if you choose a Lenovo, you might wanna do some cleaning for bloatware before you do anything else on it.
Thanks for the input. I've seen that one. Was my first pick.
But after reading several bad reviews i looked elsewhere.
I also looked at the Helios, same thing..
It seems the Acer QC is not that good, imo.
You say for PUBG you prefer 1050 ti over 1060 3gb?

Or you can choose the one with core i5
No it was this one, but with an i5 and 100 dollars cheaper.

For some reason, I'm hesitant to buy Toshiba (past experiences). Do you have thoughts on the Acer Aspire VX 15 vs. the Nitro you previously mentioned?
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N12YZ7B/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER
I do like that the difference seems to be screen size vs. specs, and I'll take specs over that 2" every time. I'd certainly end up buying a 2TB HDD soon, too. Thoughts?
ALSO: Thanks so much for the assistance!
Depends on what type of editing you're doing. Cutting clips like you said, with no effects or if you run the preview mode 1/4th.
Going lower into the $400 and lower range you want to look for the fastest cpu you can (most ghz), while making sure it's a 4 core cpu. Note that if you do go lower you'll be waiting a long time for things to happen, it will stagger a lot, rendering will take forever, etc. Video editing is a very taxing thing for your pc.

Try to find one that has a 1050ti, there's a bunch, and with your budget you should be able to afford it. Something like this, has an i7 mobile and a desktop grade 1050 ti that will wipe the floor with that mobile GPU.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N12YZ7B/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1
what about this one?
According to /r/LaptopDeals
You can look for them in Amazon and Newegg.
Acer also has some really powerful laptops for the price.
This would be quite a bit better. Will play a lot of games and will render anything you need in college. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N12YZ7B/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_1F.Gzb3WRFJPJ
It's not that out of the ordinary. It's competing with laptops like the Dell Inspiron 7567 and the Acer Aspire VX 15.
That being said:
Acer Aspire VX 15 Gaming Laptop, 7th Gen Intel Core i7, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti, 15.6 Full HD, 16GB DDR4, 256GB SSD, VX5-591G-75RM https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N12YZ7B/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_lIfVAbXZ21HHX
I'm not a professional, just a noob, but I wanted a computer that could run Unity, Blender, and Steam. It does all that and more. Best computer I've ever had.
FO4 is pretty demanding. Go with an Acer VX 15 or a Y520, or maybe a Helios 300 if you have $50 more bucks than 1000.

I personally own the Acer Predator 17X but its wayy out of ur budget
Are you dead set on 13"? I have this.
Adding to what /u/greychostvol1 has already suggested:
https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Aspire-Gaming-GeForce-VX5-591G-75RM/dp/B01N12YZ7B/
depends on the games. you probably wont be able to run witcher 3 on max settings but options like this v15 which is plenty for fast gaming, but this asus buisness hurts your back a LOT less and wont give you the notorious 2 hour battery life of gaming laptops and can run esport games like overwatch decently and will feel a lot nicer doing it.
Some sellers on amazon ship to australia though - in that price range you may get some solid laptops like: https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Aspire-Gaming-GeForce-VX5-591G-75RM/dp/B01N12YZ7B/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1491833369&sr=1-1&keywords=gaming+laptops&refinements=p_36%3A-120000 (1050ti = performance is roughly on par with GTX970m) you need to buy some separate 2.5" HDD for mass storage though
I see...... Good build,Quality keyboard, less than 7lbs...... in that case i would reccommend the new [Acer Aspire VX 15] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N12YZ7B/ref=psdc_13896615011_t2_B01LD4MGSA) ....... This laptop comes with full HD 15.6-inch TN panel, Intel Core i7-7700HQ ,NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti and the cooling design consists of two cooling fans separated near both ends of the chassis connected to the heat sinks with heat pipes to make sure its super cool..... it's also only 5.51 lbs
https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Aspire-Gaming-GeForce-VX5-591G-75RM/dp/B01N12YZ7B/ref=sr_1_5?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1500082069&sr=1-5&keywords=acer&refinements=p_36%3A45000-99999999&th=1
I7-7700HQ
1050ti
6 hrs of battery life while doing things
and about 3hrs battery while gaming
also has the option to add an internal hdd or sshd
comes with 256gb ssd as the boot drive
This one can handle it pretty well: https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Aspire-Gaming-GeForce-VX5-591G-75RM/dp/B01N12YZ7B/ref=lp_8588812011_1_3?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1500309381&sr=1-3
It has a good processor and gpu, it's good since overwatch is a processor heavy game. It also has 16 GB of ram which is good for ex. editing. It comes at a price of 1000$, but I think it's a fair price considering how good it it. Also it has an SSD for a fast boot.
Hope I helped!
Edit: If you want more than 256 GB storage you need to by a second hard drive and the kit for it, more information in the amazon page.
If you want a gaming laptop, I wouldnt buy from Lenovo. The AMD cards in them are generally less powerful then the NVIDIA Counterparts. I would go for something like this
Lenovo is a perfectly trusted brand to buy from. Many people don't really understand what the Superfish issue was and was overly blown up by the media. Lenovo is a very good manufactuer to buy from, however for gaming laptops other vendors deliver better performance for the money
Try this one out:
https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Aspire-Gaming-GeForce-VX5-591G-75RM/dp/B01N12YZ7B/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8
It has 1050Ti, which is about 20% better than 1050 according to some benchmark websites.
I would say it's not the most bang for the buck you can get. Now there's something to be said about aesthetics so maybe that'll sway you one way or another, but you can get the same specs for $999
https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Aspire-Gaming-GeForce-VX5-591G-75RM/dp/B01N12YZ7B/ref=as_li_ss_tl?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_p=41fd713f-6bfe-4299-a021-d2b94872bb19&pf_rd_s=slot-3&pf_rd_t=701&pf_rd_i=gb_main&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=2CTZ303ZM51TY84DMHYS&linkCode=ll1&tag=3918-20&linkId=98de121d32bd085ad07fd581e5fe8712
or, in my opinion, better specs (6 gb gtx 1060) for $1199
https://www.amazon.com/Eluktronics-P650RP6-Premium-Gaming-Laptop/dp/B01LYOTO9B/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&qid=1488123129&sr=8-3&keywords=Eluktronics+laptop+gtx+1060&linkCode=ll1&tag=technoreco-20&linkId=b3aae31e36c7aafdfaaf19c8aebc3133

