Once you taste the forbidden fruit, it's impossible to forget the taste.

I'd say the biggest change is going from 60/75 hz to 120/144hz. But the Jump from 120hz to 144hz was minor for me. Didn't notice that big of a difference. The jump to 240 was more noticable, but still not as big as the 60 to 144hz.

The good thing is that 144hz monitors have been increasingly dropping in price and on sale. You have 1080p 144hz monitors in the low $200's and 1440p starting around $300 but going all the way up to as much as you want to pay.

34 inch ultrawide, IPS, gsync, 120 HZ refresh rate overclocked. I have it, it's a beast. The box it came in is HUGE.

u/RedZaturn · 49 pointsr/FortNiteBR

> Who at Epic thought this would be acceptable is beyond me

Its fairly simple... The goal of competitive play is to make the playing field as level as possible.

They probably didn't want people to have a massive competitive advantage over others because they have the financial ability to drop $850 on a monitor.

And the aspect ratio lock only applies to competitive, further proving my point that this change is to level the playing field. If they did it with the sole goal of pissing you off, they would have put the aspect ratio lock in normal playlists as well.

u/tkim91321 · 33 pointsr/buildapcsales

Have this. Phenomenal monitor. However, I would recommend Alienware AW3418DW for $30 more. The Alienware one has an updated panel and Dell's warranty is the shit.

Just be prepared to play the panel lottery. I had to go through 3 before I found one where the bleed/glow was at acceptable levels.

Also note: FREE delivery: Dec 17 - Jan 16 as of this comment posting.

u/Crashboy96 · 21 pointsr/buildapcsales

The AW3418DW has been selling for $650 new lately and is currently available from Beach Camera on Amazon for $670 new.

Gotta say $75-$100 off — 11-14% — for a refurbished unit with a shorter warranty does not seem worth it.

u/spicedpumpkins · 11 pointsr/buildapcsales

OK let's use your example. Hang on, this is going to be a long read.

THE BUILD THINKING PROCESS: Have realistic goals for your budget and build the highest resolution to fps ratio you can get for the money with a target of 60fps minimum for at least 75% of the time.

When I make a build I almost always include an adaptive sync monitor (freesync/gsync) in the budget because of exactly your scenario.

When enabled, the average person CANNOT distinguish in the middle of a fight between 130 and 144fps. Now you're going to get that super APM Korean here who will claim they can but on average most people cannot consistently distinguish above even 120hz....Linus tech tips and a bunch of other respected tech youtubers have fleshed this out ad nauseum.

With this in mind, adaptive sync alone can often mitigate loss of frames vs what you actually notice when playing, thus slightly future proofing your needs to upgrade immediately on a new hardware cycle.

When a friend, family member or colleague asks for a pc build the following questions come into play:

  1. What specific games or genre of games will you be playing?

  2. I explain to them what adaptive sync is and usually Show them this video. I also tell them I try to target them at 60fps on average as most people CAN notice below 60fps. At my house I have 1080p 75hz, 1440p 144hz/165hz and Ultrawide 3440x1440p at 120hz set ups for me and my own family and explaining to them these are $1100+, $2000+ and $3500+ builds and let them play with them. I also have built budget builds sub $600 but explain that there won't be an adaptive sync monitor in the build.

  3. Then I ask what's their top dollar budget before tax using roughly $1k, $2k and $3.5k increments and tell them what resolution and refresh rate they are buying into so they have upfront expectations of the best case scenario for frames. I also clearly explain that there will be variable fps depending on what is going on in the game and how graphics intensive it is.

In addition, I also explain the difference in most games between med, high and ultra settings and what things you could turn off to increase frames and not notice much difference in overall gameplay (e.g. Turn off Hairworks, Reduce shadows appropriately, at higher resolutions there is little need for higher AA, etc.)

NOW LET'S TALK ABOUT UPGRADE PATH:

According to most recent Steam Hardware Survey the vast majority of gamers are rocking 1050ti/1060 level of cards. These are 1080p medium to high settings cards that can deliver 30-120+ fps depending on game.

I tell them there is ZERO need to upgrade even when new hardware comes out IF you are happy with the current FPS of games you are playing. Seriously. Who gives a shit if all they want to play are esports titles like DOTA, LOL, Overwatch, Rocket League, Fortnite, etc and are getting 60fps+ and frankly typically 100+fps in those titles with those GPUs. Why bother upgrading a 3-5 year old system at all if your gaming experience is good and you are pleased with the current results.

