If you want to go a few hundred over $2000

Major difference is the GPU..

I'll say what most people will say on here.. Just get a desktop and a cheap laptop. With that $2000, you can build a computer that will be 10 times better than the laptop.

I had a rough $2000 budget and I decided to do that.

The ROG laptops are very well built and have an excellent cooling system that should keep the laptop quiet and cool even under heavy stress. However, they are very heavy at 10 pounds, which severely limits their portability.

If you wanted to play BF4 and more intense games, your best bet would indeed be the G750JZ for around $2500, but of course a gaming desktop could be had for much less.

I have an ASUS G750JH. I can say it is fantastic. It's sturdy, it's fast, the dual SSD's on RAID 0 are incredibly fast for load times in WoW and loading maps in other games.

It runs really cool for being a gaming laptop, there is no extra annoying frill around the keyboard to run into and I like the physical buttons on the trackpack for when I don't have a mouse plugged in. I would make the same choice again if I had to. Although I'd probably get the newer ASUS G750JZ, haha.

oh my. that ROG is so beautiful. now i'm waiting for it.

but theres also this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IAACWH6/

it has a pretty shitty battery life though, but better specs than the 500

u/Lorithad · 3 pointsr/pcmasterrace

24GB in mine

edit: I work out of town frequently. It was the only acceptable option.

Ask yourself what do you need this laptop for.

I do not dispute Apple's quality and their efforts on making laptops work smoothly, but if you gonna play games on MBP, you might be for a little more than a slight disappointment.

I'd choose Apple for general work and limited gaming (means you don't play much or mainly play something that already supported natively) and gaming laptop for, uh, gaming.

Some of laptops that might be in your price range:

ASUS G750JZ - It's big even for 17.3", but you get great cooling and perfomance.

MSI GS60 Ghost - Light and thin. More powerful version coming soon? (Razer Blade as alternative)

MSI GT60 Dominator Pro 3K - Perfomance-wise comparable with ASUS, not as great cooling though (a cooling pad is recommended). Has a 3K screen, though gaming won't benefit from it much, and more traditional proportions of a gaming laptop.

I can't say much about Clevo/Sager laptops. They are quite overpriced in my country, so I haven't looked into them much.

EDIT: That is also the best for gaming with the best Laptop GPU available.

u/Voluptuous_Panda · 2 pointsr/Alienware

I have an Alienware M17X R4, it was a pretty good laptop when it worked correctly. I've had it for 2 years now and he motherboard is crapping out. Apparently this is a common issue with this particular model. Dell replaced the motherboard for free, but they gave me another faulty one, so my problems are still there.

I would do a little more research before making such a big purchase. Maybe check the build a PC subreddit if portability isn't a huge issue for you. You can get a much more powerful desktop PC compared to any laptop. I've heard that the ASUS ROG G750JZ is a slightly cheaper, yet better laptop. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00IAACWH6/ref=aw_wl_ov_dp_1_2?colid=193QH68XEDSZ3&coliid=I297IJ2HA2AS4O

Besides that dealing with Dell Customer Support is a huge pain. Do some shopping around before you make a huge purchase like this. You may find something you like much better if you broaden your horizons.

Also, for the high end of the budget this is the one to look at

u/My_6th_Throwaway · 2 pointsr/oculus

If you are dead set on a laptop you will end up spending a good deal of money for something really capable. As others have said Apple and Alienware are more expensive for the performance level compared to other laptops(with Apple you are buying nicer looking and feeling hardwere, with Alienware you are paying for their marketing team)

MSI makes some good laptops and so does Asus. Anything with the top end mobal graphics chips will give upper midrange performance compared to desktops, completly useable for VR as long as you turn some things down a bit with AAA type games.

u/Huskynator · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

For a single GPU laptop this is nice as it gets in terms of both quality and performance, the ASUS ROG G750JZ-2 It comes with the 880m (a 770 desktop that has been slightly under-clocked) expect to MAX most games with AA. Also has a quad core CPU, 24gb ram, 1tb HDD, 256 GB SDD, a blu-ray drive and other nice things. Also has a decent screen, not great but decent and gobs of ports. I have a laptop with a 780m and its freaking fast. It maxes Metro LL and BF4 no problem, and the 880m is 10-15% faster. Oh and its got plenty of cuda cores for Adobe products and other cuda accelerated programs. Hope this helps.

u/fourdots · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

The most powerful GPU the Alienware 17 supports is the 880M. That will not meet your requirement of being twice as powerful as a PS4. On the other hand, a system with a 880M will run basically every currently released game on the highest settings, so ...

