Don't let the 'i5' name deceive you, the i5 from 2012 is only a dual core and much slower. If you don't need MacOS, I wouldn't go for it. Like you said already, the Acer Swift 3 is an excellent choice in your range that is brand new.

If you can push your budget a little higher, and can accept 14 inch screen, then I would recommend this Acer Swift 3

the casing made of brushed aluminum and looks very premium.

256GB of SSD and 8GB of RAM like you want.

The keyboard is a chiclet keyboard and it’s backlit like you want, typing on it feels spongy, but you get used to it quickly.

Drag and drop sometimes doesn't work as intended, but that is easily fixed with software.

Screen is glossy Full HD IPS, with very good viewing angles, the screen flickers at 200 Hz in a brightness level of 20%. if you have sensitive eyes might find this unpleasant (or you can get a headache if you are really sensitive).

The main (and maybe only) con about this laptop is how dim the screen can get, it is not usable in direct sunlight, and the coverage of colors is average (39% RGB and 61% sRGB).

Has very good heat management, and it doesn't throttle.

Speakers provide very clear sounds, and the maximum volume is pretty loud.


Battery life is very good at around 9-11 hours of usage on light to medium usage.

I think the leap to 600$ is a must because you'll get a metal chassis and an SSD.

This could be a good option for you: Acer Swift 3 SF314-54 - because it has a metal body, quad-core processor, SSD, 1 memory slot soldered and 1 not - so you can upgrade RAM, has a pretty good keyboard and ~9H battery life. I'm recommending this one over the Ideapads, Aspire ore Vivobooks because I think the Swift family is more reliable. You can find it here for 597$.

Your needs are very basic so you do not need to use all of your budget. The Acer Swift 3 SF314 would be a good laptop to get as not only is it lightweight but it has a good build quality that will be able to last you for years to come. It has an aluminum chassis which is sturdy and can take a few bumps as you travel from class to class. Performance wise you will be satisfied as its quad-core CPU and 8 GB of RAM are more than enough for multi-tasking or any school-related work you plan to do with it. Its battery is pretty good as well so you can leave your charger at home to reduce the weight as well

This Acer Swift 3 is a nice option for what you are looking for. it comes with the ips display that you want, an ssd and an 8gb ram. its also light weight, has a good battery life and is within budget.

Similar situation as op looking at mainly at Acer's swift 3 and debating what I need to start working on simple stuff in unity and programming in general, would this swift 3 with non upgradeable ram be better suited over this base model which has upgradeable ram.

So I've narrowed the options down to the following 6 laptops.
I'm wondering if any one of these is a clear level above the others in terms of the tollowing things :
Key board quality and Long term hardware reliability (3+ years)
Screen visibility in daylight

Lowest priority given to gaming capabilities since it's been almost two years since I touched any game on a laptop and I doubt I'll get the time to play any on hers.
