I've found single bulbs to be less versatile than LED "tubes" or panels, though I mainly use them for seed starting. I got a bunch of lights like https://www.ebay.com/itm/2x-Plant-LED-Grow-Light-90cm-T8-Kit-Full-Spectrum-Indoor-Veg-Flower-Tubes-Lamp/264398968207, with tubes the length of the shelves that I start seeds on, and wired up a power supply to them. I also have one of https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B076B1W99T that's worked just fine for several years in a row now. A plain old mechanical timer like you'd use for any other lamp has worked fine for setting day lengths, except that during power outages mine doesn't keep counting time, so it can occasionally get skewed a bit if the power goes out for a couple hours then returns.

im working with a real hodgepodge of stuff bought over the years, but i like these because they are easy to instal and configure, (and cheap!) but they need to be relatively close to the plants, i have them over my mini plants and they are at a hight of maybe 8-9". im also not wild about the color of light the put out and am looking to update to some white leds

Just get an outlet timer like this one

Unfortunately, LEDs with high enough lumen output are expensive.. It's just a fact of life. I would go with T5s to start. But, if you have a pretty small footprint, you could use this this LED light,. I've never used it, but I believe people are relatively happy with it.

Sorry, I don’t know much about the strips and shelves - though I do use some on my reef tank macroalgae reactor (clear tube with led strips wrapped around) seems to work well and puts up with occasional salt water with out electrocuting me or fish. I don’t know how to fix them onto shelves tho.

I use these one on my plant shelves and added one of these just so it wasn’t bright red. You can see my shelves in my last post. They’re super low profile. But my shelves are wire mesh which allowed me to easily tie them to the underside.

When you mix red, blue, and green light, you end up with white. Plants absorb red and blue, and reject/reflect green (hence there color). Blue light is necessary for chlorophyll production, red light is used in photosynthesis. Plants only utilize certain colors, and white light would have a lot of extra colors in it that will go to waste, and less of what the plants actually want. Check out this Wikipedia photo (also shows why fluorescent lights suck). This is the grow light that I personally have used with great results (NOT an affiliate link), it provides plenty of light output and I have it around 12-14" above my plants, no issues with legginess. There's many styles of LED Grow lights available, such as these tubes at the home depot. If you hunt around on Amazon, 4.5 star rated grow lights can be found for under $10, I can't imagine high output tubes being cheaper than that. Lumen ratings usually aren't provided with colored lights. I've been able to fit a 10x20 tray under my grow light without issue, my grow light was 20w. I understand your budged constraints, in lieu of shelves and aquariums i use a cheapo plastic ice chest.

Okay thanks. I was going to wrap the jars in foil with the reflective side out and place fish stones on top of the rock wool to prevent light from touching the roots. I think I'll look into UV light growing with soil and pot set ups. I can assume the plants you did not list work with the mason jar set up?

Also, this worked well in some guys video and are the perfect size for the shelf I am using.

It's just a generic 75 gal, I was using a Nicrew led with grow light led panels (https://www.amazon.com) but all it did was grow algae, 8 hours per day.

I think possibly the SBreef, though would it be better to get 1-2 sets of basic plant models, of the larger models.

I use a mix of aquasoil and fert tabs, and have a 20 lb CO2 canister / victor CO2 regulator.
