I'd suggest a pair of open-backed headphones since I've found that those headphones tend to have better soundstaging to help me pinpoint where people are.

I found closed headphones tend to have more "immersive" sound with more bass, but if you're looking for something for purely competitive performance I think an open-backed pair would do you well. There's some generalizing going on here, but in general I personally feel open-backed headphones are better for gaming.

Here's a couple suggestions around your price-point - disclaimer that I haven't actually owned any of these (except for the original AD700 which I can vouch for being great for gaming), and it's merely meant to serve as a starting point for cans to check out. Filter the reviews and find the ones where people mention the words "gaming" or "soundstage".

oh no... one of these is not like the other

try these

try these for something portable

if bose are a choice you're considering, bose are EXTREMELY overpriced for bass-heavy sound, the only thing they have over their competitors is they have excellent noise-cancellation

u/Erosis · 8 pointsr/buildapcsales

Also on sale at Amazon for $88.13, an all time low for Amazon.

For general listening, these headphones are quite good but I prefer other cans. For competitive gaming, I think these are the best you can get for under $400. The soundstage on these are enormous.

The Steps too PC gaming headset success:

First a disclaimer. PCgaming headsets are subpar compared to equivalent consumer and entery level audiophile headphones. Buying a gaming headphones basically means you're paying money for the marketing term "gaming."

  • Don't buy a gaming headet
  • Buy an open back pair of entry level audiophile cans like These ( I assure you they're normally cheaper, they seem to have a price hike right now cause they're low on stock)
  • Buy an Antlion mod mic or a zalman mic 1
  • Now you can enjoy far superior sound quality than any game set can offer you. Bonus? You'll also be able to enjoy music at a much higher quality than you would have before.

$1200 on a build with an APU? Alarm bells should be ringing.

I've dropped the headset - buy a proper pair of audiophile grade headphones. Ask /r/headphones if you want more advice but something like these and an antlion modmic is so much better than a headset, it's not even funny.

I've used many headphones/headsets for online/competitive shooters: AKG K52, AKG Q701, Audio-Technica ATH-AD700x, Beyerdynamic DT990 (600Ω), HiFiMan HE-400i (the revision), HiFiMan HE-500, HyperX Cloud, Koss Porta Pro, Monoprice Monlith M1060, Philips Fidelio X2, Philips SHP9500, Sennheiser HD598, Sennheiser HD700, Sennheiser HD800, Superlux HD662 EVO, Superlux HD668B, Superlux HD669, Superlux HD681 EVO, Tritton Pro+ and Turtle Beach Ear Force XP Seven, and AD700x is the one I recommend regardless of budget unless people have other preferences. Games top out very early, and around the $100 mark, diminishing returns set in hard.

There are three sonic properties that determine the performance of headphones/headsets for online/competitive shooters: soundstage, imaging and (instrument) separation.

Soundstage is produced by the headphone, not the game. It's perceived space and environment of sound. A small soundstage makes the environment around you sound confined or boxed in. With a large soundstage, the environment sounds much more open, spatial and natural. You probably have to experience it yourself to understand it.

Imaging is inherent to the audio content. It's how accurately the locations of sounds/objects are reproduced.

Soundstage and imaging are generally best achieved with open-back or semi-open-back headphones, which means the headphones have cups with grills/perforations/openings that allow sound to freely pass through, unlike closed-back headphones that have cups with solid shells which isolate sound from passing through to some extent. Soundstage and imaging constitute positional audio. You could say they are the stereo equivalent of virtual surround sound. I don't think stereo, no matter how large it is, sounds fully three-dimensional as virtual surround sound at all times. Dialogues and very loud sounds like tanks, jets, trains, etc. near you tend to sound very intimate and dominate in either ear when you don't face them. Virtual surround sound has its drawbacks too: it compresses and degrades the sound quality. I find it most noticeable with rain, waterfalls and splashing water; they sound akin to white and pink noise. Subtle details become faint or not audible. When headphones already have decent soundstage, imaging and separation, I find that virtual surround sound diffuses the positional audio and the ability to pick up and locate/track audio cues.

Virtual Surround sound varies a lot from processor to processor (CMSS-3D, Dolby Headphone, SBX, etc.) How you perceive it compared to stereo also depends on the soundstage, imaging and separation of the headphone, and how games are mixed. I recommend using a headphone with a large soundstage and great imaging and separation, like AD700x, before deciding on virtual surround sound. If you absolutely want virtual surround sound, then I strongly recommend SBX from Creative, especially over Dolby Headphone.

Separation is how you discern individual sounds from a range of overlapping sounds. This is only important in games that are competitive.

Attach an Antlion ModMic 4 and you have a headset. Alternative mics: Massdrop Minimic, Neewer, Sony ECMCS3, Zalman ZM-Mic1, Blue Snowball, Samson Go

If AD700x costs too much, then I recommend HD668B. Other open-back options that are well-regarded in the audio enthusiast community are Audio-Technica ATH-AD500x, Sennheiser HD558/HD579 and Status Audio OB-1. I strongly advise against HyperX Cloud if you don't need sound isolation. For closed-back, I recommend AKG K52, Superlux HD662 EVO and especially Superlux HD669 over the Cloud. Status Audio CB-1 is another well-regarded option, which is compatible with the V-MODA BoomPro mic.

Here's a few options. Depending on where you are in the world some might be more feasible than others. I'm talking from a UK perspective, YMMV.

u/True_Patrician · 5 pointsr/blackops2

Don't buy a headset, they're shit.

Go with some decent headphones, probably either this or this (or if you want to go cheaper this which will still sound leagues better than any $200 headset) as I know they both have good soundstage.

For mic, get a Modmic which is $30 and will have better voice quality than most $200 headsets.

Now to connect it to your 260 you need an adapter which luckily Steelseries makes a nice one.

If you still really want an all in one headset though, go with an Astro they're still a bit pricy but at least they're not shit like TBs are.

u/majorscheiskopf · 5 pointsr/headphones

It's basically a Audio- Technica AD500 or AD700 (The AD700X and AD500X sound essentially the same, as far as I can tell, while the X versions might have slightly more bass). The AD900 would be an improvement on this sound signature towards neutrality, whereas something like an AKG K7xx would be a substantial increase on the low end of this sound signature, and a decrease in the peakiness of the treble, which creates an overall similar sound signature, but one which is much more pleasing to most people.

In terms of an actual label- it's mids focused, with a 10k peak.

To expand a little bit on what ImKrimzen is getting at...

This community is really, really hardcore about headphones. I say this in an affectionate but matter-of-fact way: we are a bunch of elitists who mostly look down our noses at products like the one you're asking about. Most gamers here prefer to use an awesome pair of headphones with a regular 3.5mm audio hookup, and then attach something like this mic to it. This tends to give you better value for your money than buying an overpriced gaming headset. Now, playing on console is a little more complicated...I've never even used a mic when console gaming, but if you can find a way to set that up via a bluetooth mic or something, then you can always just use the PS4 controller's headphone jack to plug in a regular pair of headphones and then go to town. (Or alternatively, your TV's aux out if it has one, or optical digital out through a DAC.) Here are a couple of relatively inexpensive headphones that have an absolutely stellar reputation around here for gaming. (And will also bring your movies and music to another level.)

Less expensive

More expensive

Most expensive (or actually not, because they're on sale)

Edit: Oh, just one important thing to note: this is /r/headphones 101, but since you're new, I'm just going to assume you may not realize that all those options I linked are open-back headphones, which means that they do not isolate sound well and they leak your sound out. In other words, other people around you can hear your stuff and you can probably hear noises in your environment, so if you need sound isolation, get a closed-back pair like this. But the advantage of open-back is that you generally get better-quality sound for your dollar, and the sound stage is always better, meaning the locations of sounds in your 3D headspace are very detailed and precise. This is really awesome for immersive gaming and movie-watching, so people love open-back headphones for those uses.

