Mobile parts don't have an IHS so what the fuck are you even on about.
As for the throttling I have this laptop https://www.amazon.com/Acer-i5-8250U-NVIDIA-GeForce-SF314-52G-55WQ/dp/B0746P25QX at home unless you arer running on battery the Kabby Lake R CPUs clocks to well over 3ghz on all core Turbo and stays there for a long while.
The only time I've seen it even downclock to below 3.0ghz is when running Prime95 in with AVX2 which does pretty much pushes it against it's 15W thermal limit.

I understand, laptop shopping can be ridiculous difficult if you don't understand components. That's alright, that's what we're here for!

I'd recommend the Acer Swift 3, its a bit below budget but should be able to get the job done. It has:

  • i5-8250U 4-core processor

  • 8 GB of RAM

  • 256 GB SSD storage

  • 1080p 14" display

  • MX150 2 GB graphics card

  • Weight of 3.8lbs and battery life up to 10 hours

The laptop runs Windows 10 Home. I'm not sure if you'll necessarily need 16 GB of RAM, and if so that would be kind of hard to achieve in your range. But the components in this laptop should be fine for creating a Linux-based OS.

If you are okay with something a bit heavier, the Dell G5 which is a tad bit over budget will surpass your target for specifications.

The Acer Swift 3 with an i5-8250U and MX150 has popped up on Amazon, purportedly shipping in 1-2 months, so I'd guess during the month of September we'll be seeing more laptops available.

u/elvinelmo · 5 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

In your budget the Acer Aspire E15 is your best bet. It has a quad core CPU and a mx150 graphics card that will run games will. 13" is out of the question for your budget. The closet thing would be the Swift 3

u/techstar2000 · 4 pointsr/LaptopDeals

Could you go over the $700 budget? This ASUS ZenBook 13 would be a very nice pick that matches what you would want.

In terms of running games , this Acer Swift 3 of which I am currently an owner, would do a great job - thanks to its dedicated graphics card that the Zenbook doesnt have.

The Zenbook has a slightly better display.

The Acer Swift 3, 8th Gen Intel Core i5-8250U, NVIDIA GeForce MX150, 14" Full HD, 8GB LPDDR3, 256GB SSD, SF314-52G-55WQ

u/LonerIM2 · 3 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

> I'll be doing a fair bit of larger data analysis and some R coding

In that case I think you could use a quad core CPU so I would recommend this Acer Swift 3 because it comes with everything you need , 8th gen i5 dual core CPU which is one of the best in the market and great for your usage, 8 GB of ram for smooth multitasking, Good SSD storage of 256 GB for faster boot up and loading, Full HD IPS screen which is a must have for this price range, high build quality, long battery life, and it is within your budget.

u/BestBeating · 3 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

Actually , the first version GPD Win was only $300 , it came with Quad Core Z8700 @ 2.0GHz + 4GB of Ram

I don't understand how could they charge double for the 2nd version , ulv i3 isn't the best CPU in the world . $400 for a low performance i3 + extra 4GB of Ram ??? Nah ! I pass

For $700 , you could buy a gaming ultrabook

Here ya go. There also is the Acer E15 for $600 with the MX150, but it’s 5.3 lbs

u/Joe10112 · 3 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

I am looking to grab a 14" Laptop this Black Friday. No 15.6", feels too bulky for my friend.

Touchscreen and Rotation optional. SSD strongly preferred. Budget ~$600-800, lower is better though.

Should be able to play some small games (i.e. Overwatch) at good frame rates (60+ FPS) on Med-High, or maybe even some bigger games ("old" AAA games) at 45+ FPS, granted though it might be lower settings/resolution.

Given these specifications and your list, I am looking at the Acer Swift 3. It comes with a MX150 dedicated, which apparently is not too bad. My personal laptop (a few years old) has an 860m, and if the MX150 performs roughly the same as an 860m (from quick Google searches, that seems to be the case), then it should be fine (as in, hopefully moving forward for the next 3-4 years it will continue to be okay...) Also comes with 256 GB SSD, which is great as well.

I'm just wondering if, given those specifications, you have any other potential laptops that I should be looking at.

Thanks for putting together this list though! Very helpful.

u/LapNerd · 3 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

I would recommend Acer Swift 3 as it comes with: -

CPU: i5-8250U

GPU: GeForce MX150

RAM: 8

Display: FHD 14 IPS screen

Storage: 256 GB SSD,- HDD

Long battery life

It is a great choice because of its great heat management system and high build quality, along with its specifications makes it the best option for your usage and it is within your budget.

u/trainedtech88 · 2 pointsr/LaptopDeals

A very good option for a light and dependable laptop is this decent Acer Swift 3 it comes with a:

  • 8th Generation Intel Core i5-8250U Processor (Up to 3.4GHz)
  • NVIDIA GeForce MX150 with 2 GB of dedicated GDDR5 VRAM. Adapter - 65 Watt
  • 14" Full HD (1920 x 1080) widescreen IPS display
  • 8GB LPDDR3 Memory & 256GB SSD
  • Up to 10-hours of battery life
  • windows 10
u/TheDavie_ · 2 pointsr/LaptopDeals

I would get the acer swift 3 or the ux331un, it is your choice whether to add those 200$ for the 2 in 1.

