I don't know of any laptop you'd want to keep for 6-7 years. You'd be better off buying a $1000 laptop every 3 years. Even at that price point you can get excellent machines and you skip the problem of having outdated hardware. Take a look at this Zenbook. Computers today have much better SSDs, faster RAM, better peripherals, more power efficient CPUs and better GPUs than those 2-3 years ago.

u/Dullorasses · 3 pointsr/UltraBooks

The UX303UA has a backlit keyboard. Why would anyone skip a major feature like this? It's awesome.

Welcome to suggestalaptop. I recommend getting the ASUS ZenBook UX303UB laptop because it is in your budget range and it fits all the criteria that you have outlined . It is very powerful , sporting a quad core Powerful 6th-generation Intel Core i5-6500U processor, also it is 13.3inchs and a touchscreen as you perferred, 8 GB RAM , and a nice 256 GB SSD. The weight is awesome 3.2lbs is a dream weight for the quality that this laptop carries.

u/psm510 · 3 pointsr/UltraBooks

UX303UA for $850. It just went back up recently coming from $799. For $350 more you could get the UB which has double Memory, +4GB ram, dedicated GPU, and a jump from an i5 to an i7.

There is also the UX305 which is an older edition that only comes in gold. Not worth it IMO if you could get an even better one for $100 more.

u/LonerIM2 · 3 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

I would suggest ASUS ZenBook UX305UA because it comes with 13.3-Inch Full-HD IPS Anti-Glare Matte Display with an Ultra-wide 170° Viewing Angle, Intel Core i5 6200U 2.3GHz (Turbo up to 2.8GHz) Skylake Processor(that should be enough for your math calculation 8GB RAM(great for multitasking), 256 GB SSD(great for faster booting and loading), Windows 10,10-Hours Battery Life (that is advertised with low usage, so I would expect 7 hours with moderate usage) and very light at 2.9 lbs.

If you want something with a touchscreen you can get this very similar in specs and price.

u/massivewang · 3 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

I suggest the XPS 13, included other options though.

HP Spectre x360

  • 1440p screen
  • i7 6500U
  • 8GB ram
  • 256gb SSD
  • 12.79" x 8.60" x 0.63" (HxWxD); 3.2lbs (thinner than MBA, only .2 lbs heavier)

    Dell XPS13

  • i5-6200U
  • 8gb ram
  • 256gb ssd
  • 3200 x 1800 resolution with touch screen
  • 12.0 x 0.6 x 7.9
  • 2.78 lbs (actually lighter than the MBA!)

    Zenbook Ux303UA

  • 1080p screen
  • i5 - 6200U
  • 8gb ram
  • 256gb ssd
  • 8.8 x 12.7 x 0.8 inches
  • 3.2 lbs

she will definitely love this very professional look ASUS K501UW-AB78. it houses a great i7 cpu, 8gb ram, a dedicated 960m gpu, and a 512gb ssd. it is very portable at just over 4 pounds, great battery life and a great built. the ASUS ZenBook UX303UA is an alternative to consider as well.

u/techneeeq · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

This Asus Zenbook would play CIV 5 on medium settings or higher and has an excellent build quality. Also very light weighted and sleek.

u/benzamine · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

How about an Asus UX303UA? Integrated graphics, but it's a brand new Skylake chip

I'd recommend just getting an Ultrabook with a graphics card in and an i5 or something. But here are some for 2 in 1's.

Here are 2 options I found:

Higher-end: http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/yoga/900-series/yoga-910/?action=testB

Cheaper: http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/lenovo/flex-series/flex-3-15/?action=testB

Here's options for an Ultrabook that I'd get:

Best choice - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B014VHVZFQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_J3nyybHTFCNQ4

Cheaper one, but still very good! - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B014VHW24Y/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_.1nyyb450832N

Hope these help you find a laptop for yourself (:

EDIT - I don't know what I'm talking about dedicated graphics cards in 2 in 1s.

u/Michiganders · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

I would not recommend the ASUS Q304 because it has an HDD, unless you really want the extra storage. I feel an SSD would be much more beneficial.