'Gaming' is just a term companies use to cater to people who play video games (gamers). You don't want to buy from someone like Logitech who makes mice, keyboards, webcams, desktop speakers, 'gaming' headsets, etc.

You want to buy a pair of quality headphones (not headset) from a music company like Audio-Technica (Japan), Sennheiser (Germany), AKG, Grado, Shure, Bower & Wilkins (UK) and so on. These companies (besides maybe Sennheiser) don't really advertise to gamers, so you're kind of stuck in the loop of Logitech, Corsair, HyperX, Creative, etc.

I'm not sure what kind of music you're into, so I can't make any suggestions but I can give you starter things to look into. Check out the suggestion thread over in /r/headphones. Add a standalone mic or a V-Moda Boom Mic.

I responded to a similar thread on girlgamers here;

>My advice is to not buy a headset, and instead get a nice pair of headphones and a clipon mic. The majority of "gaming headsets" provide vastly inferior audio quality, are USB, and are really overpriced for what you get. see: Astro's.

>My suggestion is watch this video; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d1rXcJuEsy0

>To get a decent understanding of how headphones work, and what a lot of the general terminology means (Amp/DAC/Ohms/SNR/Digital and Analog signals/etc).

>Then proceed to;

>And they'll probably tell you the exact same thing. A good pair of headphones combined with a clip-on-mic will not only provide the best audio experience for your money, but also the best audio experience period.

>This is a good price-range guide for headphones as well.

>in general;

>5.1 and 7.1 are a gimmick, virtual 5.1 and 7.1 dont do anything but allow 5.1 and 7.1 audio channel audio to be played as 5.1 and 7.1 audio channels.

>Generally in gaming, virtual 5.1 and 7.1 can actually muddy up directional sound and make your audio experience significantly worse if the game isnt optimized for that exact audio spartialization.

>You dont want USB if you're going to be using an Amp/DAC or a Soundcard, because it wont actually use your amp/dac or soundcard.

>Popular recommendations are like;

>Audio Technica ATH-M50

>Audio Technica ATH-AD700

>Audio Technica ATH-AD700x

>Sennheiser HD-280 Pro

and then a clip-on microphone like this one;

But the tl;dr is, buy a good pair of headphones and a clip on mic. They will sound better, last longer, and potentially be significantly cheaper.

Also, check out Massdrop for good deals on Headphones and Amp/DAC's.

This is from his IAmA so you may not have seen this, but Palmer Luckey says the quality of built-in headphones are similar to the ATH-AD700. Reviews on Head-Fi for the AD700 are positive, noting that they have great soundstage, clarity, and detail.

As for your positional audio question, the audio team at Oculus have built a custom audio SDK around those headphones since they know the exact specifications (audio drivers, impedance, etc.) that everyone will at least have (both developers and users). But if you decide to use your own headset, the audio SDK uses two things to help with positioning: HRTFs (head-related transfer functions that calculates sound reflections off shoulders, torso, how long a sound reaches your left ear vs right ear, etc.) and environmental effects (subtle sound reflections off walls and ceilings and floor). These two things will calculate each sound position every frame as you move your head around.

I'm a bit of an audiophile, and I personally have a set of MrSpeakers Mad Dogs with an SMSL amp, but I might stay with the built-in headphones most of the time because of convenience and I get to listen to what developers intended me to hear. We'll be okay!

You can read more about the nitty gritty Oculus' audio stuff in their documentation here: https://developer.oculus.com/documentation/audiosdk/latest/

Hope this helps!

"Surround sound" that isn't built into the game itself is bullshit.

For both bass and treble (bass for music, treble for footsteps), I'd recommend a pair of Beyerdynamics. The DT770 if you need isolation, or the DT880 or DT990 if you don't care about isolation. The 880 and 990 will give you a better soundstage. The 32 ohm versions since I'm assuming you don't have a dedicated amplifier.

Another low-isolation option is the Audio-Technica ATH-AD700x or the ATH-AD900x. I'd recommend the ATH-AD700x as of right now since you can get a used pair for 25% off here. They're a little bass anemic, however, but to hear footsteps you really want a treble-forward pair of headphones. They have a crazy soundstage too.

u/Tater_Tot_Casanova · 3 pointsr/xboxone

Agree with the above comments re: good pair of headphones vs gaming headset. You’ll get better sound game / mic going this route. My current set up is as follows and it’s the best sound experience I’ve ever had ( if you don’t mind a few cords): Audio Technica AD 700x $100 + ModMic 4 $55 + Y split cable $15 to plug into the 3.5 mm port on your controller. The above is all I really needed to play but last week I also grabbed this Dac Amp. $65 and the whole set up sounds even better and doesn’t drain my controller’s battery life.

The difference between open back and close back is that open back headphones have the advantage of having better positional audioBut the disadvantage of typically lower bass quantity(although more accurate) and you can hear people around you(irl). The AD500x and AD700x are probably some of the

best headphones for positional audio at 150$ and below except for the that are a bit more expensive 144$. They also have good higher frequencies meaning that you'll be able to hear footsteps behind you

Where the enemy that shoots at you is located etc.

Closed backs on the other hand typically has a more punchy bass(low end frequencies) but at the sacrifice of positional audio.

I am sure there are others around that has good alternatives here as well, but those are my picks in that price range.

I was always a fan of the Shure in-ears. Little warm sounding for some people's taste. The SE215 is the current $100ish model. I was also really interested in the RHA MA750s for a while but ended up getting a grab bag from massdrop with some MEElectronics for cheap.

I wear glasses too and have never had any problem with over-ears. I used to daily drive a pair of Audio Technica AT-AD900x with zero glasses issues. The 700x is very nearly as good at costs around $100. Pads are plushy and never gave me any issues with pressing on the arms of my glasses.

ATH-AD700x $105

The ad700x's were on sale recently for $73 if you wanted to wait for them to go on sale and the price for the ad900x's is the lowest I've ever seen.

Edit: BTW, these are headphones that are recommended for FPS gaming due to low/no bass and high positional awareness. You would have to buy a mic in order to talk. You could get a VMODA if you modded the headphones or just bought an external mic.

u/St0rmr3v3ng3 · 3 pointsr/pcmasterrace

If you are looking for a headset you should consider headphones as an alternative. Massdrop got the HiFiMAN HE-350 for 100 bucks right now. Newegg got the Philips SHP9500S for 50 bucks.
Amazon has the Audio Technica AD700X for 103$.

Why would you buy a headset? They have poor quality, are prone to breaking frequently (usually by having either the cup on the microphone side dying or the headband snapping) and offer bad sound quality for the price as the majority of the budget goes towards "gamer" advertising and gimmicky design.

I believe the average PCMR member is very knowledgeable on hardware, gpus, monitors, keyboards etc but overlooks treating his ears appropriately.

u/WTF404 · 3 pointsr/headphones

So I put this on yesterdays thread, but it was late at night so I'm unsure if it was seen at all. sorry if it was and just no one had any suggestions, ill put it here one more time.

I know its a lot, so please bear with me and I'm sorry for the wall of text. I have an idea of what I want, but first what im looking for in a headset;

Budget - 100 is my limit unless theyre REALLY good for my specific needs.

Source - LG phone, MP3 player, Desktop Computer, Laptop

Isolation - Preferably yes, if it can block out most things id be happy. I plan to use them at home, and if i can on the bus, public, but not much or nothing extreme like working out or running. My house however has a lot of sounds going on around it.