When to upgrade then? When a game comes out that you know you want to play outperforms your current setup and you are willing to pay to meet the performance bar. Depending on title, this MOST of the time doesn't even require anything more than a GPU upgrade if they already have a solid CPU and RAM config.

I'll give you the perfect example. I had a colleague who was playing mostly esports titles with a 1060ti rocking a i5 4690k with 16GBs of DDR3 but now wanted to start playing more graphic intensive games such as Witcher 3 and Monster Hunter World PC at 60fps+ and he thought he had to buy an entire new computer and came to me. He currently has a 144hz 1080p IPS gsync monitor. I said no way man. Don't throw out the baby with the bath water. His rig specific for gaming is still quite playable in most titles. I asked him if he was happy to keep his current playing resolution (1080p gsync) or if MIGHT consider going 1440p in the near future. He said he was sure he wanted to stay at 1080p for now. I suggested he just upgrade to a 2060 for $350ish bucks. He ended up getting a 2060 for a little over $350 and is extremely happy with this upgrade path. Here he thought he was going to have to spend $1500+ and was perfectly happy with the $350 upgrade.

    THE BUILD ITSELF:

I take my sweet ass time and tell them it will take at least a week before I'm done building when all parts arrive (even though I can knock out most builds in a few hours) so I have no rush on myself as I build PC's for a relaxing hobby and not a job. Some people build legos or models. I like building PC's.

Long read. I hope it helps save you some money and make a more informed PC building decision.

In the market for the AW AW3418DW. The current deal of the day has them at $720 lowest amazon price recorded (according to camelcamelcamel). This a good enough price to pick up if I'm looking to lock something down sooner rather than later?

Can anyone advise if this is a good buy with the giant discount right now? I’ve been hunting for a 34” ultrawide 1440p 21:9 144hz gsync. The problem with this one is that it’s only “120hz overclocked”, and I’m curious how big the difference between that and a full 144hz one would be? I’m planning to upgrade to a 2080 super next week when they release. The price here just seems fantastic for almost exactly what I’m after. Any thoughts?

I agree with the ultra wide option. Samsung LC49HG90DMNXZA CHG90 Series Curved 49-Inch Gaming Monitor https://www.amazon.com/dp/B072C7TNC5/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_ieG7BbRBGZSTB but it's only 1080. Like you said, it's your opinion.

Ultrawide is the Dell Alienware AW3418DW.

Microcenter also has these for $799 along with the Acer X34P.

u/Zutrax · 3 pointsr/battlestations

The vertical monitor is a Dell Gaming S2716DGR. It's a 27" 1440p TN panel monitor with G-Sync. It's a fantastic little monitor, but a lot of people do have issue with color banding on it, especially if you don't tweak the settings on it.

The curved ultrawide is an Alienware 1900R. For me it was a tossup between that and the Asus Predator ultrawide of the same style. I ended up chosing the Alienware due to less complaints over backlight bleed and the fact that it overclocks to 120hz. So far it's been a beautiful monitor and I've had zero issues with it.

That's a great monitor, It's a 1440p (not 4k!) 144hz IPS and gsync.

4k is bad for gaming. It's dumb for gaming. Some people like it for gaming and that's OK, some people also like surstromming, people can have opinions. MOST people think 4k is bad for gaming.

Your other option would be this: https://www.amazon.com/Dell-Alienware-Monitor-Resolution-Overclocked/dp/B0777RY75V
It's ultrawide 3440x1440 120hz Gsync, it's AMAZING for games like skyrim, and racing sims and flight sims and stuff.

Your OTHER option is a 4k OLED HDR TV for like $2000, it's so worth it on the (very few) HDR enabled games like FFXV, your eyes will pop.

I currently own this monitor going on 6 months now. The image, color and viewing angles are amazing IF you have a Radeon (Freesync) card. I Had to sell my 1070Ti because they were ridiculously incompatible. Ghosting, stutters, tearing galore, all resolved when I got my Vega 64. So buy this monitor if you are team Red, otherwise I can't recommend it.

