I would recommend either this Acer Swift 5 because it comes with everything you need , 7th gen i5 dual core CPU which is one of the best in the market and great for your usage, comes with HD 620 iGPU which is again one of the best availble and should be enough for your gaming, 8 GB of ram for smooth multitasking, Good SSD storage of 256 GB for faster boot up and loading, Full HD IPS screen which is a must have for this price range, high build quality, lightweight at 2.9 lbs, with long battery life, and it is within your budget.
I would also suggest this Acer Spin 5 because it comes with everything you need ,7th gen i5 dual core CPU which is one of the best in the market and great for your usage, 8 GB of ram for smooth multitasking, Good SSD storage of 256 GB for faster boot up and loading, Full HD IPS screen which is a must have for this price range, high build quality, 2 in 1 features, long battery life, HD 620 iGPU, and it is within your budget.
There are several laptops that fits your criteria I would recommend that you check out my reddit post about best laptops to buy for college and gaming
As a student also in a similar position to him, I think you should try to figure out what he thinks he is majoring in. If he's going into engineering I'd strongly recommend a windows laptop. But if he's going into business or computer science, a macbook pro may be optimal if he's willing to pay for it.
You are paying a bit for the brandname when buying a macbook pro, but they really are excellent machines as long as you're not interested in heavy gaming (they can still handle light gaming fine). They have pretty good specs, best-in-class build quality, touchpad, and display, and have great customer service.
Other options to look into are the Dell XPS 13, the new Microsoft Surface Laptop (the $1300 model). If he's interested in budgeting maybe the HP Envy 13 or the Acer Swift 5
For more suggestions or a better idea of what to look for, maybe look through my comprehensive list here.
The best 2 in 1 laptop in budget would be the Acer Swift 5
The aluminum body of this laptop makes it durable enough to handle the stress of travel and being light weight makes it easy on you. It has 1 - USB Type-C Port USB 3.1 Gen 1 (up to 5 Gbps)
2 - USB 3.0 ports (one with power-off charging). It can manage light gaming but the Acer R15 with a dedicated GPU would have better specs
How about this?
Thank you for the list! I think there are, as of now, 4 options that I'm considering, and I need to go through reviews, etc. to figure out which one to go with. They all seem to have differing pros/cons (which include price differences), making it very hard to choose. If you have any specific recommendations/thoughts, that would be very helpful!
These are listed roughly in order of preference (as of now):
That's a nice one. I actually just stumbled upon this:
https://www.amazon.com/Acer-i5-7200U-LPDDR3-Windows-SF514-51-54T8/dp/B01LZY72TU
It seems to be amazing and I like the 14" screen size plus the battery life a lot. Any thoughts on this laptop?
I really think she would love this Acer Swift 5 even though it doesnt have the optical drive. it very lightweight which is a plus at her age, very nice keyboard, bright and sharp display screen and its built is pretty good for the price. it comes with a:
backlit Display
Has anyone played Factorio on their laptops? I was thinking about getting the Acer Swift 5, but I'm not sure if it will be able to run Factorio well.
I'm not sure if a dedicated graphics card would be necessary or if the integrated graphics would be able to run it.
