Neither of those laptops are ideal. If you provided the games you'd like to play, it would help everyone understand your performance needs. For a general purpose Ultrabook, the soon-to-be-released ASUS UX303LN-DB71T would be a much better choice. It comes with:

  • i7 4510U dual core processor
  • 12 GB ram
  • 256GB SSD
  • GT 840M dedicated GPU w/ 2GB DDR3 memory
  • 3200 x 1800 QHD 13.3" display
  • probably around 6 hours of battery life
  • 3.2 pounds / 0.7” thick

Its dedicated GPU would be helpful for those light gaming needs, and it costs less than the Samsung for better specs.
u/OrangeBuck · 5 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

There are gaming laptops across the spectrum from $500 up to $2300. While filling out the sidebar form would yield the best recommendation, the Asus N550JK is honestly the best pick at $1000. The Nvidia GeForce 850M is a mid-range card that should do well for most things, and the laptop itself is a solid piece of metal. Definitely the best thousand-dollar laptop on the market (at the price of minimal portability).

$500 : Acer Aspire E5 571G : Very low end. Not great perfomance.
$750 : Lenovo Y40 : Surprisingly good performance and a good budget pick as the little brother to the Y50.
$1000 : Asus N550JK : Best Value or whatever
$1250 : Asus UX 303LN : Starting to get much better portability in exchange for some performance.
$1500 : Gigabyte P34Gv2 : Best laptop that combines portability and power in exchange for a terrible (4 hrs) battery.

Above this are the Razer Blades and MSI GT lines. I know nothing of these realms besides their superiority.

If you want slim with some ability to play games you should think about this. http://www.amazon.com/Zenbook-UX303LN-DB71T-Quad-HD-Display-Touchscreen/dp/B00KTL21RA

I just recently bought this bad boy and while its slimmer than a macbook pro, it also has a higher resolution screen and a gt 840m which is by no means a power house but I can still play Dota 2 at 1600x900 at a silky 60fps. It even plays other games like Titanfall, FIFA, and Cities: Skyline at lower resolutions.

u/whomad1215 · 4 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

The newest macbook air has the best battery life.

I'll recommend the Asus Zenbook 303LN for a windows alternative.

u/construktz · 3 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

I'd go with the Dell XPS 13.

The IPS display is going to be ideal for your work, and it's going to have the absolute best battery life available for you. The integrated Intel HD 5500 graphics on the new Broadwell i5-5200U has performance just below Nvidia GT 820M dedicated graphics, so Dota 2 on lighter settings isn't going to be an issue.

The Asus Zenbook UX303LN is a really nice laptop as well with Nvidia GT 840M dedicated graphics, but if you're doing photo work, it's not going to be ideal. The 13.3" 3200x1800 IPS display is nice, but it has some color issues (just like the Yoga 2 Pro and Samsung ATIV Book 9), which would be prohibitive for your needs.

ASUS ZENBOOK UX303LN-DB71T

  • Price: $1,163.99 (Amazon.com)
  • RAM: 12GB DDR3 [4GB (On-board) + 8GB (Removable)]
  • CPU: Intel i7-4510U (2 GHz) [More Information]
  • GPU: nVidia GeForce 840M (2 GB DDR3) + Intel HD Graphics 4400
  • Storage: 256 GB SATA III SSD
  • Screen: 13.3"; 3,200 x 1,800 (QHD+ w/ Touch Screen)
u/NeverRealNano · 3 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

Don't know how much that helps you, but I'm looking for a notebook and have similar requirements (specs, budget) as you have. I'm most probably going to get the new Asus Zenbook ux303ln ! (Even though here in Europe we get one with slightly different specs (FullHD screen instead of QHD screen for one))

Otherwise I would always recommend Dell! I had a few Dell laptops already and never had any serious complaints, just the price range for their XPS laptops is a little high. (And I guess it's time for a new XPS series soon)

u/squired · 3 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

I'll second that and would love to hear any recommendations as well. I came to make a thread but it looks like we're looking for the exact same thing, budget and all.

The UX303LN looks to be absolute perfect, save for that damn QHD screen! From the scaling issues to the yellow issue, I'm just really wary of it. I wish they'd just offer it in 1080/FHD. I don't even care if it is touch capable.

u/fourdots · 3 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

The Asus UX303LN is what I'd suggest. High-resolution screen, and a reasonable GPU which should be more than fast enough for SC2 and LoL. Also very pretty, though I prefer the UX301LA.

