A novel I read basically was about an alien artifact and how a human team tried communcating to it. Turns out, the artifact wanted to know as much about humans as us about them. The way it did it, was that originally it had a sphere of hydrogen in it, if you put it helium, it then chucked out the next item in the periodic table. That way it would know in what stage of evolutionally process we were. Were we still in the iron age? Did we discover radioactivity etc..
