I'd suggest just getting a cheap Chromebook for your kid as it'll work out of the box, works with Youtube/Netflix, is portable, has better specifications and automatically updated so should stay secure.

The RPi can do most things but it requires a lot of fiddling especially if you want flash to work or to play video like Netflix. Case + RPi 3 + 16GB + microSD card + microUSB PSU are the minimum parts you need. Add a HDMI monitor + keyboard + mouse if you don't have spares as well.

I bought this one off of Amazon - "ASUS C201 11.6 Inch Chromebook (Rockchip, 4 GB, 16GB SSD, Navy Blue)" (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00VUV0MG0/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)

Looking at my order history, I got it for $166 (guess in my mind it was a little more), thanks to a Amazon Warehouse deal. They ad said the box was scratched but the item inside was fine. I would have classified the damage as "scuffing" on the outside box and yes, the chromebook was in perfect condition. An absolute STEAL! They have a bunch listed on the website right now at http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B00VUV0MG0/ref=dp_olp_used?ie=UTF8&condition=used - just looked for the ones posted by Amazon Warehouse Deals.

Sounds reasonable as long as you understand that you're going to be using some sort of online office suite like Google Docs or Office 365.

And if I were you I'd get a Chromebook with 4 GB of RAM.

EDIT: Looking at Amazon, they have the Asus C201 with 4 GB of RAM for $189.99 link . If you can live with the ARM processor's limitations when it comes to Linux, that's a pretty good deal, in my opinion.

u/medes24 · 5 pointsr/chromeos

Asus is probably where you want to be. Asus C201?

Both the C201 and the Flip sport 4 GB RAM variants but both are also using that Rockchip ARM CPU. The performance on it is fine but if you're doing any Linux voodoo, it might be annoying.

I just looked at the Amazon Canada site. For your price range I would consider:

Probably something like this.
ASUS C201PA-DS02 11.6 inch Chromebook (1.8GHz Quad-Core, 4GB LPDDR3, 16GB SSD), Navy Blue https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00VUV0MG0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_y4Npyb91ATPM6

And buy a 128GB SD card for storage.

I agree that a Chromebook would be a great option, if you are willing go that route then this would be a great choice.

Get the ASUS Chromebook C201 (4GB RAM edition) !!

It's super cheap to get online., would also advise buying a microssd card!

The battery life is RIDICULOUS, like 12+ hours and about 8+ hours of normal use. The touchpad is super nice, like, almost macbook nice.

The processor is ARM, and it doesn't have microcode!

Please see the following links:

  • https://libreboot.org/docs/hardware/c201.html contains material on how to get libreboot running and the c201's read/write screw functions. (/u/libreleah if you're reading this, thank you for your work and am eagerly waiting the devuan/debian guide!)
  • https://archlinuxarm.org/platforms/armv7/rockchip/asus-chromebook-flip-c100p this guide works flawlessly with the c201. If you're an arch person, this is amazing.
  • http://docs.kali.org/kali-on-arm/kali-linux-asus-chromebook-flip this klali linux version works amazing out of the box, and has the SAME touch config that the chromeos uses. It DOES have some stuttering problems when opening graphical programs (i was using synaptic and it always freezes) and yes, "omg kali is not a desktop flavor it's root only man" just set up a normal user and it's pretty rad!
  • https://www.reddit.com/r/linux/comments/4ojrrt/thinkpad_x200_vs_asus_chromebook_c201_as_a/d4d7amh/ /u/dimkr gives an awesome rundown of the c201 and it's pros and cons.
(Also, /u/dimkr, if you're reading this, could you PLEASE help write/edit the debian install guide on the debian page and/or libreboot's page? Or show us how you used the arch guide with debian to install devuan? thank you sosososo much!)

There's some other features of the c201 that you may not like. If you go full linux distro, if you want 100% libre, then you must buy external wifi that will use 1 out of the 2 usb slots, and there will be no graphical acceleration from the mali drivers as they're closed source.
u/Michiganders · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

Are you fine with a chromebook? They don't run windowsOS, they run ChromeOS. If so, something like the ASUS C201 for $170 would work just fine.

