There is only one field jacket and its his name is M65. Alpha industries makes a very nice replica and they fit tall folk. Get one size smaller than you wear. As an example of what they look like http://www.amazon.com/Alpha-Industries-Mens-M-65-Field/dp/B002VWK5UK/ref=pd_sim_sbs_a_3?ie=UTF8&refRID=1A5SWG0P8GJT1CGQSEZW.

EDIT: I OVERDID IT!

Anyways, among the ones I've listed, the ones I think look best are the Alpha Industries M-65 Field Coat, Orvis Heritage Field Coat, any of the L.L. Bean coats, and the Blaklader jacket.

It's now 2:30 am. Good night!

Here's a list of relatively affordable ones I found around:

It's not quite the same, but for rugged jackets, I'd look at a real M-65 field jacket, and get the button-in thinsulate liner. Mine is an actual issued item, and the quality is top notch. The fabric is extremely abrasion resistant, and they are in style now. It should last for a great many years.

You can't get issue ones outside of camo, which I'm sure you don't want (if they issue them still), but Alpha makes a very good product from my experience with other items. Here's their field jacket - ignore the main photo's goofy sleeves. They have a fold-down flap to keep the wind off your hands, and the model has this down, and the arms out to the largest setting, so it looks very goofy. Propper is another good brand, often US made.

Like a regular Carhartt or other chore coat, this also will be a bit bulkier than most fashion-conscious people will want, so I'd look at hitting a tailor after a while of wearing it. Taking out the hood will allow the collar to slim down a bit, pockets can be sewn down, etc, to streamline the look.

kind of wondering about picking one of those up myself... although more fall/spring wear ... between sweatshirt weather and down jacket weather... good thread, a few of the ones mentioned are uniform-worthy

Frugal =/= cheap.

It's a quality piece of versatile outerwear at an almost unheard of price. This is going for maybe $50 more than the oft recommended Alpha Industries and is arguably a higher quality piece.

This sub is all about getting deals on clothes, whether dirt cheap or a $700 field jacket. Deals may fall outside the budget of some users, but that doesn't mean they aren't frugal.
