I get the point you are making, but I think people get a little annoyed because Angry Birds has been marketed more than just about anything I have seen. Sure, other video games have had T-shirts, action figures, and plush toys. Other games have had McDonald's toys and mugs. Hell, stuff like Star Wars have done the same thing.
Not many games have smeared their image over HDMI cables (Amazon), dog toys (Walmart), seat covers (ebay), golf balls and golf club covers, and things like iphone cases, skiing glasses, speakers, headphones, flash drives, lanyards, magnets, confetti, ballons, umbrellas, towels, greeting cards, and recipe books. (Everything after the seat covers is online at their store.)
Sure, they can market however they want, but Mario has been around for decades and hasn't touched half of the stuff that is now covered with Angry Birds. It's isn't really a good comparison.