You can get an external blu-ray drive pretty cheaply - search "blu-ray usb" on Amazon, for instance.

u/Orangematz · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

This or this would be your best bet.

u/Dub2921 · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

I'd have a look at the following laptop OP:

ASUS Zenbook UX303LN-DB71T 13.3" Quad-HD Display Touchscreen Laptop
1,249.99 on amazon.com with FREE shipping.

Pretty much ticks all of the prerequisites you have listed. Very light weight at only 3.2 pounds plus it features a Core i7 and SSD meaning it will fly through the various applications in adobe creative suite. Ultrabooks in general are great because the battery life is long lasting. In the this case, it lasts 8 hours.

u/2cats1dog · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

I think the Asus Zenbook line would meet your criteria pretty well, although some of them are slightly over 3lb. I'm currently writing this from a ASUS Zenbook UX303LN-DB71T and so far it's treating me very well. At $1250 it would be under your budget and I think provides almost everything on your list.

u/scheise_soze · 2 pointsr/technology

What's your budget?

I recently picked up an Asus Zenbook 13" for $1300 on Amazon.

It has:

13.3" Quad-HD touchscreen display (3200 x 1800)
Intel Core i7-4510U 2 GHz.
12GB RAM
NVIDIA GT840M 2GB VRAM.
256GB Solid State Storage
802.11 A/C. 8-hour battery life.
3x USB 3.0
1x HDMI
1x miniDisplayPort
Bluetooth 4.0
SDXC slot

And it weighs next to nothing:

3.2 lbs

12.7 inches x 8.8 inches x 0.7 inches ~ 0.8 inches

u/drswnemo · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

This seems to meet all of your needs, except the U series processor. I'm considering buying this model myself, the specs look really nice for the price.

u/NOT_AN_APPLE · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

The Asus Zenbook is, in my opinion, better.

First, brand-wise, Asus has a higher standard of quality control. Any Asus you buy has been through more extensive tests than any dell you buy. Dell uses cheaper generic parts like the motherboard or the webcam in my experience and that's what usually fails.

Specification wise, the Asus has 3 USB 3.0. The dell has 2 USB 3.0. The dell is tenths of an inch smaller. The asus has micro HDMI and mini displayport while the Dell has only mini displayport.

Also I think the ASUS is cheaper on amazon. It also looks cooler.

If you have the money, you could jump to the pimped out version of the ASUS which is pretty much a gaming machine that looks like an ultrabook. It's one of the best values out there.

u/ds-h · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

The new ASUS Zenbook UX303LN looks like a good choice. Light and thin with a 3200x1800 resolution and dedicated graphics. Still at the pre-order stage, but I've heard it will begin shipping this month (not sure). Only thing that's different from your desired specifications is the 13.3" screen size.

EDIT: whoops i got beat

u/Nibiria · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

It'll run League almost for sure, LoL doesn't take up much processing or graphical power (though it probably won't run on anything above Medium, probably on Low is your best bet). I'm not sure how good the screen is because I don't own one, but I am looking at that and the current Asus Zenbook, which has a built-in graphics card. That will 100% be able to run League. However, it is more expensive and the screen has been said to have issues with color reproduction. Hope this helps!

u/SaneBRZ · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

> $1000 up to $1200 if it has a beautiful design/amazing features.

Like the Zenbook UX303LN-DB71T?

  • 13.3 inch, 3200x1800p touchscreen
  • Intel i7-4510U + 12 GB of RAM
  • 256 GB SSD
  • Nvidia GT840M with 2 GB of GDDR3 RAM
  • Price: $1230

QHD+ display, plenty of RAM, somewhat decent CPU and a SSD out of the box. And it's an ultrabook with a dedicated GPU. I would say these would qualify as "amazing features".
u/rise_against227 · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

You might want to check out this zenbook

It's in your budget, an ultrabook, and has a 840m which is really impressive for its size. I'm not sure how good they keyboard and trackpad are though because I have the original zenbook from a few years ago and the trackpad and keyboard are pretty bad. Maybe they improved it though.

u/findlaptopplz · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

A nice laptop for sure, but ya a little over my budget unfortunately and not as aesthetically pleasing as the ASUS. So in the case that the ASUS Zenbook UX303LA has a ULV dual core CPU then is this an option again?

u/themellowtiger · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

Pick the ASUS Zenbook UX303LN-DB71T if portability (lightweight + thin) is more important, or the MSI GS60 GHOST-012 if power is more important.

