I wouldn't say being a good sketcher is absolutely critical but it's a good skill to have, especially for developing and conveying ideas quickly.

practice
Seriously, start filling up sketchbooks - draw everything. Do some longer drawings post for a critique in /r/art or /r/ArtCrit .
Most successful sketches come down to doing 2 things well.
Perspective, and Line Weight.
I'm sure you'll be able to find hundreds of more links/tutorials/youtube videos.
But seriously...practice.

Best book you'll find looking at Architectural Drawing from a drawing first approach, rather than graphical standards and what not. The chapters are structured like a semester long class. So you get the class without actually going.
