Well, you have several options and I think it's important to know whether you get to spend up to 300 on the product, or less and keep the difference.

If you want an Android Device, the new Nexus 7 falls right in your price range. I had the original, and it was pretty good. You get a 1080p screen and Google's latest OS versions because its a Nexus. Google app integration is also fantastic. It's a productive and light device with a lot of media consumption options.

If you want a Windows Tablet, the [Dell Venue 8 Pro] (http://www.amazon.com/Dell-Venue-Pro-Tablet-Windows/dp/B00FEE7B1I/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1394742272&sr=8-2&keywords=dell+venue+8+pro) is generally regarded as the best Windows 8 inch tablet. The overall experience might not be as good as the Nexus because you're porting over a full OS to an 8 inch screen, but the potential is greater because you can run normal windows programs on it.

Another option you might want to consider is a Chromebook, which has deep google integration (It is their Chrome OS after all!). The Acer 720p has a touchscreen and good reviews, you also get a keyboard and great battery life! The downside is it's not going to use android apps and you'll have to rethink what you believe a computer should do.

Ultimately it's about what you want to do with it, I think for your needs any of the three above will work, though I suppose the best for you might be the Nexus 7.

I think the [C720 touch] ( http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00GSEOV7U?pc_redir=1397946145&robot_redir=1 ) is the best you're gonna get.

I have a v5 572g 6679 and have no issues. 60 odd reviews on amazon and a 4+ average agrees with me.

Same can be said for s7, v5 and v7 line models- either hundreds of reviews on amazon and newegg are wrong or maybe, just maybe newer Acer laptops are increasing in quality, and bad experiences in the past arent necessarily indicative.

The only reason I'm being anal about this is because I think Acer, along with dell and HP and many other brands that traditionally got bad rap still have a few good models, and its unfair to simply characterize all of them
as 'shit' and ignore some pretty slick deals which could help someone's wallet out a lot. Plus the people who are asking these questions may have little exposure to our world of technology, if we give a biased opinion its what they'll keep for a very long time.

Here's a few examples of well rated laptops from Acer, most prominently the s7 and chrome book (on mobile so I can't make fancy links)

Of course many more models are poor as well, but that goes with any manufacturer, and honestly I'm seeing less of that from Acer.

Doing the research for individual models is a lot more effective, and what this sub should be for. Anyone can look at one brand only and find what works, the hard part, and what were here for, is sorting through all the models and brands and suggesting what we think is the best model available to them.

Hopefully I wasn't offensive or mean, sorry if I was.

The Acer C720p is a Chromebook touchscreen that is really simple to use. It can basically browse the Internet, and if that's all your folks need to do, then it's perfect at $300. It has a Haswell 2955U processor, 2GB ram, 32GB SSD, 11.6" 1366x768 touchscreen.

This laptop can't be used without the Internet, so you can't use anything like Microsoft Office. Hope this helps!

Have you considered a higher end Chromebook? They are NOT full fledged computers but for basic word docs on Office365 or Google Drive they are just fine and there is less to go wrong. Just a thought.

Think about the 4gb version of this - http://smile.amazon.com/Acer-C720P-2666-Chromebook-11-6-Inch-Touchscreen/dp/B00GSEOV7U