Also, I don't know if you must have the dGPU(mx150), it is not too strong, so maybe consider the ux430ua too, versus the acer swift 3 above, it is better by having 16gigs of ram(x2) and i7 8550u(instead of i5 8250u), however, it doesn't have a dGPU\>

u/sniffyclyro420 · 2 pointsr/laptops

I know Acer and HP have released a few variants in the US so far. As for other regions I'm not sure yet, as I want an updated HP Envy 13 to be released in the UK.

u/cesarmac · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

So I was right about the Lenovo, it uses the 940MX while the XPS has no form of discrete GPU. From the get go the Lenovo is the only option of the two for light gaming, and I mean light gaming. I call the 940MX the 720p chip as most it games will play on it at 30-40FPS but the settings have to be set to low and 720p. Sometimes you can bump it up to medium but it depends on the game. When I say games I mean titles released around 2015 til now, really old games will play fine on it but really old games might not be highly optimized.

The XPS 13 is probably the one that will give you the best battery life, its thin and uses only the built in HD graphics on the i5. These build in graphics will run really old games just fine and some modern light weight titles like DOTA pretty well but don't expect any kind of AAA title to run smoothly.

If you want something with a little more power but remain in the 14" range then consider the Acer Swift 3. It uses the successor to the 940MX chip, the MX150 which has about a 20-30% bump in performance. It can play most modern titles at 1080p and low to medium settings at 30 FPS or more, especially if they are optimized well. For example, ive seen benchmarks of it playing overwatch on medium to high settings at 1080p and hitting over 55FPS on average. The 940MX gives you those same FPS at 720p medium. It also has the latest i5 low voltage quad-core processor. It wont give you the same performance as the high end quad cores but it will still give you quite an increase in multitasking capabilities while saving on battery life. Price is $800.

https://www.amazon.com/Acer-i5-8250U-NVIDIA-GeForce-SF314-52G-55WQ/dp/B0746P25QX/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_4?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1505430886&sr=1-4-fkmr0&keywords=acer+swift+3+i5-8250

Obviously the sleek and build might not be as nice as Dell and Lenovo but still decent with an all aluminum chassis, 1080p display, and light weight.

u/Orangematz · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

If you're looking for something lightweight, how about this?

u/starchaserro · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

Hi, these are the best models I found based on your requirements with a slightly bigger budget:noteb search result

You can see and change the search parameters using the "Refine results" button in the upper-left part of the search results page. You can also click on the laptops for more information.

I would recommend the: Asus ZenBook UX330UA (2017)(US). With 90%sRGB color space for Photoshop and other Adobe products.

If you work more with IDEs i recommend the : Acer Swift 3 SF314-52G (2018). With a quad-core CPU for higher performances and VMs.

You can buy and customize the Asus HERE.

You can buy the Acer HERE.

u/Dan6erbond · 2 pointsr/laptops

I would take a look at something with a dGPU in case the edits get a little intense meaning that I can recommend the Acer Swift 3 and Asus Vivobook S, both with the MX150 and an i5 to get the job done in a slim (sexy) package and some decent specs.

u/urmomsaplaya13 · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

acer!

There's this one on neweggs website. Is it the same as the one on amazon?(https://www.amazon.com/Acer-i5-8250U-NVIDIA-GeForce-SF314-52G-55WQ/dp/B0746P25QX?ref_=Oct_DLandingS_PC_c488f5c3_NA&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER)
The one on amazon says Turbo Boost Technology but the one on newegg doesn't. Does that actually mean anything?

u/omega44xt · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

At that budget, there are rarely any laptops with Thunderbolt 3 that too with 4 lanes of PCIe. You might older XPS 13 under $1000 but that has 2 lanes of PCIe, thus affecting performance. 2 in 1 & gaming doesn't go hand in hand, even in higher segment.

You will get ultrabooks like this under $1000 with MX150, which can barely run all runs at 720p low at 30fps:

https://www.amazon.com/Acer-i5-8250U-NVIDIA-GeForce-SF314-52G-55WQ/dp/B0746P25QX/ref=sr_1_7?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1550460238&sr=1-7&keywords=mx150

Moreover, it lacks Thunderbolt 3.

