Below budget, how about the ASUS Zenbook UX410UA? It has:

  • i7-8550U 4-core processor

One year ago I bought ASUS UX410 UA (with lower specs than this one). Cannot be happier. Nice matte display, light, good battery life, up to 8 hours.

Several technical things that were a dealbreaker for me:

  • it has free memory slot, so you cand expand the memory later, with up to 16GB SODIMM
  • it has two HDD slots - one for 2.5", and one M.2
  • it has aluminium body - that is pretty rare in this price level
  • important thing, that is hard to check: it does not throttle the processor, under load, as it has really good ventilation.
  • it does not overheat - never.
  • and it has 14" inch display in 13.3" inch body - so it has really small edges around the display.

    10/10 would buy again.

If you have to go for a 15.6 inches, the Dell G7 you mentioned would not be a bad pick in terms of a balance between performance power and display quality. If you want something between a 15 and a 13 and that which has a better display and of course, would perform similarly to the system you mentioned above in photo editing and the other tasks mentioned, you could look into this ASUS ZenBook Ultra-Slim Laptop as well.

With your commute in mind I would suggest a lightweight laptop like the Asus Zenbook this version does not come with a dedicated graphics card as Civilization is a very easy games to run. Its functional and with proper care be able to last you though university. Its below the $1000 cap and you get what you pay for. Nothing fancy, just a reliable and functional laptop that will meet your needs.

I have had good luck with ASUS laptops. I think that they tend to give you that extra bit of quality for the price.

If I were you I would look into the Vivobook line or the ZenBook line. Vivobooks tend to have the best price/performance/build quality whereas the ZenBooks usually don't have a dedicated graphics chip but are thinner, lighter, higher build quality and have better battery life.

I have a ZenBook that I have been using for 3 years now and it is still as good as new. I bought it at the time because it was the most macbook-like machine that didn't cost a fortune.

Also consider the ASUS ZenBook series. They have good build and are really portable. This particular -> ZenBook has the latest 8th gen processor, 8GB RAM, 128GB SSD + 1TB HDD storage, 14" display full HD, a comfortable backlit keyboard (1.6mm key travel), aluminum body and weighs only 3.1lb.

Best to try it out at your local stores and see if it works for you.
