I'd suggest this one, if you can buy during the current sale:

https://www.amazon.com/ASUS-Chromebook-Clamshell-Processor-C425TA-DH384/dp/B07VT254P6/

Amazon also has some promotion with AMEX, so if you have an american express card to pay with you can save an additional $20 or more.

This chromebook specifically fits for your needs because it lacks a touchscreen, which some consider a drawback as it limits android gaming possibilities, but you don't want to be distracted by games so there you go. It also has a highly rated keyboard, probably the best in it's price range, and 8GB of RAM and a 2026 OS support end date.

Edit: if you have an AMEX card, this page explains the promotion: https://thepointsguy.com/news/amazon-amex-membership-rewards-discount/ (I got the $20 off $100 or more offer)

Even though I don't really need another device, I'm thinking about getting this as a spare device.

This is a good one. I just got it and have used at least 6 different chromebook’s as daily drivers over the past two years. It’s $379 but look out for Black Friday deals or buy a used one from Amazon Warehouse Deals

I don't know if it counts as king, but the Acer aspire laptop they're selling on Amazon right now is a full fledged Windows laptop, could easily dual boot Ubuntu 19.10, and firmly sits in the Chromebook price range at $260. It also has a ryzen 3 3200u that benches out better than a Celeron 4100 (about the %30 faster on userbenchmark as long as you're ok with going with ryzen. BTW AMD apparently is know for running Linux better than a lot of Intel machines.

Edit: I also found this chromebook by Acer that has 8gb of ram, but a tiny 64gb internal memory and an M3-8100y processor that I can't find a benchmark for, but if you're looking for a Chromebook it looks promising.

Or you could just get this: Asus Chromebook C425 Clamshell Laptop, 14" FHD 4-Way NanoEdge, Intel Core M3-8100Y Processor, 8GB RAM, 64GB eMMC Storage, Backlit KB, Silver, Chrome OS, C425TA-DH384 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07VT254P6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_gRjRDb6975NPV

Hi, if you are okay with Chrome OS, you could get the ASUS Chromebook C425 that is currently on sale for a great price. You get an m3-8100Y processor, 8 GB RAM, and 64 GB eMMC storage. The weight is 2.8lbs and it has a 1080p 14" IPS display.

If my CB2 crapped out tomorrow I'd be looking at the Asus C425.

It has a larger 14" screen, but smaller bezels so it's about the same size overall.

Wow, the Asus Chromebook C425 is on sale now for 380$ https://www.amazon.com/Chromebook-Clamshell-NanoEdge-Processor-C425TA-DH384/dp/B07VT254P6
8gb of Ram, i5, 1920x1080, back lit keyboard... That may be the best value now.

I'm actually considering this for my MIL. Only downfalls are not 2 in 1 design so consequently no touchscreen.

I would say Asus chromebook flip c434. I got mine on sale for 560, but there is also it's little brother without any touch and it has a matte screen, but not as bright and is more plastic, but it seems like it is still a good choice https://www.amazon.com/Chromebook-Clamshell-NanoEdge-Processor-C425TA-DH384/dp/B07VT254P6/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=asus+chromebook&qid=1569378027&s=gateway&sr=8-4