Only 2 in 1 in your budget than can game, again without TB3:

https://www.amazon.com/Acer-SP515-51GN-807G-i7-8550U-GeForce-Convertible/dp/B0756TSZCT/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1550461054&sr=1-3&keywords=acer+spin+nitro+5

This MSI GF63 is a good gaming laptop if you want something light to game on:

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIACVB8GV8558&Description=msi%20gf63&cm_re=msi_gf63-_-9SIACVB8GV8558-_-Product

Its GTX 1050Ti Max Q is good enough for a few more years, again no TB3.

XPS 15 is thin, light & has a Thunderbolt 3, but above your budget:

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIADYY8AG5793

XPS 13 is smaller & lighter without a dedicated GPU, has TB3 but costs similar & has a much inferior CPU to XPS 15.

My recommendations are to compromise TB3 & get MSI or increase budget & get XPS 15. XPS 15 has a great battery life.

u/aleishabb · 2 pointsr/LaptopDeals

Check out the Acer Swift 3. The price difference with the non gpu version is not great so I would get that version

· 8th Generation Intel Core i5-8250U Processor (Up to 3.4GHz)

· NVIDIA GeForce MX150 with 2 GB of dedicated GDDR5 VRAM

· 14" Full HD (1920 x 1080) widescreen IPS display

· 8GB RAM

· 256GB SSD

· Battery life 8+ hrs

· Weight 3.75

It has a solid build quality due to its aluminum chassis so it can take a few bumps on its way to work

u/Choice77777 · 2 pointsr/nvidia

Absolutely misleading article !

All the laptops on that list are 4.1 pounds on average and even 4.9 pounds and 1200 dollars to 2700 dollars !!!! , and article states mx150 or better gpu as acceptable gpu yet totally ignores the Acer Swift 3 which is 3.6 pounds with an nvidia mx150 gpu and a price of just 749 dollars !!!!! for the quite capable i5 8250u cpu with 7600 passmark points, mx150, 8gb ram and 256 gb ssd, 14 inch.

Also 15 inch laptops with numpad aren't worthy of being on any lightweight list. Only 14 inch or less.

Second attempt for suggestion! Now won't move from 600-850$.

First: Acer Swift 3. I think that model is great.

Second: Asus ZenBook UX330UA-AH55

Third (yours): Dell Inspiron 13 7000

Take in mind something, Dell Inspiron 13 7000 is touch display. That, by itself, is great. But it consumes more battery, so maybe it worries you. Any question, just DO IT!

u/The---Technician · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

You could get this Acer Swift 3 with the solid 8th gen i5 processor that will handle photo editing tasks excellently. It also has a nice 8 GB RAM and fast 256 GB SSD in addition to a tough metal case, crunchy keyboard and long battery life.

u/Tarotar94 · 2 pointsr/LaptopDeals

This ones pretty good, it's 15.'6" but it is around 3lbs. Only down side is no SSD.
https://www.amazon.com/VivoBook-NanoEdge-WideView-Display-X510UQ-NH71/dp/B0762PPGJJ/ref=sr_1_3?s=black-friday&psr=EY17&ie=UTF8&qid=1511401369&sr=1-3&keywords=laptops

But you can always wait for black friday and cyber monday for more sales. If you're dead set on the under 15" check for deals on Acer Swifts series, they are usually small but have a decent punch to them.

u/Kart0410 · 2 pointsr/laptops

There is Acer Swift 3 and a Asus Zenbook with similar specs but its price is like $999 plus the Acer Swift just looks and feels more premium and she can get an external HDD or even SSD for photo and video editing plus the MX 150 gpu can handle almost every games at medium with good frames.

u/glymao · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

Maybe this as it has everything you need.

u/Phestman · 1 pointr/ElectricalEngineering

I just bought an Acer Swift 3 that I’m extremely happy with. Low price, light, good battery life. It’s basically a Mac clone and best bang for your buck I could find. You can get it for around $600 if you don’t want a gpu. After buying this I compared to the specs of Macs and laughed so hard. Apple was once competitive in the ultrabook market but everyone else caught up and put their specs to shame again. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0746P25QX/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

u/Poebatfire · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

That sounds awesome, but I've had bad experience with Acer devices in the past, especially build quality. How long do you think the battery will last wear wise? My T430 as 85% battery capacity 6 years later with 800 cycles. Will this Acer see similar results? Otherwise this laptop looks very tempting. Thanks so much!

edit: These reviews are unsettling. Any thoughts?

u/FRIENDSHIP_MASTER · 1 pointr/LaptopDeals

I ended up ordering an Acer Swift 3 for $719. It seems like this is one of the best deals for a laptop with i5 8250u, mx150, 256 GB SSD, 1080p IPS, and light weight. I was hoping for a better deal, but I guess this will do.

My only concern is that reviews indicate the screen is not as bright as one might expect at this price point.

u/tek_thetech_tap · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

There's Acer Swift 3 on Amazon, with i5 8th Gen, MX150 GPU (can handle Sea of Thieves on low settings comfortably), 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD.