You can buy a lower spec'd 1080p model for $800 right now on amazon. The 3200x1800 model is coming out in April and it will cost $1000. Although personally I would rather go for the much beefier spec UX303 that's a tiny bit thicker and has a bit less battery life for $1190, and that's still less than the base new Macbook.

u/Kep0a · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

Out of all of them, the N550JK is the most powerful, but least portable. All these laptops should run WoW just fine, that game is ancient. From what I can tell, you listed the Zenbooks CPU / GPU wrong, that one has an older 4000 series cpu, which might lose in performance, I cant remember. It's about equal to the XPS model mentioned. (dat xps 13 display doe) EDIT AGAIN: Asus website needs to fix its shit. So much is wrong and not updated, or amazon and a bunch of other sites are completely wrong.

Portability wise, Macbook Pro 13 has the best specs for longest battery life and lowest weight..

The Zenbook has an older brother, the UX303LN, with a more power hungry but better i7 and 840m gpu. Battery could be an issue though, idk.

u/imyxle · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

There are not many ultraportables with discrete video cards. One laptop I have been looking at is the ASUS UX303LN which would be a 13.3" screen. Not sure if that is a deal breaker or not. It is also slightly outside of your budget and swapping the SSD apparently voids the warranty. Perhaps check out Lappy List and pick out a laptop that has a lot of your specifications.

u/dtotheyi · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

Also, what do you think about this one versus the JK?

u/sk9592 · 1 pointr/buildapc

The Asus ZENBOOK UX303LN is thin and light and has an NVidia 840M. It's not an amazing GPU, but it's better than the best Intel HD Graphics. It comes in at just under $1300.

Considering your girlfriend is not a gamer, I would consider the size more important than the graphics card.

http://www.amazon.com/Zenbook-UX303LN-DB71T-Quad-HD-Display-Touchscreen/dp/B00KTL21RA

u/Treasy · 1 pointr/pics

Higher resolution doesn't matter if the color reproduction is shit. It's like having headphones that can play louder music, but its all muddied anyway so who really cares?

In the USA the Macbook is $1500 and the ASUS is $1300.

from the review:

>The Zenbook’s display however has serious problems when it comes to reproducing colors. As I’ve told you in my review, the Samsung made panel on the UX303 paints mustardy yellows and skews the other colors as well. That’s a known problem, the same panel is used by Lenovo on the Yoga 2 Pro and by Samsung on the ATIV Book 9 Plus and they partially corrected the issue with BIOS updates, but Asus did no such thing, at least for the time being. Hopefully they will, but even so, the Retina Display on the Macbook still remains capable of showing colors more accurately.

u/sniper1rfa · 1 pointr/pics

Where do you get that? Similarly configured, they're currently about $275 different. Don't compare the $800 one to a retina MBP, because they're not the same.

The base Asus is cheap, yes, but it's also got way lower specs than the base MBP. The top model of the Asus ($1225 currently) is pretty comparable to the second tier MBP ($1500).

http://www.amazon.com/Zenbook-UX303LN-DB71T-Quad-HD-Display-Touchscreen/dp/B00KTL21RA/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1422023602&sr=1-1&keywords=UX303LN

http://store.apple.com/us/buy-mac/macbook-pro?product=MGX82LL/A&step=config

EDIT: actually, the 301 (because the 303 is no longer on the Asus website) is $1400, $100 cheaper than the MBP. So I was right.

u/ZeroGPX · 1 pointr/Guildwars2

What about a system like

Its an extra 50 dollars but the asus ux303ln pretty much meets your needs. http://www.amazon.com/Zenbook-UX303LN-DB71T-Quad-HD-Display-Touchscreen/dp/B00KTL21RA/ref=sr_1_cc_1?s=aps&ie=UTF8&qid=1418667791&sr=1-1-catcorr&keywords=asus+ux303ln
Its an ultrabook so highly portable as well as having a discrete graphics card that can manage the games you listed. The yellows are off but it dosen't bother me (I own one and I love it).
Also its one sexy machine. Any questions just ask me.

u/n00bface · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

Thanks for the advice! I see you're the second person to recommend both the Lenovo and the Macbook. In my experience, Android development with Android Studio (which is now the only IDE supported by Google) does require high-end specs. I have a relatively high-end laptop already, but I'm missing the SSD which I think is imperative at this point. I've started working on several projects with many files (going well into the 100s) and my PC always slows to a complete crawl. Gradle compilations also take several minutes for me now (5+) which is unacceptable :(