You're going to wanna go ahead and get this
if you want in your budget you can get a step lower for $50 a 1050 Ti mGPU instead of a GFX 1060
https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Aspire-Gaming-GeForce-VX5-591G-75RM/dp/B01N12YZ7B/ref=sr_1_2?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1498198291&sr=1-2&keywords=acer+gaming+laptop
If you want a laptop here are 2 that should work. Laptop 1 Laptop 2
Thank you for the reply! I just got a call back from some family and my price range has jumped an additional $200! What do you think about this or this?
This one has the same specs, except it has a GTX 1050Ti 4GB and it's the same price, plus it's a more well known brand (Acer). https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N12YZ7B/
Nothing against Eluktronics, they use Clevo platforms to build their laptops, and I've heard nothing but great things about Clevo.
If you want to go up $50, you could get this one with a 6GB GTX 1060. This upgrade is a great way to spend $50. If you plan to game on it long term, you'll kick yourself later if you don't get this one considering the small price difference. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06Y4GZS9C/
I know you're looking for a 13", but I might recommend going for one of these:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N12YZ7B
http://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/productdetails/inspiron-15-7567-laptop/fncwf514s
Good power for the price, comfortable lap size (I'm using the dell right now), and you can solidly play most games at mid-high settings without roasting your legs.
Get the Acer Aspire VX 15 from Amazon - https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Aspire-Gaming-GeForce-VX5-591G-75RM/dp/B01N12YZ7B/
It has latest 7th gen Intel i7 CPU, 16 gigs of RAM, powerful Nvidia graphics and fast SSD storage.
These are the best specs you can get for the price.
I just recently bought a $1000 Acer Aspire on Amazon that handles WoW surprisingly well, even on max graphics settings. Coming from a MacBook, I didn't even think that was possible on a laptop.
The downside? The touchpad. Trying to play WoW on any touchpad is bad, but the MacBook spoiled me. The one on the Acer is absolutely unusable for right clicking / turning. It's to the point where I might send it back. If you can always play with a mouse, this might not be a problem.
Acer Aspire VX 15 Gaming Laptop, 7th Gen Intel Core i7, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti, 15.6 Full HD, 16GB DDR4, 256GB SSD, VX5-591G-75RM https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N12YZ7B/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apip_xIEgy9qLe8MMf
I would recommend this guy https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Aspire-Gaming-GeForce-VX5-591G-75RM/dp/B01N12YZ7B/ref=sr_1_2?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1494999531&sr=1-2&keywords=acer+gaming+laptop It has the same specs as the ASUS minus an RGB keyboard and a 1TB HDD, but costs $160 less and you can easily add a 2.5in drive for mass storage. Also I would not recommend the Lenovo because the Acer laptop has a much better CPU and double the RAM for only $80 more.
I really like that one! Do you think there is much of a difference between that one and this one?
https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Aspire-Gaming-GeForce-VX5-591G-75RM/dp/B01N12YZ7B/
Thanks again for replying so quickly! Really appreciate it!
I'd suggest the Acer VX15 w/ a GTX1050Ti.. but that's just me. Sorry it's not a 17-inch, but this a lot of bang for the buck.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N12YZ7B
The laptops you've mentioned are good enough but their battery life is very poor. I recommend the Acer VX 15 which is a powerful gaming laptop with 6 to 8 hours of battery life! It also has a Nvidia GTX 1050Ti which is slightly more powerful than the regular 1050.
Nice find but its a little heavier than I would like.
Is the VX Nitro available to buy right now or is it a coming soon thing?
A quick search found Acer Aspire VX but not Nitro.
MSI I was looking at: https://www.amazon.com/MSI-GL62M-7RD-056-Performance-i7-7700HQ/dp/B01N6L9R75/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8

> Not too relevant, at this price and performance bracket I imagine things don't get too heavy or thick anyways. The thin+light/notebook form-factor is pretty nice and there are some that seem to accommodate these specs.

> If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
> I want to aim for 60+ FPS 1080p at High-Ultra settings. G-Sync would be nice but not a must-have for sake of budget. The screen doesn't need to have a high refresh rate.

> He's going to be using it for school eventually so the keyboard needs to be decent enough to type on a lot with no significant irregularities. Also a optical drive would be great since he loves to collect CDs, but we're willing to sacrifice this for improvement in other areas (like graphics and battery life) and can get an external optical drive.
>
> * Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
