Another solution is to add an arrow before hooping and wrapping up your fabric. You could do this with either a water soluble marker or by stitching a quick arrow that you take out after you've stitched enough that you can tell which end is up.

I'm using a pen similar to this one; I don't know the brand off the top of my head, it's whatever they sell at Wal-mart. And then all I did was roughly find the middle of the canvas and make a cross there, and count out ten stitches each direction until I filled the grid.

My suggestion is to do it in a well lit environment and not when you're tired so you don't end up with my situation! :p

these pens work really well. They’re water soluble and come off pretty easily while sketching. You just have to wait for the fabric to dry to draw again.

I picked up this marker from Michael's for about 8 CAD. Make sure you do a small test before you start marking up your project, just to make sure it comes out nice and easily with water. I'm using DMC 18ct aida and it works great.