Maybe look into the HP Envy for $680 if you're interested in budgeting. It has quite a bit of value for it's price with a new kaby lake i5 processor, 8gb of ram, 256GB PCIE SSD, and intel HD 620 graphics. It's build quality is pretty good and mostly aluminum, and it's light at at 3.1 pounds, has a very long battery life (advertised at up to 14 hours), and a backlit keyboard. If you want a touchscreen maybe look into the Asus Zenbook UX303 for $700 with similar specs.

If you want a 14'' with near identical specs, maybe look into the Acer Swift 5 for $750.

Other than that, consider the Dell XPS 13 if you want an incredibly small form factor, or a refurbished 2015 Macbook Pro if you'd prefer MacOS.

u/bazilbt · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

I've liked Asus Zenbooks. This one here looks like it meets your specs. There is also a slightly more expensive version but with a better processor here.

u/The--Technician · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

The ASUS ZenBook UX303UA would actually be a very nice option for you. It has a great build quality, equally matched by it's performance. If I were in your position though, based on the fact that you want a great battery life, awesome keyboard and touch pad as well as decent performance, I would go for this Lenovo Thinkpad T440p. The quality of it's input devices as well as it's bigger storage, RAM, and better battery life are the things it has over the ASUS.

u/berzerknova · 2 pointsr/UVA

Try this

u/shopineer · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

If you want a 13" with better specs for the money, what about a the ASUS ZenBook UX303UA?

Powerful 6th-generation Intel Core i5-6200U 2.3GHz (Turbo up to 2.8GHz). Skylake Touchscreen/ 8GB RAM/ 256GB SSD Storage. Backlit keyboard. 13.3 inches IPS LED backlit display, 1920 by 1080 resolution.

http://www.amazon.com/ZenBook-UX303UA-13-3-Inch-Touchscreen-Windows/dp/B014VHW24Y

Can you find that within budget in Singapore?

u/construktz · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

The Asus Zenbook UX303UA would get the job done. It's high quality, highly portable, has a backlit keyboard, great specs, and is right around your price range. If sleek is what you want, this will do that.

If you want better connectivity options, consider this manufacturer refurb Dell XPS 13. It has all the same perks as the Asus, except better battery life, virtually no bezel around the display, and it has Thunderbolt. It also comes with the factory premium service warranty, so there isn't some big risk of getting a lemon. You can even get extended warranties on it.

It does lack the USB-C port, but Thunderbolt is better.

u/arioblabla · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

Yeah, that's nice, but isn't that one https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B014VHW24Y/ref=psdcmw_13896615011_t3_B01F1Z79C0 looking more solid? And actually looking just better? Looking for specs, they are quite similar, aren't they?

Try to avoid intel m-prozessors then, i would go for a asus ux303ua with a Skylake i5 and FHD-Touchdisplay.

I have the lb with i7 and 940m and the touchpad is perfect for my standarts.

If you want to get a cheaper one: the 305 has no backlight, a broadwell i5 and is non touch. If you want to get touch on it you habe to get a QHD display BUT it only comes with a core-m-prozessor and i really dont like those, because then you have a fanless cooling system and the cpu can get really hot when you use your laptop for a longer period.

Here are 2 links to both options:

303: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B014VHW24Y/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?qid=1450340762&sr=8-2&pi=SY200_QL40&keywords=ux303ub&dpPl=1&dpID=41%2BKe3rTWGL&ref=plSrch thats the older broadwell option as i see now, also a option till the differenc is only in the cpu and this not very much

305: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B013KKANTE/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?qid=1450341193&sr=8-4&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=ux303ub&dpPl=1&dpID=51C1sNaz87L&ref=plSrch

Apple is actually one of the few manufacturers I would consider buying refurbished from, but only direct from Apple themselves. If you're going the MacBook route, wait a few months for the new models to drop when they'll be clearing out the older ones.

With that said, unless you're attached to OSX as an OS I see no reason to buy something that outdated.

