Take a look at the Asus Vivobook 15 which is a very nice laptop in your budget
Screen Size: 15.6” FHD,
Processor: Intel Core i3-8145U (Up to 3.9GHz),
RAM: 8GB DDR4
Storage Type: 128GB M.2 SSD,
Comments: This laptop has a fast SSD for booting which is great value at this price point, FHD screen and an 8th gen
processor is also great value as well. 8 GB of RAM will allow for decent multitasking (with its processor being the only
thing that will cause a bottleneck). Its low weight at 3.75 lbs makes it ideal for students
I've compared several, but I'll link two of the ones I mentioned in an earlier comment.

If you're okay with a micro SD card slot, I think that the ASUS Vivobook 15 is a good option within range. 1080p 15.6" display, 3.8lbs, i3 processor, and 8 GB RAM.
If you are returning it, have a look at this laptop it is also 400 dollar. It is a bit short on storage, but if you are just planning to use it for content cunsuming, word and work mostly in the cloud it should do the job.

If you have the monney to step up to a 500 dollar budged you have a mutch wider range of laptops to chose from.
This is a accepteble laptop for 500 dollar. https://www.amazon.com/Acer-i5-8265U-Keyboard-Fingerprint-A515-54-51DJ/dp/B07RF2123Z/ref=sr_1_17?keywords=laptop+500+dollar&qid=1570962516&sr=8-17

It’s an asus vivobook 15 laptop, quite a nice budget laptop with an i3. Another option would be the acer aspire 5, with ryzen 3 3200u which has a better graphics (worse cpu though)

Friend asked me to recommend something no more than $500 for his wife to take some online courses. I see a lot of recommendations for the Acer Aspire 5 Slim Laptop A515-54-51DJ, $550 total breaks his budget. Still gonna suggest he get it, but I was wondering about something under $500. Looks new without reviews, but any opinions on the ASUS VivoBook 15 Thin F512FA-AB34? If he says "No way I'm going over $500" I thinking that one or maybe the cheaper Aspire 5 slim A515-43-R19L. Anything else I should send his way?
Thanks in advance!

If you can budget a little then how about this Asus Vivobok because it comes with everything you need, i3 core CPU which is one of the best in your budget and great for your usage, 8 GB of ram for smooth multitasking, Good SSD storage of 128 GB for faster boot up and loading, full HD screen like you wanted, and it is not too much over your budget.
Hi! Assuming your grandparents won't need as much storage space, I think the ASUS Vivobook 15 with a Core i3 processor might be a good match, well within your budget. Buying an i5-powered laptop seems like overkill.

Looking to upgrade my young son’s laptop. He mainly plays Roblox, but will likely branch out as he gets older. Looking for something that will be decent for a few years. Thank you!

<$400: ASUS VivoBook 15

As others have mentioned, you'll have to purchase Microsoft Office separately. Also, you might look into getting an external hard drive (if you don't already have one) for storing videos and other media.

I actually haven’t got around to choosing one yet. I been looking at a other computer that’s a $100 and sum more but I feel like it’s a worth upgrade, but I could be wrong. The other laptop is the
Asus Vivobook 15 Thin and Light Laptop, 15.6" FHD, Intel Core i3-8145U (Up to 3.9GHz), 8GB DDR4 RAM, 128GB M.2 SSD, Windows 10 S, F512FA-AB34, Slate Gray https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07RK5M35T/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_EtvpDbXBP4YXR
Get the Asus Vivobook 15 Thin and Light Laptop because its just perfect light gaming and you should be ok when needed for your computer science activities.
Can someone give me a breakdown of why this deal is better than the regular ASUS VivoBooks?
Your laptop is obsolete since it has tech from 2006.
The reason why you are having problems watching Youtube videos is because the Intel GMA 950 is incapable of decoding the videos so that you can watch it. When the graphics card or integrated graphics core cannot decode the video, the CPU must do so... The CPU is not specifically designed to decode video so your single core Intel T1300 CPU (1.66GHz) or dual core Intel T2xxx CPU (1.66Ghz to 2.16GHz depending on the specific CPU) is basically always running at 100% to attempt to decode the video.
Since 2006 there have been numerous newer video encoding technologies used to create videos. Two of the more popular ones are the H.264 and H.265 codecs; there are others as well. Because the Intel GMA 950 was design long before H.264 and H.265 codecs were used / developed, they are incapable of decoding those types of videos. All video streaming services (Netflix, Hulu, Youtube, etc.) all use video codecs that the Intel GMA 950 simply cannot handle.
Note that some models of the Latitude D620 will have nVidia Quadro NVS 110m. However, that does not change the fact that it too is in the same boat as the GMA 950... it is obsolete.
You really need to buy a modern laptop even if it is only to watch videos. You can buy a relatively inexpensive new laptop for $350 or less with a modern Core i3-8130u like the $329 Acer Apsire E15 which has a "classic design" meaning it has a DVD drive (basically gone from nearly all modern laptops). Or the more modern designed Asus Vivobook 15 for $349 with very thin bezels (making the 15" laptop about the same size as a "classic" 14" laptop). It has a SSD (solid state drive) instead of a hard drive, but it is pretty small at only 128GB. However, it is extremely fast compared to a hard drive. I have a laptop with Windows 10 installed on a hard drive that takes about 90 seconds to boot into the desktop. That is opposed to another laptop with Windows 10 installed on a SSD which takes less than 20 seconds to get to the desktop. The Asus also lacks a DVD drive which is standard these days.
