If you scroll down and go to the new and used option, it is at $72 now. When I got mine, it was at 60. The modem was basically new, it had the original plastic on it. If you want to save money, you have nothing to lose. Just return it if it dont work and ask for a new one.
Modem has been working great for me.

How many devices do you have? I have 7 devices (computer/tablet/phones) along with 2 TVs streaming 4K so although my speed is not the fastest (advertised 60mbps), I decided to go overboard with my modem/router set up.

If you only have a few devices, you can easily find them on Amazon for fairly cheap like this one. You can find general xfinity modem/router on craigslist/eBay fairly cheap if you don't mind them being used previously.

I am using this set up to have dual-band wifi and all that jazz. I don't even know if it makes a difference but I got the router for fairly cheap so why not.

No worries. If it's only a year old it may just be because that modem is not supported by TWC. The surfboards def are, and above is the setup I'm running.

Check TWC supported modems and see if the modem you have is on the list. If it is on the list they were just bullshitting you and you probably just had a bad modem or something. Maybe it's still under factory warranty? If not, id buy that $50 surfboard modem. Do you have a router like what I listed? If you do have a router you can just plug that into the surfboard modem. If you dont have a router and would rather have everything together this one is probably better for your.

Fuck modem rental fees.

Some appear to be combo router/modems, like this one. What's the downside there?

Heres a copy and paste from someone else I replied to with a similar question.....

I was renting their modem for years and finally got my own. I would highly recommend this 1 I am showing you. I bought mine used off Amazon for $60 bucks and it works great. We have around 14 devices connected and sometimes netflix running 4 times at once with no issues. It's used, so just return it and get a new one if somethings wrong with it. You really don't have anything to lose. Mine came in a plain box, but the modem had all the plastic film on it. It was basically the same as new.

Budget is a little low for Router/Modem combos. The nicest ones are 200-250$. Here is a pretty decent one for 127$: https://www.amazon.com/SURFboard-SBG6700AC-DOCSIS-AC1600-Router/dp/B00QQ7SG48

My boyfriend and I are moving to a new place, and getting a Comcast package for 75 Mbps. We want to buy our own modem/router, because screw a $10 rental fee.

What's the best way to go? We'll have like a 800 sq. ft. one floor apartment. It's just the two of us, so no more than three connections (excluding phones). Mostly casual internet browsing and Netflix. I just want to make sure we're maximizing the speed, since we're paying for it and all.

We were looking at this ARRIS all in one, the SBG6700AC, DOCSIS 3.0 compatible. Is that worth it?