For me, when I travel I mostly require a computer which will allow me to do basic things like checking mail and internet websites. For this reason, I leave my Mac at home and travel with an Asus Chromebook. The Chromebook is lightweight, has a great battery life (13+ hours), and it's cheap ($200) so I don't care if it gets lost or stolen. It's not fancy but it suits my needs for travel.

Granted, this may not be a great recommendation if you plan on working on the computer for long periods. But it's great for occasional use while traveling.

This is basically what I've been looking at, really wasn't sure what is in my price range that wasn't a chrome book, however this is the best I've seen so far

Edit: Just found https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00VUV0MG0/ref=psdcmw_13896615011_t1_B01APA662K

It seems to be more of a case of being unlucky,

I combed through the US amazon reviews, of which there are hundreds, and a minority report these hardware defects:

Here you go.

The RockChip ARM CPU is fully compatible with LibreBoot and distros that Respect your Freedom^TM. You'll want to reformat and remove ChromeOS, of course.

Chromebook is the way too go! Not complicated like windows and no bloatware.

  1. ASUS C201PA-DS02 11.6 inch Chromebook (1.8GHz Quad-Core, 4GB LPDDR3, 16GB SSD), Navy Blue https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00VUV0MG0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_eyroybXKVJTG7

  2. Acer Chromebook 14, Aluminum, 14-inch Full HD, Intel Celeron Quad-Core N3160, 4GB LPDDR3, 32GB, Chrome, CB3-431-C5FM https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01CVOLVPA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_bAroybRBQ5NCB

  3. Im currently using this to take with me too school. Always when getting chromebooks get 4gb of ram. Its currently priced at $169. This is very budget oriented for good performance. It suits me well when i have like 5 tabs open doing hw and researching.

  4. This is priced at $230 and it comes with a faster processor, bigger screen, HD screen, more flash memory, and sleeker design. I would recommend this one if money is no problem fitting in ur $250 dollar budget. She wont be dissapointed.

Make sure she has a gmail account because thats how you activate and login to use ur system.

Chromebooks will fill your needs, maybe not go for the cheapest one though

this one is a good example of what you should get but you might want to pick up a external hard drive

u/yerxa · 1 pointr/chromeos

First: Do you already have a specific model in mind?

HP 11 https://www.amazon.ca/Hewlett-Packard-11-6-Inch-Chromebook-Celeron/dp/B01KWCIC8C/
ASUS C201 https://www.amazon.ca/Chromebook-11-6-Inch-Rockchip-Quad-Core-Processor/dp/B00VUV0MG0/

Budget

Under ~$350 CAD

Performance & Use Case

Google spreadsheets, web browsing, youtube, netflix

Android Apps

I don't think I need anything right away off of Google Play Store

Type & Functionality

No need for tablet functionality. Decent display would be nice. No need for touchscreen. Would like something I can carry between rooms and type on my lap. Definitely not a desktop.

Build Quality

While I would like something that looks nice, I will take function and lower prices over looks.

Availability (Where are you From?)

Canada

If it's only for watching 1080p video and reading, I suggest a chromebook. THIS one is under $200 US.

u/alpacarama · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

An ASUS (a brand known for REALLY good build quality), $193: https://www.amazon.com/Chromebook-C202SA-YS02-Ruggedized-Resistant-Celeron/dp/B01DBGVB7K/

A Samsung, $189: https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Chromebook-11-6-16GB-XE500C13-K04US/dp/B01N5P6TJW

Another ASUS, $194: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00VUV0MG0/ref=psdc_13896615011_t2_B01N5P6TJW

Only the last one can run android apps, as that's still not very common in chromebooks.

u/Orangematz · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

How about this?

u/NottingHillNapolean · 1 pointr/scrivener

I've had good luck with an ASUS Chromebook running Linux via Crouton. However, if you're "clueless as to computers" as you mention earlier, I wouldn't recommend it.
It does have the advantage that the Linux version of Scrivener is free, but you get what you pay for. It works great, but is no longer supported.
