I recommend going on Amazon and getting a restored 13inch Macbook Pro. Macbooks hold value and I am still using my 2014 (which I bought used).

Here is a link:

That one is above your range but thats the one I'd recommend because of the storage. In short, its worth the extra $.

Also, theres this:

That is within your range, but it has less storage.

Your daughter will 1) love the cool factor of having a macbook, trust me. and 2) A used one is probably the best deal on the market. Macbooks are durable and will last through college (would have to get a battery replacement after about 3-4 years but they will still work great!).

There is no reason to get a new laptop anymore - once everything went to Flash storage and over 8GB RAM, the features "maxed out" for what your daughter is going to use it for. The rest is durability and Macbooks are VERY durable.

As a Mac user with several Macs, I can also say that both of these laptops are actually MORE preferable than the ones that came later on because these have better keyboards. Apple replaced the keyboards with a bad design and only recently fixed it. So, a Macbook from 2014-15 is kindof seen as the "last good bunch" by fans.

Just be sure to get it before Christmas and check it out, like make sure it works and stuff. Amazon has a good return policy and you can likely get it exchanged if its got broken parts (unlikely but anythings possible). I'd turn it on and charge it up, and see how long the battery lasts. If it goes dead real fast (like under 1 hr) then I'd send it for a replacement.