If you're in the market for an ultrawide + graphics card combo, there this monitor paired with this card might be the best deal right now

I think the best monitor for the specs that you want is the LG 34GK950F-B. It's an absolutely killer monitor. 144hz, black design, borderless, IPS, and 34". The only thing is that it is Freesync2 instead of GSync, but there is not a lot of reasons to get Gsync monitors given Nvidia supports Freesync now. Also, it's a little over your budget.

If you absolutely want to stay in your budget, then the Dell ALienware 1900R is within your budget but only at 120Hz. Also the, Acer Z35 but it's a VA panel and not as minimalistic.

Personally, I'd go with the LG if you can spare an extra $100

I'm in the market for an UltraWide in the UK as well, and the prices here are just stupid compared to the US...The one I really want is Alienware AW3418DW but I'm waiting for a good sale on it as the "refreshed" version AW3420DW just dropped in the US and supposedly will be available in Europe 18.10.2019.At the moment AW3418DW in the US is $839 = £674But in the UK the same model costs £999 = $ 1242Amazon US Amazon UKThat is basically double the price for the same item, I know that there are differences with taxes etc but this is just ridiculous. And this trend can be spotted with different brands like ACER and ASUS.I'm holding off until I spot a great deal on either the AW3418DW or Predator X34P, and would recommend you to do the same. Hope this helps

Edit: Btw If you are looking at the Z35P, not so long ago (2-3 weeks) it was discounted on Box for ~£550, so everything you pay above that is overpaying.

Likely going with the 2080ti over the 2080 because i'll be playing pretty much nothing but 3440x1440 for a long while which can be a fair bit more demanding than normal 1440p, so id rather pony up the extra money and have better performance for a fair while longer than I would with the 2080.

https://www.amazon.com/Dell-Alienware-Monitor-Resolution-Overclocked/dp/B0777RY75V

Ignore that its alienware and ive heard nothing but fantastic things about this monitor. Im 100% going for a 3440x1440p monitor, and the selection on those is a bit more limited so I decided to research for a while and this is the one that came out as my favorite For 3440 100hz, Its pretty tough to find anything below 600 or 700. Im spending a fair bit on hardware and feel like itd be pointless to get anything below 100hz. Im finally in a situation where I can afford to build a PC and have a bit of money to enjoy life with, which is a position ive never been.

All in all id rather pony up some extra $$$ for the premium stuff because I finally can. The monitor is expensive as all hell but its huge, 3440x1440p, and its a IPS with a low response time. Id rather it look pretty AND feel great to play, rather than sticking to 1080p and playing on a much smaller monitor that wont look nearly as nice. Dont get me wrong 4k is nice and all but fuck paying a ton of money to play something at 60fps at best. UW 1440p just feels like the sweet spot with best of both worlds.

So I just picked up an this monitor https://www.amazon.com/Dell-Alienware-Monitor-Resolution-Overclocked/dp/B0777RY75V

Maybe bad idea. I don’t know. But I haven’t built my pc yet. I do have a laptop though that I am using with it. However, when I hook it up both screens become laggy. Some people said it may be a chrome issue but I switched browsers and still same result. I’m leaning toward the idea that the difference of hz and not being synced somehow. Anyone have any experience with this? I just got my new Alienware ultrawide yesterday. :) What do you think of the samsung? The onyl reason i didnt go with it is due to its vertical being only 1080. I wanted a 1440 monitor and the Alienware also supports Gsync instead of freesync.

I bought this exact monitor back in 2018 around black friday for the same price it is listed for currently if that helps at all. I really like the monitor and have had it overclocked to 120hz since the day I bought it with no issues. Although YMMV because it is not guaranteed to be stable at 120hz.

I guess if someone has an EVEN BETTER deal later I could... return this one. Or just do dual ultrawides :p

Just bought one of these bad boys: Alienware AW3418DW

Right now I'm running a Ryzen 2600 and an old RX 480. Obviously I need to upgrade the graphics card. My question is: Since this is a G-Sync monitor am I stuck with Nvidia? I heard that some G-Sync monitors can run Freesync now, but I can't find an answer regarding this specific monitor.

Any help appreciated. Thanks!

Oh, BTW, is the Ryzen 2600 good enough for 1440p 120 hz gaming?

So I've been looking at the pieces and have come up with this list that I'm considering.

https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/QFpryX (Plus a monitor, clicked it off since I'm unsure which one I want, linked below)

There are three points where I'd like advice if you can.