Preferred type of headphone - Full size, but I'm ok if they aren't, i am however looking for one with a mic or where i can attach a mic. If it doesn't have one well ill just need to find a mic as well.

Tonal balance - Honestly, I don't know, I love bass, but sometimes in certain things bass is too much and prefer balance or where i can hear all instruments.

Past Headphones - Philips SHE3590BK/10 (15 dollar), Creative Fatal1ty(got em when I just didn't care but now I do)

Music type - I like any kind, ranging from Rap, Metal, alternative, Pop, Dubstep, Trap, grunge, electric to Classical, smooth jazz, Big Band, Instrumental, Orchestral, Swing, Ska. I dont discriminate. But I do like listening to every instrument in a song, and i love a good bass.

Location just in case: Cali.

Prefer not to buy a AMP/Dac, at the moment money is tight.

I need headphones that are good for gaming/listening to the music i posted/movies, action, thrillers, horror, etc.
I know its a lot so its hard to pinpoint a tone as well as me being very inexperienced in Audio.

I also wear glasses, so some may not be too good for me and I might use them for long sessions.

Based on links provided by this sub and my own research here are some I've been looking at and have my interest with reasons as to why(based on just reviews and that guide and personal):

u/Iceblack88 · 3 pointsr/GameDeals

Alright, here are my two options:

  1. The Audio Technica ATH-AD700X are my current headphones. They're $100 but they're worth every god damn penny. Gaming feels you're there, music feels like you're in the band. They won't sound much better than regular headphones if you connect them to a cell phone but if you use them at your computer then you will be surprised.

  2. I ALWAYS recommend headphone amps since I started experimenting with them. But they're not cheap at all, they are the same or even more expensive than the headphones themselves. Here's a good combo though: The AKG K 240 are just cheap enough that won't hurt but also good company enough to trust them. They're semi-open so they won't be as situational as the Audio Technica would but the sound stage is still good (Sound stage means when you can tell where a sound "comes" from. Like hearing a bullet or explosion to your left, of actually hearing the guitar on the front and the bass to the back of the track). If you do get these then I'd recommend one of the cheapest headphone amps the FiiO-A1.

I'd obviously recommend you spend a little more to get the Audio Technica AND the amp, but I understand if you don't want to spend that much.
u/Voyevoda101 · 3 pointsr/oculus

Hey OP, I had this question a few days ago and asked someone who sounded like they knew what they were talking about. Here you go.

I ended up going with the Senn HD650s (though I havn't purchased them yet) which are far above your price range. Looking at buying guides and such from /r/headphones, I'd say you'll want this $150 pair from Audio Technica if you can dig up the extra cash. If not, then you'll have to look around.

Since you said gaming and classical music, you'd want to stay away from "bassy" headphones. Open ear would be preferred for the soundstage (compliments both classical music and gaming extremely well). Good luck.

u/ScaryColors · 3 pointsr/buildapcsales

It depends on what you need- but if you play games where directional sound is important, AD700x headphones would be a phenomenal upgrade in sound quality to Astros. Then, after you get those, you can determine whether or not you want/need the soundcard. This soundcard does have a decent chip-amp (which IIRC is fairly neutral) if you can't achieve the volume you want, and the Creative software can do sound-shaping to help with surround sound in games, but you might not even feel that you need it after upgrading your headphones.

Fuller, rich sound- you'd probably want a desktop amp/dac stack
Less noise- not sure what you mean but if you have static on the line coming of the mobo or the Astros aren't EF shielded properly that could be the main issue

Edit- and then, if you use mic communication in game, you would need to add a mic to your setup, but it's well worth it

How heavy are them? because one complaint i had on the g533 was they would hurt the top of my head after a while, its why i bought these https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009S332TQ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

but now I miss the wireless part of the g533 and ordered these hyper x

Combine this with that

well These would be a brilliant option. they are ADG1's without the mic for $140 less

u/redghotiblueghoti · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

As long as sound isolation isn't a big deal, I highly recommend getting some good open-backed headphones like the ATH-AD700x or for a little more go with the ATH-AD900X for a slightly better all around listening experience and the Antlion Modmic 4.0. For closed back design i would recommend the Beyerdynamic DT770, they have amazing sound, if you don't have a DAC and amp then you are going to want the 32 Ohm version.

u/LordZelgadis · 2 pointsr/PS4Deals

In terms of comfort, they barely fit my ears and mine are proportionally sized to my over 6' tall body. They also make my ears sweat. They're okay but you can find other brands that are similar for a little less.

I'll save the story of my adventure in headphones and just say the ATH-AD700X are probably my personal pick for headphones for people with big ears but I've heard pretty much any of the Audiotechnica headphones are about the same comfort.

https://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-AD700X-Audiophile-Open-Air-Headphones/dp/B009S332TQ

I bought the ATH-AD700 (no longer sold) for their accurate sound quality and high quality comfort. They're not exactly portable, so I don't get to wear them as much as I'd like to but they've been my favorite headphones for a decade now. I spent a stupid amount of time reading head-fi.org forum threads about headphone recommendations before picking the ATH-AD700 out and they did not lie about the pros and cons related to them.

My second choice but I never bought them because of price were the DT 990 headphones. I knew I'd have to buy an amp for them and the price isn't exactly cheap either.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00193FT26/?coliid=I2F1YZCSXF66N7&colid=1BOTIPM7PEEBD&psc=0

Of course, their cheaper line, the DT 770, is probably just about as good and don't require such a powerful amp.

https://www.amazon.com/beyerdynamic-770-PRO-Studio-Headphone/dp/B0016MNAAI

If you're looking for something cheaper with a mic attached, try the HyperX Cloud Stinger.

https://www.amazon.com/HyperX-Cloud-Stinger-Core-Playstation/dp/B07BB3PYD8

Alternatively, just google "headsets for big ears" and see what looks good to you. This list actually seems to do a decent job explaining the advantages from a gamer perspective.

If you're looking for a headphone that you're primarily going to use to game with, I suggest looking into open-back headphones.

Assuming you DO need a mic:

Philips SHP9500 + V-Moda BoomPro

Assuming you DON'T need a mic:

Audio Technica ATH-AD700X

Though these are above your price range, do keep an eye on them. Black Friday is near, so a few are bound to drop around the 100$ range.

Sennheiser HD558

Sennheiser HD598

Keep in mind that if you can always attach a ModMic to virtually any headphone you buy. So if you decide to not go with the SHP9500, this could be your next investment.

u/EroticHeartAttack · 2 pointsr/GlobalOffensive

Your Budget is too low for "good headphones." My recommendation would be to see if you can find used Sennheiser HD 598's on ebay or amazon, there might be some in your range. That being said, the sound in CS:GO is complete aids, I have a fairly high end audio setup, analog amps and a nice DAC with hifiman 400's and it doesn't sound any better or give me any kind of advantage over my GF's $40 gaming headset. If you also want to listen to music and or you want generally nice headphones see if you can find those HD 598's used or maybe some audiotechnica ATH-AD700X's used or cheap on amazon. If you just want to play, literally any old headset will do.

Edit: https://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-AD700X-Audiophile-Headphones/dp/B009S332TQ/ref=sr_1_10?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1480526181&sr=1-10&keywords=audio+technica

didn't realize how cheap these are right now, try these ^^ Great high end treble that will help make out footsteps.

u/mrbaritonefreak · 2 pointsr/lapfoxtrax

I'm not a total expert but this is what I would recommend.

