I read this as a kid. I tried to reread it when I was older but gave up because I found it intolerable. When you need a break, read Clouds.
But Plato is important since he is the biggest source of evil in western culture. You can see how degenerates would use his methods to attack tradition.
I like Peter Meineck's translations. He is an ex-Royal Marine turned classics scholar who does a fantastic job of making his works interesting and accessible (so I'm sure he would be hated by some).