  1. The Motherboard: I don't need Wifi or anything fancy, and was wondering if there were strong-but-cheaper alternatives for this setup.
  2. I still don't quite know which specific 2080 Ti I should pick (if not just the one you had previously linked, which is fine)
  3. For thre screen, I was considering ultrawide, like this for example, or this, or this. There is also the ultrawide you had linked as well, for slightly more expensive. Would those screens limit my gaming performance, or do they support high FPS as well, 144Hz?

Also wondering if I should do curved or if I should get a flat that can do 4K more easily or something

    Thanks

How does 1440p/144 hz compare to 1440p/120hz?

Been wondering if it would be worth upgrading to a 144hz or if it would even be a noticable difference.

u/terracide99 · 1 pointr/blackdesertonline

I have an Acer Predator X34, and the screen size & resolution spoiled me against playing on anything smaller. However, it is an older model, both Alienware and LG are newer with higher OC-able fps. Monoprice also have a decent one at half the price of others.

Don't need to worry about free/g-sync with these, since you won't be able to push anywhere close to these monitors limits with a 1070; my 1080ti only getting 60~90 fps

u/Jungianshadow · 1 pointr/Monitors

https://www.amazon.com/Dell-Alienware-Monitor-Resolution-Overclocked/dp/B0777RY75V This is popular, but 350 off 500 dollars (oh its euros, your probably good). The response rate is 4ms, so take that into consideration. VESA mount might not come easily for something this premium?

60 hz overclocked to 100 hz? I don't like that. Especially for close to $1000. I got my alienware for $889(https://www.amazon.com/Dell-Alienware-Monitor-Resolution-Overclocked/dp/B0777RY75V). Which is 120 hz(overclocked) and also g-sync.

They don't really make 4k ultrawide gsync and 100hz+ monitors. Their is one coming later this year but everyone expects it to carry a $1600 price tag. If money isn't an issue then wait for that. Other then that, I went from 2 27' 16:9 monitors to my current setup with an ultrawide. The ultrawide alone far outshines any double monitor set up for gaming. Their is no way I could go back to to standard monitors after this :P Come visit us over at /ultrawidemasterrace

The monitor I have is the Alienware ultawide. G-sync, IPS, 120hz, 1440p among other features. I can highly recommend it, it has been game changing.

Because they have a deal right now on their US site for the monitor that is worse than Canada's regular price?

Take $1,349.99 USD and be generous and subtract the full $200 of the promo gift card. That's just over $1500 CAD.

Where Amazon.ca has it for $1200CAD regular with $100 off right now, and Dell's canadian website has the same with a higher regular price.

Or maybe they're trying to clear out Canadian stock and if it still doesn't sell it could see a larger BF pricedrop. Hard to tell.

u/Maximus8392 · 1 pointr/buildapc

Thank you for the response. I have my reasons for not picking a bigger monitor (like the AW3418DW, which has really good reviews). I don't want anything bigger than 25" at this moment in time.

u/Sylanthra · 1 pointr/Monitors

I like ultrawide monitors for gaming. It is a much more immersive experience for both 3rd person and first person games. For work ultrawide is also great because you can have multiple windows side by side. If money is no object, you can't go wrong with AW3418DW. That's the current king of the hill although Acer predator x35 is supposed to come out later this year.

As far as high refresh rate and g-sync, they are great features. It won't make you a better gamer, but it will make games look smoother.

Best gsync ultrawide RIGHT NOW is the Alienware 3418w

1440p, IPS, and 120hz. Most ultrawides only go to 100hz

Ive seen this go for as low as $750 new on buildapcsales subreddit

I have tried this montior instore, it is an absolute beauty.