Headphones:

Cheap and good for noisy-ish environments - Status audio CB-1 $79

If you live in a noisy environment, These will give you the best reaults. A lot of getting the most our of this album is isolation. Direct Sound EX-29 $107

Super good closed backed headphones, but impedance is very high - Beyerdynamic DT-770 Pro $160

Very good open backed headphones, impedance is relatively low -

Audio Technica ATH-AD700x $109

Super good open backed headphones, but they have a very high impedance - Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro $179

Amps/DACS:

Honestly this is where I personally would spend most of your money, any really good pair of open backed headphones are going to make albums like phwoa sound amazing with the wide sounds stage but a good amp and DAC will make a world of difference. For the price the Mayflower electronics Objective2 is best bang for your buck. I' don't have a ton of experience with amps and DACs but the O2 is properly good, and for $250 you can't go wrong.

Other than that you could look into a tube style Amp but you'd need a separate DAC in most cases plus I personally don't find the tube amps to be a whole lot better unless you spend a shit ton of money on them. They do look cool as balls though.

Favorite setup: California Headphone Co. Silverdos  or Audio Technica with my LG V20 and its beastly DAC and equalizer tuning. Although I wouldn't recommend the California headphones because I personally only paid $15 for them and $200 seems a bit steep for them tbh.

Note: I've owned or at least tried everything I've listed except the CB-1 but I've heard from a lot of well respected sourced that they are pretty damn good especially for under $100

u/BlubBlimp · 2 pointsr/audiophile

I am not sure what headphones to get right now for more casual listening . I have a budget of ~$100 and already have a dragonfly red amp and a pair of ATH-m50x. The headphones I am looking at are:

V Moda Crossfade Wireless

Sennheiser HD 599 SE

Audio-Technica ATH-AD700X

Philips Fidelio X2HR

u/Jugerknot101 · 2 pointsr/buildapc

What are you looking to do with these? Would you be carrying them around with you or would they stay with your PC?
If they are to stay at home, I suggest these. They are open back so the soundstage is amazing. I have the model above them (ATH-AD900X) and they sound incredible.
If you're wanting to carry them around, I recommend these. I use these when I go on road trips and they are also very good for the price. Both Audio-Technica and Klipsch are very good brands with deep experience.

u/burninpanda · 2 pointsr/Vive

have ATH-M50x's but don't like them for VR. The clamping pressure is too great (a problem a lot of closed headphones have) and the vinyl gets uncomfortable and hot. I prefer AudioTechnica ADX900's - have lots of other headphones but default to these even for day to day listening (have 2 pairs). Because the pads are wider they don't slip off but instead cup around your ears.

ADX700's are similar but cheaper. https://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-AD700X-Audiophile-Headphones/dp/B009S332TQ/ref=sr_1_sc_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1482991466&sr=8-1-spell&keywords=audio+technica+adx+700

u/kubbiember · 2 pointsr/buildapcsales

for the price, sure. One of the most respected headsets in gaming (that doesn't have a mic) would be the nearly 10x as expensive ATH-AD700X which are open-back or it's closed-back cousin (don't let the naming fool you... they're very similar) the ATH-A550Z

u/Gargarlord · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

Wow, that is an expensive link to that microphone. Here is another link that saves you about $50 for the same product.

Also, for headphones, the Audio-Technica ATH-AD700X are amazing headphones for gaming as well.

Edit: Nevermind, that is the XLR version of that microphone. It's not very useful to us PC gamers.

u/zwck · 2 pointsr/GlobalOffensive

buy a good pair of headphones. Personally i like open over the ear headphones.

http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-AD700X-Audiophile-Headphones/dp/B009S332TQ

u/[deleted] · 2 pointsr/piano

Here's my two cents: all six options are really good, none of them are amazing. They're all very similar with weighted keys and great sound. If you want better sound, most of them can be used with headphones (usually with a quarter inch jack adapter, which most nice headphones come with).

I play a Yamaha P-125 and love it. The built-in speakers are fine, but the sound quality jumps to amazing when I plug in my headphones (which cost less than $100 US) or better speakers.

Don't overthink it. Anyone who isn't a professional should be more than happy with any of these options. And if your son develops a deep passion for piano after a few years, then maybe look into a higher-tier digital piano for him. But seriously, it's all good.

As for question #4, how hard it is to press a key is called weight or action. Cheap keyboards have no action, and press with little to no effort. This is unpleasant, and will make playing on keyboards with action an exercise in frustration. But all the options you listed have good action. Some have more than others, but that's really a matter of preference, and the difference between them shouldn't be too significant to anyone who isn't doing a side-by-side comparison among them.

EDIT: for context, of the digital pianos you listed, I personally like Roland > Yamaha > Casio, and I've never tried the Kawai.

EDIT #2: grammar!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

u/NFG89 · 2 pointsr/headphones

http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-AD700X-Audiophile-Open-Air-Headphones/dp/B009S332TQ

I have never heard these before but from what the frequency response charts show they do boost up the bass end a little. They are also more expensive.

As for modding the pads, you can try them out with the original pads first, or mod them later on. I use alpha pads on my a900x and moved my a900x pleather pads onto my ad700. Denon pads will fit as well.

u/bdcblue · 2 pointsr/headphones

The Audio-Technica AD700 are legendary for gaming and they sound pretty good too. On the other hand, you may not want them because they do lack in bass. However, having a lot of bass in games is harmful because it tends to wash out the nuances that gamers want/need. The bass of explosions will wash out the subtle footsteps of an enemy approaching from your rear. This is why these headphones are considered top of the line for gamers.

There is a newer model that retains this sound signature, and sounds absolutely beautiful. It has a very sparkly treble and is great for games.

If you really need the added bass, I would go with the Sennheiser HD 558 which will deliver the bass response that you are looking for. However, the soundstage will be slightly decreased from the AD700 because, in my opinion, these are not a truly open headphone. Inside each ear cup, there is a piece of foam tape stuck to the mesh. If you open up the headphone and remove this foam tape, you can achieve a similar sound stage to the AD700 but with additional bass response. The HD 558 is also great for watching movies, better than the AD700, imo.

None of these headphones require an amp, but they all scale up with an am

u/ohnodrim · 2 pointsr/headphones

So I'm finally gonna replace my Skullcandy Slyr gaming headset with some real headphones!

After doing a bunch of research I've narrowed my decision down to two choices: the ATH-AD700x and AKG K612PRO.

While I like the look and better build quality of the AKG's, I haven't heard as much about them as far as sound quality (meanwhile hearing nothing but good things about the 700x's soundstage and clarity). As much as I do love me some bass (and pretty things), I do a lot of competitive gaming, so being able to place sounds/direction is really important. Thoughts/recommendations?

u/Chaos_Out · 2 pointsr/SiegeAcademy

Audio-Technica ATH-AD700X... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B009S332TQ?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

Have had these for about 2-3 weeks now. These are probably the best or one of the best for hearing footsteps (open back headsets) and they're about $100 cheaper than the hd 599 or dt 990.

I pretty much bought the 3 suggested items that Amazon recommends, headphones with modmic 5 and the e10k dac and it's great. Headband is weird but it's been fine for me and very comfortable wearing for multiple hours, no issues of falling/sliding for me, but everyone's head is different.. Mic sounds great, and the dac is good for me since I can really crank up the volume and power headphones to fullest potential (I leave the dac around 5 I think), but, depending on your mobo, you might not need it for these. These do lack in bass some, hence why so good for footsteps, but the dac has a bass boost switch on the front that I use when listening to music and its sounds great.