If you're leaning towards the Windows camp, check this out. Much newer i5 than the MBP, 8GB, larger SSD than the entry level MBP, marginally lighter, and you get the nice bonus of a touchscreen.

To address the question you probably have: for gaming on an ultrabook, or any low-voltage Intel processor from the same generation (6200U, 6500U, etc) the graphics performance is the same. There is no advantage to the i7. Even in processor intensive tasks, there is little difference between the two. Both dual core, similar clock speed, and so forth. As an honest assessment, a U series processor will run basic games like LoL and Civ but I would invest in a cooling pad for extended gaming sessions. It will likely get toasty.

u/scarflash · 1 pointr/buildapcsales

which zenbook did you get? I just bought this one and this one to see which one's best.

u/Z2810 · 1 pointr/LaptopDeals

This one is pretty good:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B014VHW24Y/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_fq78AbZ7J96CW

6th gen Intel processor with 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD and it's 13". For only $699. It's a little expensive for a laptop of this caliber. This one is better.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079QZ5DD7/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_1u78AbC39JZ5F

14", 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, and a type-c port.

u/mamaangry · 1 pointr/Laptop

For your budget, you may want to consider this one. Good luck!

u/azmals · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

Thanks. I couldn't find it on the ASUS website, looks like it was replaced by this http://www.amazon.com/ZenBook-UX303UA-13-3-Inch-Touchscreen-Windows/dp/B014VHW24Y/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1449554878&sr=1-1&keywords=ux303ua with the only real differences being a better processor and different color. Not sure if it's worth the $80 increase. Can you elaborate on the battery life?

u/ndralcasid · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

Yeah thanks!

Actually I do have two other Asus laptops I'd love your input for comparison.

First is this. Is the processor a significantly better, or would I basically be paying more for backlight and touchscreen?

Second is this. It seems more geared towards gaming, but the specs are nice. Not sure if the processor is significantly better enough to sacrifice what it seems like twice the bulk and half the battery life. I do think the prospect of potentially playing some higher end games seems nice though.

u/KMKtwo-four · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

I'd suggest the Asus Zenbook. It has a

  • dual core i5 or i7
  • 8-12GB of ram
  • a discrete NVIDIA GPU
u/SaneBRZ · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

> Well that blows. I actually live relatively close to Canada... wonder if they have the rose color in CA....

I doubt that.

> This seems curious... and also like I will have to carry around an adapter to all conference rooms?

Probably.

The UX303UA is also available in the US, but in "smokey brown", whatever that means.

u/ArmoredTricycle · 1 pointr/laptops

I'm looking at getting the UX303UA. It's almost exactly like the one you linked except for a few things: it has a Skylake CPU (slightly better performance and battery life) and a glossy touchscreen display. The 305 has a matte non-touchscreen display. The color and finish of the laptops are also slightly different. If you want the i5, you're gonna have to get the Titanium Gold color. For some reason Asus only offers certain CPUs with certain colors. I wish they wouldn't do that. Anyway, my friend has the exact one you linked, and he loves it. I've played with it and I would have no problem using it as a work or school laptop, but I personally want the Skylake CPU and the glossy touchscreen.

Edit: the UX303UA is the exact same as the UX303LA other than the CPU. LA has a Broadwell and UA has a Skylake.

u/orbitalinterceptor · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

So if i'm seeing websites listing the 305UA as having a backlit keyboard, the site is incorrect? I'm not arguing, I'm hoping you've actually held it and can confirm. Amazon and Microcenter both list the keyboard as backlit. I'm seeing so much conflicting info.