I'm happy to see that the Lenovo is available is with 802.11ac chip and other upgrades I might want, although the price gets pretty steep with RAM and screen upgrades. The size and weight are important to me, so unfortunately the T540p is probably out of the question. Another user recommended this one -

http://www.amazon.com/Zenbook-UX303LN-DB71T-Quad-HD-Display-Touchscreen/dp/B00KTL21RA/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1419878899&sr=1-1&keywords=asus+zenbook+ux303ln

how do you think it would compare to the T440p? The Asus has everything I'd get in the T440p, plus a graphics card, for a few hundred less. Is there something else I should be considering with the Lenovo?

u/Ewilan07 · 1 pointr/leagueoflegends

I was thinking of buying a Mac 13" 8gb i5 iris - for school & LoL , but after reading your comments , it doesn't feel like a great idea , maybe I should go for this one ...

u/PharisaicalJesus · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

I bought a Asus Zenbook 2.5 years back and i love it.
there is this beastly motherfucker here, but it's most def not the most bang for your buck.
It's got intel Core i7-4510U @ 2.0 GHz turbo 3.1Ghz. NVIDIA GT840M 2GB VRAM dedicated graphics card. An impressive 13.3 inch 3200x1800pixel display. WOW. 12gb ram, 256gb ssd...better get an external drive too. VERY little in the way of ports. :'( going to need the included dongles and possibly a usb hub too.

My zenbook just had an ivy bridge i5 with no dedicated graphics card. a fantastic 1080p screen. Set me back 1 grand b/c ultrabooks were new. Love my zenbook and its sexy aluminium body.

u/WorstAmerican · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

Check out the Asus zenbook.
Light, 3.2 pounds. i7, 12GB ram. Has the GT840M graphics card, which is about as good as you're going to get in a non-gaming laptop, and will be able to play most new games in medium settings.

It has a 256GB SSD hard drive. You're not really going to find a 512 GB SSD in a mainstream laptop, you can get an external hard drive if you really think you'll need it.

The range of laptops that can run Dota 2 is huge, especially if if you have $1500.

If you want to max out Dota 2 then SAGER NP7338 would be able to run it at 60 fps at max settings.

Someone mentioned the UX303LN-DB71T though the resolution is quite large so I'm not sure you'd want to run Dota 2 at a lower res on an $1500 laptop.

List price: 1,299, currently 109 dollars off.

ASUS: $1,189.99
Apple, with edu discount: $1,170

Apple's Macbook actually costs less when discounted for students (ASUS has cut price on theirs, it was 1,299 THE SAME price as Apple)

u/Dain42 · 0 pointsr/Android

Let's compare a fairly slick Asus Zenbook (not really marketed at gamers, but it would be a competent machine) with a couple MacBooks. (The second one is just for shits and giggles to see what a $3000 machine looks like. I looked at a few comparable gaming laptops, and they tended to come in about $400-500 cheaper, depending on the model.)

Spec | ZenBook | MacBook Air | MacBook Pro, maxed out
----|-----|----|-----
Processor | Intel Core i7-4510U 2 GHz | Intel Core i5-4260U @ 1.40GHz | Intel Core i7-4980HQ @ 2.80GHz |
Passmark Benchmark | 3965 | 3640 | 9617
RAM | 12 GB | 8 GB | 16 GB
Storage | 256 GB SSD | 256 GB SSD | 1 TB SSD
Graphics | NVIDIA GT840M | Integrated Intel HD 5000 | NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M + Intel Iris Pro
Size/Weight | 12.70 x 8.80 x 0.70" / 3.2 lb | 12.8 x 8.94 x .68" / 2.96 lb | 14.13 x 9.73 x .71" / 4.46 lb
Price | $1,299 | $1,299 | $3,199

That Zenbook has a touchscreen, a better processor, more ram, and a discrete graphics card, all in the same form factor as the MacBook Air (give or take a couple millimeters). The only place it falls shorter is in the claimed 8 hour battery life. So it's not all that much worse. Either should get you comfortably through an average day.

I based the processor models in the MacBooks off of the specs using Google to find a matching entry on ark.intel.com.

EDIT: I also checked the video card benchmarks for the first two: Asus is at 1,469 and Mac is at 605.
EDIT 2: Added dimensions/weight.

I mean, where the fuck would we be without apple's innovation?