I was using a logitech 930 and wanted a wired (had a lot of disconnects when gaming) quality headset specifically for r6. Super happy with these. A lot of the reviews specifically mention fps or even r6 as their usage too.

u/Stylomax · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

Personally I'm a fan of using a quality headset and attaching a ModMic to it. So bearing that in mind I would suggest one of the following:

  • Sennheiser HD 598c One very nice closed back headset

  • Audio Technica ATH-AD700X One of my favorite headsets, even better if you can get the original non X version as I consider the drivers to be even better. These are a nice set of open circumaural headphones

  • Beyerdynamic DT-770 Pro Another good closed set of headphones, be aware these are higher impedance headphones so you may want to look for the lower impedance 32ohm version if you're not sure if your sound card can drive them properly
u/redautumnleaves · 2 pointsr/SiegeAcademy

I recommend giving low-end audiophile-quality headphones a try, with a low-cost separate mic.

Madlustenvy's guide (https://www.head-fi.org/threads/mad-lust-envys-headphone-gaming-guide-5-6-2019-hifiman-ananda-added.534479/) is a great resource for folks getting more interested in gaining a competitive edge in gaming via sound.

u/officer21 · 2 pointsr/buildapcsales

These have a big soundstage for gaming, are over ear and open back so your ears won't touch anything or get warm, and are fairly priced for what they are. They don't have much bass so they aren't great for that kind of music, but for just gaming they are great.

These are a little more expensive, but will sound great for music and gaming, and are overear openback as well. These are a great all-in-one comfortable headphone

u/PsiSpirit · 2 pointsr/BuyItForLife

https://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-AD700X-Audiophile-Open-Air-Headphones/dp/B009S332TQ

That's the pair I use when gaming. Great soundstage so when gaming or listening to movies or music, it sounds like you're in the middle of everything and you can clearly hear where every noise is in reference to you.

-Bass isn't super strong (by no means weak either) but that's generally what happens with open ear headphones.

-They're borderline stupidly comfortable.

-I've had mine for around 3 years now and they're holding up great.

If you want pictures of how they've held up after these years, let me know!

u/kiwiandapple · 2 pointsr/GlobalOffensive

You see the professional players use them because they are sponsored. They don't care to wear anything as long as they can play this game and get a salary out of it.

The HyperX Clouds are pretty decent for what you get. But by no means spectacular.
I doubt that you can beat them when you have to include a microphone though.

Here is a list of headphones that are amazing for the price.

so prices for the naga on pcpartpicker are kind of fucked so i went and looked on amazon and found this

though personally I would give preference to this which will better match the keyboard as well. I don't know if your friend is open to alternatives to the Naga, but it is definitely not the only option for an RGB mouse with macro-keys.

I made sure the case has blue lighting by default, but you could also look into a custom LED strip in the case, which if you do it right will probably look better.

As for the build itself, this will handle any modern title with ease on 1080p ultra settings, while recording or streaming.

I don't know if your friend already has his audio gear (headphones and mic) but if he doesn't my suggestion would be a blue snowball mic and the ath-ad700x which if you ship them from japan (top option in the link) ends up cheaper than the 500x which is a lower tier model.

Very comfortable. Other earbuds would lead to discomfort, but these have been nice.

Unsure how well it works with a PC, it use's one three-pole TRSS connection (2.5mm jack with 3 rings on it; rings for left channel, right channel, mic, so if PC port isn't 3-pole mic input might not be applied.)

Alternatively, one can look for clip-on microphones that plug into the microphone port and attach them to some comfortable headphones or earbuds.

Not the best noise isolation though - the price to pay for comfort I guess.

for clip-on mics you might want to search for one that does a better job with noise cancellations. I'm recalling the zalman will pickup stuff like keyboard typing. I had to alter gain and other stuff to get it calibrated.

There is a less expensive AD500 model as well. I like the Audiotechnica's because they're quite comfortable. However, I know this isn't exactly the typical 'headset+mic' combo that get's used in sales. I got this equipment for video gaming, back when I still could do that years ago.

u/fleberto · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

If you want a straight up "gaming" headset, the HyperX Cloud is (in my opinion) the only option. However, you could get yourself some legitimate headphones like this and just slap one of these on there. I would recommend the latter option. You wouldn't need a DAC or amp for these headphones, as onboard audio is just fine.

u/mrselkies · 2 pointsr/buildapc

/u/Beigesian is correct - although they don't sell these anymore as far as I know. They came out with a new model.

u/tiggyspawn · 2 pointsr/headphones

I have a pretty big head, and have been happy with the ATH-AD700x for ages!

They're almost BETTER with a big head! :D

u/aprivilegedwhiteboy · 2 pointsr/buildapcsales

I was lucky enough to find the 700x on sale for 85$ and then picked up the Yeti/Watch dogs 2 for like 100$ and sold the game for 20$. 160$ if you dont mind looking for a deal and I must say, these are the ones I use the most. We both have a few budget headphone/mic combos actually and my girl uses the SHP9500/M50x with blue snowball. So you could even get both an open AND a set of closed AND have a better mic than whatever is attached to these. She uses the closed to listen to music/movies and the opens for gaming. Loves it.

I added the links for the deals we got and honestly, both our setups sound amazing and are cheaper. Gaming headsets as a whole are kind of over priced for what they are. Not sure what it is about that.

EDIT: Oh and the snowball alone is only 50$.

u/NeverEndingXsin · 2 pointsr/Rainbow6

You're a godsend, thank you so much for the response :) I decided to look more into getting a separate headset and mic because it'll be better in the long run. And the reviews on those are pretty damn good.

Music definitely won't be an issue as I only use my PC for gaming, but I was looking at the upgraded version of the one I linked and it's $40 more but a lot better.

Gaming headphones are a pretty weird market. None of them are actually that good for anything but games, and other headphones can usually do games better. Instead of buying a gaming headset, It's better to buy a less expensive pair of headphones that preform better and add a mic. Gaming headsets may have all sorts of cool features, but you'll find that you don't really need them once you don't have them. The most important thing for gaming headphones isn't preset EQs or bass response, it's all about having a positively massive soundstage. That's how you can get your system sounding something like a surround sound setup (although headphones just can't do the same things that speakers can at any price range). Depening on your price range, you could get the Sennheiser HD558, the Audio Techinca AD700X, the AKG Q701, or the Philips Fildelio X1. As for mics, you can get the Zalman ZM1 clip on mic, or the Antlion Modmic, if you're a fan of boom mics and quality. On top of being able to play games with them, you'll also be able to listen to your music collection rather comfortably, which is the main place where gaming headsets fall short, as they're equalized and tuned specifically for games.

I'm sorry to do a huge info dump on you, but getting a nice sounding pair of headphones doesn't just improve your games and music, it improves your life :) Eventually, you'll be more comfortable wearing them than not.

Whichever way you go, though, I hope you enjoy whatever you buy to the fullest, and most importantly, enjoy Destiny's phenominal sound design with your headphones! And if you need more suggestions, I'd be happy to help!

I'm here looking for advice so take anything I say with a grain of salt. But I am heavily considering these headphones. https://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-AD700X-Audiophile-Headphones/dp/B009S332TQ

They are $93 USD so that would be ~70 pounds and would leave about 10 to get a clip on mic. They are open ear and a little light on the bass but apparently give extremely clear feedback as far as footsteps in CS:GO go.

I am heavily considering them myself.

u/yazawone · 2 pointsr/GlobalOffensive

u/Anergos · 2 pointsr/buildapc

I'd get the Audio-Technica ATH AD700X ($100) + a mic like the antlion modmic ($55).

