Woot! I can confirm another alternative! I used the tabmate on PC and really loved it. I have since moved to iOS, which as we know, means no tabmate. I purchased an 8bit controller and followed the guide. It worked ok. It just had connection problems, and it didn’t feel great in my hand. On a whim, I decided to give another controller a try. I purchased an iOS vr controller, and I’m happy/surprised to say it works great! The setup is basically the same the 8bit controller guide as far as how to set up the hot keys. But, it feels way better in your hand (it’s made specifically to be used in one hand), and it connects with zero problems. I’m super happy with it. I got it on Amazon. Just a plug for this controller which I bought over what OP used.
at the time of this posting, costs $3 more, but has a built in rechargable battery and is a lot more comfortable to hold. Not sure on button count or if OPs version also let's you switch between 4 different modes.

Just got this in the mail today. Was a little confusing to set up at first but it works great. Super small so I can use it anywhere. Works with my MacBook after installing a key mapping program (I used Enjoyable, but there are plenty of other programs).
I actually have an old nostromo but am looking for something better. I found one item, it looked kind of interesting, but I'm not completely sold on it:

Sorry to necro this, but it's an area I spent a lot of time researching. The advanced features of tabmate seem to only work in csp for now, which might be a deal breaker for some.
In regards to using gamepads, I currently do this with the device below. It's a cheap BT Chinese gampad. The unique aspect of it is that its designed to be held in one hand and has a whole for your finger, which makes it very comfortable in my opinion.
Many have already mentioned joytokey. I humbly recommend antimicro. It's free and open source, and has some advanced features like the ability to shift between levels to provide many more key options.