Any other 'gaming' ultrawide is a waste of money compared to this thing

u/digitalgoodtime · 1 pointr/buildapcsales

I'm right there with you. I'm currently on the LG 34UC88. Looking to upgrade to the Alienware AW3418DW this holiday season. And you're right, ultrawide is a game changer. People ask questions like how far do you sit from the computer and they don't understand the extra periphal on screen makes a huge difference, not only for immersion but for a cinematic experience. I feel like I'm a high class establishment when I use my PC.

u/kermityfrog · 1 pointr/hardware

I bought this monitor somewhat recently and it's pretty awesome. I think the g-sync does more for gaming than the 120Hz (overclocked).

u/pneumaticYeti · 1 pointr/Monitors

G-Sync usually adds a few hundred dollars to the pricetag. The Alienware model is one of the best of the ultrawide G-Sync bunch, and it is currently on sale for as low as I've seen it on Amazon:

Dell Alienware 1900R 34.1", Curved Gaming Monitor LED-Lit, WQHD 3440 x 1440p Resolution, 4ms 120Hz Overclocked Refresh Rate, NVIDIA G-Sync, 21:9 Aspect Ratio, HDMI, Display Port, 4x USB 3.0, AW3418DW https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0777RY75V/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_cQ4.BbZSQV4EX

Edit: Just read your card though, beware that a 780 is going to have a hard time powering most modern games at that resolution and refresh rate.

u/KingNyxus · 1 pointr/ultrawidemasterrace

There’s not really such thing.

It really just depends on how high end of a monitor you want, same as buying a new TV.

Currently the Alienware on the high end is a good deal at $800

https://www.amazon.com/Dell-Alienware-Monitor-Resolution-Overclocked/dp/B0777RY75V

But new ones are coming out soon with HDR and 200hz

If you want something more basic, LG has some pretty cheap ones

If you have the Citi BanK's Double Cash credit card, does price rewind work on this with the Amazon's listing price?

u/Jofai · 1 pointr/ultrawidemasterrace

If you're seeing $899 USD on Amazon, you're likely looking at the 1080p version rather than the 1440p version ($979). The 1440p is actually $859 over at Newegg's eBay store though.

If money isn't a big issue, then imo this is the best ultrawide , best current 4K , best 1440p

u/TheMadOneOfSB · 1 pointr/buildapc

You want to drive two 4K ultrawide 120Hz monitors?...I'm going to have to rain on your parade a bit.

They don't exist. We've barely gotten to 144hz on a 16:9 4K panel, much less an ultrawide version.

And even if they did exist, there isn't a GPU on the market that could feed two of them. I own a EVGA 2080ti FTW 3 Hybrid. I can just barely get 80-90fps in games like Far Cry 5 at ultra settings. That's literally the second best GPU EVGA makes, next to the Kingpin. We're at least 2-3 GPU generations away from mainstream 4K 144hz.

1440p 120hz ultrawides exist, but they're a pretty penny for even one.

This Alienware would be my recommendation. Alienware is Dell, and Dell monitors are ususally very good:

u/krappadizzle · 1 pointr/nvidia

Sure, the Ultrawide and the 1440p I use. Both run by a single 1080ti. No issues playing any games, though I'm only playing on the Ultrawide at the moment as my 1440p is now my secondary monitor(it was my main one for quite a few years)

If you don't want to spend the extra cash for the Ultrawide, that 1440p monitor is awesome and I would suggest it to anyone. Games will run better at 2560x1440 vs. the 3440x1440 as well. But it's hard to go back from ultrawide once you've commited to it. At 1440p the 1080ti is a monster of a card and you will not have ANY issues playing just about everything maxed out.

u/ElonMesk · 1 pointr/buildapc

Are you shopping for one or multiple panels? Cause unless you are looking for an IPS ultrawide, that’s a generous budget.

Best. Fucking. Purchase. Ever.

As for the ultrawide, she runs like a champ. I use both an Alienware 34" on my desk @120hz and an Acer Predator @100hz on the rig (mostly cuz I didn't have a custom bracket to mount the Dell instead lol)

I run it from a 1080ti and a 3770k - it crushes games I throw at it no problem holding 100 fps for almost everything while I stream. So you should be fine with a 2080.

This setup was easily the most efficient from a footprint and a cost perspective. I'll add in VR in the future at some point to have some fun, but the ultrawide looks 10x better than the Vive or Rift I used and works great for 90% of my purposes. Only thing I really want to add is headtracking because lately in multiplayer RX lobbies I've had issues with the spotter not giving me good enough details on where the car is beside me.

I will say if you go ultrawide, I'd still keep the monitors on the desk if possible - really annoying to move a monitor and position it perfectly every time you race. Unless you did a static sliding rail that only went horizontal and not vertical - that might be doable but annoying in its own way. Besides, the extra monitors on the side let you have discord/steam open, play music, etc.