You can cheapen out on the mic and get something lesser (like the Zalman Zm-Mic1 ) if you don't care that much about it. Though fair warning, mics like the zalman really depend on the placement.

shame its over your price range, i'm unfamiliar with prices in cad. have you tried amazon however? here in Australia a pair of AD900x is $300AUD. After currency conversion i got my pair for $170 with shipping included. the 900x is the model above the 700x and mostly just improves the low end (and some people like the 700x for gaming more, but i'm a sucker for expensive models). http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B009S332TQ/ref=dp_olp_new?ie=UTF8&condition=new

Hey everyone :)

When it comes to music, I am a newbie. I've only been interested in music for the past few years. I am unsure if I should save up for a bigger budget, or if I should upgrade what I have right now.
I have a pair of Ipod ear headphone for when I go out, so I'm mainly looking for something that I can use home. Some people recommended http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B009S332TQ/ref=pe_1106570_129969380_pe_epc__1p_3_ti.
It's 171$ on Amazon.ca. A little over budget.

Budget around 100-150$

You could go for a pair of AD500X's with a mic, but if you can afford, then the AD700x's are a bit of a jump in sound quality. These are both open headphones, you'll be getting much a better sound stage than any headset on the market.

I've had my beyerdynamic DT-770 Pro 80ohm for more than two years now. I have enjoyed them very much but I would like to try out a new pair of headphones with a totally different sound.

I'm also looking for an inexpensive amp (under $50) to use at home because the 770s can be too quiet sometimes.

Budget $130, but flexible.

Isolation Don't really care, I'm using these alone.

Music Pop, Rock, Alternative, Ambient, Soundtracks

Headphones I am looking at

Ultrasone HFI-15G I'd like to try on-the-ear and like the smaller/lighter design.

Reasonably priced could mean different things to me and you but AT AD700s are always recommended from people in the know although I don't find the "winged" headband design to be super comfortable. And I can personally say that HD558s are great.

How much worse are the AD 500x's? They are quite a bit cheaper and I'd like to save some money if the upgrade isn't worth double the price.

Ok so do you think with open headphones, like these, I would be able to hear myself speak at least? My wife keeps on getting angry with me talking loudly when I have a game going with my headsets. So I need something to where I can hear myself at least and not shout.

u/Geneaux · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

I can't speak for you, but I could only go by what see in the pic. Personally, I only own Zeros. Though I did used to own PC360s(closed-back) which the Ones bare the most similarity to.

However, with the latter being open-back, makes them seem odd to me. They don't look very open at all, at least compared to Audio Techincas for example.

Budget: ~$150 total

I'm new to all this and I want to ditch my headset. That means I'm looking for headphones + a ModMic. Thanks to the resources on this subreddit, I've narrowed my headphone choices down to the Audio Technica ATH-AD700X and the AKG K 240.

For someone who does equal amounts of gaming, music listening, and movie watching, which one would be the better option? My priorities are comfort, clarity of sound and immersion.

u/SpamShadow · 1 pointr/headphones

The ATH-AD700x is often held up as one of the best gaming headphones. I've demoed the AD500x and it was impressive, especially for the price. Obviously not a headset, you'd need to get a modmic or some kind of external solution to go with it.

u/URASucKaFisH · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

This isn't entirely accurate. Headphones can play a huge factor in sound imaging. Some are for sure better than others. Software does come into play, but IMO you would want to look for headphones that have great imaging, as well as sound stage, for accuracy. For a cheaper headphone that has some of the best imaging and sound stage you can get, albeit lacking punchy bass, the Audio Technica ATH-AD700X's are phenomenal for the price.

EDIT: I didn't really mention prices because I'm from the UK and pricing over here is weird, some things are a lot more expensive here than they would be in the US for example.

Good heaphones generally aren't also affordable. For headsets I'd say the best headset as in, also with a mic attached, the Sennheiser PC360s are probably the best I have used. I don't think I've ever heard a headset that is has as clear directional cues and with such a large soundstage. It's pretty well balanced too so nothing is too overbearing, as an example I used to have Turtle Beach....

I forget which ones exactly, I think X11s? Those had really, really overbearing treble and made every sound like it was in a tin can. That's great for picking out the higher pitched footsteps in a game like CoD. Bad for movies and music though. I assume the newer versions are better in that regard because it was a pretty common complaint.

Anyway, the Senns also have pretty decent front and back positional cues, which isn't something you really find too often. It's definitely the hardest part of directional cues to nail down. They are super clear as well, if I'm listening to something like a live recording of an orchestra, it's really easy to pick out the location of each instrument (assuming the room acoustics are okay) and tell them apart rather than them kind of blending too much.

The only complaint I have about them is that the bass isn't really too punchy (which I like) due to the open back nature and their focus on a balanced audio spectrum. Still by far the best headset I have ever used.

-

If you want something specifically for FPS these are pretty amazing. They don't come with a mic so you'd have to buy a clip-on mic or something but those are fairly cheap and it's nice to be able to take it off when you don't need it.

The highs are nice and pronounced, and mids on these from what I remember (I never owned them, used at a friend's place for a few days at a LAN) have excellent detail to them. The soundstage is huge too (in Dolby Headphone mode) which is great because obviously a bigger soundstage makes it easier to discern the direction of audio.

I wouldn't recommend them for anything other than tryhard FPS though, the bass is honestly not good at all, so it isn't going to be good for movies or music, and because of the focus on the higher end, they sound... Nothing will sound 'real' through these. They definitely aren't good for immersive audio.

Since I'm pretty tired and don't want to write any more I would say check out this buyer's guide from /r/headphones. Specifically I can recommend the Audio Technica M50Xs. They are really popular. I've never personally used them but I don't think I've ever heard anyone have much to say negatively about them. They might require a bit of an amp though so if you don't already have a headphone amp they might not sound as good as they potentially can. Also, they are apparently a little bassy, so if soundwhoring is what you're after they might not be perfect for that. Also, closed back, so they will have a tighter soundstage but from everything I've heard about them, they still sound great. Some people even prefer the sound of closed back headphones, I don't personally, but audio is a fairly subjective thing at the end of the day. What I used to do was order headphones from Amazon, try them out for a day or so, then return them and rinse and repeat. Not sure if Amazon would still allow you to return as often as I did these days but it's possibly an option. If it is possible to try out headphones before committing I'd definitely say you should.

Just looking for some feed back as both of these are on sale and I am in the market for some new headphones (mainly for gaming on my PC).

ATHADG1

ATH-AD700x

I believe that the ATHADG1 are just a pair of AD900x with a mic slapped on? So in theory should be better but have been finding less than stellar reviews for the ATHADG1. I was initially planning to get a pair of ATH-M50 as were on sale at a local store but didn't have any stock.

My back up plan is to just get a pair of say Logitech G230 for the time being as my Razer Carcharias are currently failing. Any other suggestions would certainly be appreciated. Am neutral on closed/open back and they wouldn't need to be portable, though comfort is a key concern for lengthy use and I have a big head.

u/asdf4455 · 1 pointr/headphones

Well since the Roccat you had before was worth $150, I'll use that as a baseline. If you're willing to spend the same amount for only headphones, I'd say go with the Audio Technica ATH-AD900X. If you want to get a mic with it, get this Sony ECMCS3. if you wanna save some cash, you can go with the AD700X or AD500X and buy the sony mic i linked. Another alternative is the Philips SHP9500 (which is what I use for gaming) with a V-Moda Boom Pro Gaming Mic. if you also wanna step up your microphone game, you can also get a ATR2100. I say that mic and not a blue yeti or snowball because the 2100 is a dynamic mic, which means it doesn't pick up a lot of background noise. This is useful since the AD series and the SHP9500 are all open back headphones so the sound leaks out. this is great for gaming though, since it provides a wider sound stage and helps with positioning in games.

-Why are you buying the HTC Vive over the Oculus Rift?