Edit: my bad, I was looking at the 303, not the 305. Bought the UX303UA, am in love.

u/The---Technician · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

If you would go for a 13 inches machine, this ASUS ZenBook UX303UA would be a great pick for you. It ticks all your boxes.. Has a nice i5 processor, 8 GB RAM, a fast 256 GB SSD and a nice quality touch screen. It also has a full aluminum chassis and a very sleep and sexy design.

u/-_Jim_- · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

If you're willing to pay $1399 for the MacBook, I'd look at this (click the Core i7 version): http://smile.amazon.com/dp/B014VHW24Y/ref=psdc_565108_t2_B013KKANTE

Better processor, 4x the storage, more RAM, touch screen (used more often then you'd think), dedicated graphics, etc. Comes with a year of accidental damage protection.

u/starchaserro · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

Hi,

I found the ZenBook UX303UA
which fits your required specifications, including metal body.
But be careful with the screen, the QHD version isn't supposedly very good.
The FullHD screen on the other hand is ok: https://www.notebookcheck.net/Asus-Zenbook-UX303UA-R4051T-Subnotebook-Review.160709.0.html

u/Orangematz · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

If you're looking for something well built and aren't gaming, don't go with a gaming machine. Most of them within this budget won't have as good of build quality as an ultrabook.

I would suggest going with an XPS 13 or this.

u/Wubbls · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

Wow this seems packed to the brim specwise. I might even consider saving some money and getting the Zenbook UX30US. Thanks!

u/SebAnEm · 1 pointr/laptops

Hi again. So I think I've decided to get this Zenbook. I've been reading several reviews of ASUS laptops, and it seems that there tends to be issues with the display, trackpad, and keyboard. Have you had any issues with your 303UB?

u/BennCon · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

okay, didn't realise you had universities over there at all, my bad. Something like this, this, this, this or this would be best, depending on just how much you game, whether you need touch-screen/all-in-one capabilities, thinness etc

u/AdityaRav · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

The Dell XPS 13 is an insanely good choice for your requirements.

However, while the official reviews are good as they should be, keep in mind that most users on amazon have rated it below par(<4 stars) for driver issues.

So that leads my search to the latest model xps 13 9350 on amazon where users have not complained about driver issues or other such issues.

LINK: https://www.amazon.com/XPS-13-9350-13-3-Inch-Performance-Processor/dp/B01D1YFQM8/ref=sr_1_5?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1469629724&sr=1-5&keywords=dell+xps13

The above model has an >4.5 star average rating/reviews. It has the latest skylake i5-6500U processor and 8gb ram.
However, it has 128gb ssd only. You can expand using the 3 way(sd/sdhc/sdxc) card slot by buying a good 128gb UHS/U3 sdxc card like the one linked below:

SDXC card link:
For 65$(Excellent card) -> https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NP63Y4K/ref=twister_B009RVUYAY

Remember not to put your games/applications on the card as much as possible. However it can hold multimedia like songs/movies/files etc., and you'll get an incredible transfer rate(Approx 1/3 speed of an good SSD and twice the speed of HDD transfer)

If you want a reliable tried and tested choice, Asus laptops on amazon are good deals at their price points and perform well:

I just bought the ASUS UX303UB for grad school this fall and I love it. It was about $1200 USD but they also have the UX303UA which is cheaper. The UA has an i5, 256 SSD, and 8 GB RAM while the UB has an i7, 512 SSD, and 12 GB RAM. I can handle most games on mine but I'm not sure about the UA. If it's not heavy gaming, I think you will be fine. Both are 13.3 inches and lightweight.

Same as here

u/Evinreud · 1 pointr/Laptop

Hey, sorry for the late response.

If you are comparing the Dell 7559 to the XPS 13 that's the same price, you'll be looking at two different processors:

i5-6300HQ (Dell 7559) and i3-6100U (XPS). In terms of processing, the 7559's is quite stronger than the 6100U, because the 'u' series of processors are low-voltage to save battery life. As a result, any turbo boost in frequency speed is quite limited in length, whereas the 'hq' processors are designed for heavier use, considering it has two more cores for processing (though core number =/= CPU strength).

It comes down to power vs. portability. You may want to check out other brands like Asus's Zenbook series (the UX3-- models), however the laptops that have strong processors are over $1000. The Zenbooks with similar CPUs to the Dell XPS are around $800, such as this one. Unfortunately, the 7559 will still outperform heavily in processing power.