I'd suggest the Asus G750JZ over the Alienware 17, though. Way better build quality, and amazing cooling. They're both extremely heavy - I wouldn't describe them as portable - though, and you could get the same sort of performance in a smaller Clevo/Sager (like the NP8258 or NP8268). Definitely not the MSI GT70, it has awful cooling.

Since I haven't seen it mentioned yet, I picked up one of these: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00IAACWH6?pc_redir=1406686496&robot_redir=1

In particular I bought it because A) It's ASUS, B) It reviewed well, C) It had an 880M GPU D) Good size SSD and traditional drive E) The cooling system it uses. So far I'm enjoying it a lot, though 8.1 took a bit of getting used to. (I work in IT, and I'm used to hearing people complain about new interfaces, but since I remember doing everything in DOS, so I try to give new interfaces a chance.. but the 8.1 Metro.. yeah I couldn't last a day before I installed Start8 to get the start menu back. )

Also since I mentioned I work in IT, and you don't know enough about computers. Let me just stress the importance of reviews from sources you trust. Fact is even though I know my stuff, and I could look at stats and get a general idea how something might work, benchmarks of performance are the best way to determine if something will meet your needs, and things like build quality, keyboads, etc. Are even more important on a laptop and you won't get all that information until someone gets their hands on it and puts it through it's paces.

as for the Mac rec earlier, I retract that now that I have had a chance to look over their specs. Looks like they haven't been upgrading their video cards these last couple years like everyone else so they are still back on the 750m's. At their release they were great, now though you can do a lot better for the money.

What you are looking for is a dedicated video card with at least 3gb vRam (any of the 870m's or the 970m's), along with an i7 47xx/48xx and no less than 12gb of memory. For what you will be doing those a pretty much a must to get an enjoyable experience while you work. I personally like ASUS, Gigabit and MSI for manufacturers because I've used their hardware in desktop builds before and I like their stuff. Do your research though, make sure the program YOU will be using will work with nvidia cards or AMD cards, and you should be fine.

You can buy a similar variant of the model from other sites like Amazon UK. If you really want you can buy a cheaper model enhance the RAM and HDD yourself. That would be more cost effective.

Can I ask what the main purpose of the laptop is?
Gaming? Work?

u/ASK_ME_IF_IM_KAY · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

OK here are the computers that are on my watch list, these have had sales in excess of 500$ off in the past if i remember correctly. and again, you can ship these to the UK for a little extra cash. I personally am looking for a 17.3 inch screen, but if you want a smaller screen (cheaper probably) tell me and ill do the research for you. The Asus is what you should be looking to buy, and if you are willing you can buy these laptops refurbished for super cheap (1000 bucks). These are the absolute best i could find after all my research, anyways, here they are: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00IAACWH6/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=1752VPBNI9TIU&coliid=I37JW8F0B1DLPR&psc=1

BTW let me know if you liked them and my work payed off! XD. and I know these prices are a bit premium, but they are the best mix of quality and price i could possibly find. and last note, the only problem with Asus is their absolutely terrible customer service, and whenever you buy a gaming laptop (whatever the brand) you run the risk of dysfunctional models (read reviews for yourself and decide for yourself if the computer is a safe buy)

If you want it to be light, go for what kwongger said: the Razer Blade 14

If you want something more powerful, but less light, go for the Asus G750JZ

If you're looking into spending that much, You're better off in the territory of the [Asus ROG] (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00IAACWH6) line of gaming laptops.