Not buying it over the Rift, I have already ordered both

-What is your favourite feature(s) in the HTC Vive that may not be present/as prominent in the Oculus Rift?

included controllers

-What do you think of HTC and Valve as companies? Do you prefer them over Oculus/Facebook, and why?

all are great as far as companies go.

-What (if anything) do you wish that the HTC Vive had that may be missing from the HMD at launch?

Built in headphones. Not having this almost made me not order it. My max went from $999 to $800 when I found out that there were no headphones. I still ended up ordering and bought some decent headphones that are suppose to have a similar audio profile to the included ones on the Rift.

-What game(s) are you most excited to play on the HTC Vive?

Tilt Brush, Hover Junkers, Windlands, Arizona sunshine

I personally don't find Sennheiser headphones to be comfortable (though haven't tried the HD800). I find the pads too thin and narrow for the amount of clamp they have but with that said many people still find them to be comfortable, some people think they're the most comfortable pair of headphones they've worn, it's all about how it fits your specific head and what you find comfortable. I find the LCD series headphones to be extremely comfortable but many others find them to be far too large and heavy, subjectivity is a large thing here. People have different tastes both by preference and physical design with comfort just as they do with sound.

If you don't find them comfortable then you don't find them comfortable. You can try loosening the clamp like others have stated or just get a different pair of headphones. You can try the Audio Technica ATH-AD700X or the AKG K 240 MKII which I'd personally recommend over any gaming headset as gaming headsets have a notoriously bad sound quality to price ratio with the exception of the HyperX Cloud series, because they are literally studio headphones with a mic slapped on them. Do these look familiar?

u/shanx057 · 1 pointr/HeadphoneAdvice

I would split your budget to get two headphones for dedicated use.

  1. a. Gaming Headphone => Since you mainly listed FPS titles that require you to pin point footsteps and shots, I would recommend the Audio Technica ATH AD 700x (AD700x Amazon Link) for $92. These headphones are well respected and loved for FPS titles with the same requirements as yours. They don't need an amp and can be driven from your motherboard with ease.
    b. Gaming microphone => Get the ModMic 4.0 (ModMic 4.0 Amazon Link) for $50. These are great and can be driven using your motherboard. However I would suggest pairing them with something like this (USB Sound Card Amazon Link) for best results - add another $15 for this.

  2. Music and movies headphone => Get something like the HD 599 (HD 599 Amazon Link) from Sennheiser if you want good balanced sound without breaking the bank. They are easy to drive using your mobo and if you get an amp down the line they will increase the volume of these headphones. These cans are like $149 now.

So you will be spending $157 for the gaming headphone and mic and $148 for the music/movies headphone. I know this has a huge drawback of switching headphones when you want to do either, but you can also use the HD 599 for gaming as it has good imaging. The sound stage is not as wide as the AD700x but it is still good enough for positioning shots. However this will give you the (relatively) best of both worlds for your budget. :)
u/Jawntily · 1 pointr/audio

Get a good solid regular headphone without an attached mic, plus the blue yeti nano. I went ahead and checked to see if you could plug earbuds or headphones into it and the answer is yes you can. There is an audio Jack on the bottom of the mic.

As for feeling claustrophobic when wearing headphones, have you tried wearing open back headphones? They let the sound travel outward a little (nowhere near as loudly as speakers so your mic wont pick up the sound unless you are BLASTING your game sounds).

There are quite a few options for headphones that are open back and cheap. The reason they are called open back headphones is because the earcups are not closed off to keep the sound just in your ears. And you might ask me "what's the point of wearing headphones if the sound is allowed to leak out?" And the reasons are: comfort, sound quality, and temperature control. They are lightweight which makes them easier to wear, they dont give you that closed in feeling, and they let your ears breathe and prevent sweating.

Some good cheap options are the Phillip's shp9500
Philips SHP9500 HiFi Precision Stereo Over-ear Headphones (Black) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ENMK1DW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_7G64Cb4F3GYG8

Or the sennheiser HD 559
Sennheiser HD 559 Open Back Headphone https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01L1IIEKM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_nI64Cb5G6KGKS

Audio-Technica ATHAD700X Audiophile Open Air Dynamic Headphones https://www.amazon.com/dp/B009S332TQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_iJ64CbA4ZQ3F1

All of these would be great, but something to keep in mind is these headphones wont have quite as much bass as a closed back headphone. It's still there, just not as much. So if you listen to very bass heavy music, you might wanna swap to your speakers for that.

I think Zeos preferred the M40's. I preferred these for $100. The soundstage is unbeatable(if you play games, this will help you pinpoint sounds like footsteps or gunfire), they sound lovely, and the cable is actually really really strong so the fact that it's not detachable isn't a problem.

In my opinion, there is not best pair of headphones, at any price range. Ideally you'd find a shop that you could visit and audition several headphone models, from different brands.

Now, for gaming I like to use open headphones, so that's what I'm going to recommend. I'm going to assume that you'll connect the headphones directly to your PC. And you mentioned that you want the headphones to be comfortable while wearing glasses.

With that in mind, I'd recommend you try to audition the Audio Technica ATH-AD700X and see how you like them. If that's not possible, they're $102 on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-AD700X-Audiophile-Headphones/dp/B009S332TQ/

Headphones I've used the past 10 years.

  • ATH-AD700 - Discontinued now, but cheap used, open back, under $50, one of the biggest soundstage, but lacks bass
  • ATH-AD700X - updated revision of the ad700, under $100 on sale, tiny bit better bass. The stock pad made my ears sore since it touches the driver. I replaced it with memoryfoam BrainWavz pad, and they feel much better. Puts less pressure on my eyeglasses too.
  • ATH-M50X - My go-to music headphone, but I use it for travel gaming too since they fold up nicely and closeback for noise isolation.
  • ATH-AD900X - Better version of AD700X
  • Philips Fidelio X2 - About $200 on sale, a little bit less soundstage than AD700X, but much better bass. If you can splurge, I highly recommend this. They are balanced type headphones. Basically replaced the the M50X for music listening and AD700X/AD900X for gaming. It feels really nice, pad fits much better than the AD700X. I forget I am actually wearing headphones. If this is too expensive, SHP9500, is a cheaper alternative at 1/3 the cost.
  • All of the headphones listed above are low impedance meaning you don't need an amp to get good sound output.
  • Most gaming specific headphones aren't that good for the price. You're paying mostly for the marketing. Get any decent audiophile headphone and it will be much better.

    Virtual surround sound I've used

  • Xonar U3 - Got this to replace my broken mobo sound, but found out it does virtual surround sound. Basically simulates 5.1/7.1 sound on a 2 channel headphone. Used it for many years gaming. Sounds awesome with good headphone that has big soundstage. Nice to hear directional audio to know here footsteps are at in games. Also acts like an amp with boost mode for high impedance headphones.
  • Razer Surround Sound - free, but the worst virtual surround sound I've heard. Things sound muffled.
  • Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi - Upgraded to this, it has better virtual surround sound technology.

    Hate wired headphone?

  • How to convert wired phones into wireless gaming one

  • ModMic - Used this for many many years, but got tired of wires dangling around
  • Blue Yeti - Audio quality is so much better than the modmic, but it is big. Use a mic stand or arm.

I like big round ear cups that rest on my head. Otherwise they press on my cartilage rings and make my ears hurt. Narrow ear cups and on-ear cups are hell.

I'm currently using Audio Technica ATH-AD700X at my PC. They're great, though the split headband thing is kind of weird. I ended up tying the two ends together with a velcro cable strap.

> I really want to get a headset for the Xbox One that supports surround sound.

This is my scolding. Surround sound can only be surround when it is set up to be surround. Multiple speakers one inch away from your ear is not a surround setup and will not create surround, audio-postprocessing softwares does it - by changing the sound patterns from different directions, to simulate it.

Surround headsets seem to go for $160+ on Amazon. With that budget you can get something wayyy better.

I was one step away from pulling the trigger on some Logitech G933's before I discovered this subreddit. I already have a separate mic but would prefer to have a build in mic and the convenience of wireless appealed to me. After discovering this subreddit I looked through some posts on gaming headphones and two really caught my eye.

  • Audio Technica ATH-AD700X

-Noticed this after reading through Mad Lust Envy's guide to gaming headphones. The original ones reviewed are no longer on sale new and I've heard complaints about build quality and the 3M non detachable cable on the new ones. While it may be possible to modify the cable I'd rather not have to.

  • Sennheiser PC 363D

-I've been looking at these because they come with a very convenient mic as well as an attachable sound card for 7:1 Surround Sound. In terms of getting good positional audio Surround Sound is very appealing, although I may just be buying into the marketing.

While audio quality for things like music and movies is important I am willing to sacrifice all round quality for good positional audio and a wide soundscape. These headphones will be used for fps games like CSGO and Arma 3 and I don't use my headphones for much else. These are pretty popular games so I'm sure that someone helpful on here could share their experiences. Everything I've seen of this community so far makes it out to be really good and I'm looking forwards to learning more. Thank you in advance!

amazing soundstage and that's all you need if you use them for gaming.

u/camicazi · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

OK, I came up with a few suggestions:

$100-150 sennheiser hd558, ath ad700x, akg k612

$150-200 sennheiser hd598,
ath ad900x, akg q701, beyerdynamic dt990

(both akg k612 and beyer requiers an amp, makes the price go up with about $200 if you dont already have an amp), you dont necessarily need an amp for the akg q701, but be ready to crank volumes up to maximum to get a comfortable volume level without an amp, and some people think that the volume is just too low without it.

Should be noted that if you have the cash to go with the beyer, it should perform almost as amazing as the ad900x and q701 with positional sound, but also has among the best bass in the market at sub $500

Open air headphones like these are not "in ear". Are you looking for earbuds (typically what In-Ear Monitors are called)? If you've got a big budget, ask around on /r/headphones.

u/Sprinkles169 · 1 pointr/pcgaming

Well that's a gaming headset and super cheap at that. Here's my combination of headphones and attachable mic.

This is about options though and is technically cheaper. You can use any headphones where you'd be able to stick the mics magnet attachment on the side. Someone also mentioned the V-MODA which is a cheaper attachable mic. A much more fault tolerant setup as well. I don't have to worry about breaking cheaply made plastic and throwing down full price to replace it.

u/jcowl · 1 pointr/headphones

You could try a cheap but good headphone off amazon and return it if you don't enjoy the added detail, accurate soundstage, and overall better sound.

For in ears: RE-400

For around the ears: AD-700 or the newer AD-700X

For around the ears and closed (they isolate at the sacrifice of soundstage): M50

I'd give one of those a shot, see if you enjoy the added quality to your music/games/movies, and if you don't, who cares, amazon has a great return policy.

I've had numerous people tell me that my Audio Technica ATH AD700 headphone are extremely comfortable. I coupled them and a Modmic together to make what I guess you are looking for, sound + voice. The Modmic has fantastic quality and the AD700s sound great, except that they do not have very strong base. They do have a good sound stage meaning that you can determine the direction of a sound quite easily. They no longer produce the original AD 700 that I have, now they are on a new model, the AD 700x. It is pretty much the same, just a different color.

This isn't for headphones, but for a clip on/attachable mic used for gaming. I know technically this isn't the exact subreddit but I didn't know where else to post, and I feel most of you guys would still have some good recommendations.

I (think) I'm looking for a clip on mic. If anyone has any other suggestion which might fit my needs, feel free to suggest something else.

I'm going to be using this mic for gaming. Studio quality is not necessary. I'm looking for a mic to not take up any desk space, so the mic could be clipped on to my headphone wire, or clipped on to my monitor or tower. I've used Zalman clip on mic before, but the clip was too skinny for my headphone wire, and the clip eventually broke from the stress. I use Audio Technica AD700x Headphones.

If this hangs on to my wire, which drops straight down from my headphone cans, will a unidirectional mic catch my voice adequately? I don't want it to catch my TV, which is right next to my set up, nor do I want it to catch my loud PC and clacking keyboard.

With this being said, I'm in the $20 budget range. Cheaper is ok if the quality is there and I don't feel like I will need to replace it in the near future. Willing to go in the $30-$40 range if the quality/build is exceptional and I will not need to replace it in the next ~5-7 years.

Thoughts?

Honestly i wouldn't trust many review sites these days, Most of the time i see any sort of review on any item the person doing the review has no expertise on the subject. Have you seen the Cuphead review? These are the type of people that review products.

As for headphones:

The superlux 668 or the Samson sr850 are very good for their price and will sound just as good and even better than the cloud 2's in some areas.

For ~$100 you can get a pair of ATH-AD700X . They're the best headphones in their price range/price-performance to me. They sound amazing. The ad500x's/ad900x'z are also really good for a little less/more.

Though I'm not sure if the ones used came with a built-in mic or if was an external mic that was attached.

Either way, keep in mind that most higher-end headphones require an amp to obtain decent sound. If you're not using an amp or a soundcard with a built-in amp, you'll get better sound out of mid-range headphones than out of most expensive ones. AudioTechnica headphones are generally pretty well-known for requiring a good amp to be driven properly.

Preferred tonal balance - I don't understand about tonal balance, so I suppose that an overall balanced pair of headphones would suit me best.

Past headphones - Sennheiser HD201. I bought them for 25-30€ 3 years ago and I liked the quality(again, I'm not an expert) but I found them extremely uncomfortable. Over time the pain disappeared but I'm looking for a comfortable pair of headphones now, 60% comfort 40% quality I'd say.

Preferred Music - I listen to a lot of Rock, Metal, and Trance. Sometimes Indie too.

I'll start by saying I'm a total noob in the field. I started by reading this guide from the sidebar and some threads here and I found two interesting headsets: The A-T M50 and The A-T AD700X.

I was looking for very good comfort and overall sound quality. I'm a gamer and I spend all my free time on the PC(6-12 hours each day), that's why comfort is important to me. I play games casually, usually with the in-game music turned off while I listen to electronic music/rock.

Judging by reviews, those 2 headphones are comfortable but they're lacking bass. I don't really understand the concept but I suppose bass is important for my music tastes(rock and electronic music) so I backed out on the purchase due to my ignorance. I resort to you, hoping you could guide me in the right direction.

Thanks in advance!

Not a ton of good choices at that price but here are two to read about that might work for you:

Philips SPH9500

audio technica ATH-AD700X

i have the ath-ad700 and i love these headphones. open back circumaural headphones (over ear). comfortable and light on my head and i can wear them for hours.

soundstage is great though if you use them for music, it's a little lacking in the bass. but i cannot say enough good things about the soundstage. it's about $101 on the link from amazon i posted.

i always recommend these versus any "gaming" headset because of the soundstage and comfort. i got these because of a recommended thread off of head-fi.org from mad lust envy.

here's what he says on the ad700 (the ad700x just being the newer version)

>Spectacular for FPS games. Great detail in the mids and energetic treble. Soundstage is the biggest of any headphone I have heard in Dolby Headphone mode (including the K701). Everything sounds just so crystal clear and sparkly. Directional accuracy is just bloody fantastic (2nd only to the DT770 Pro 80s for me). If you want a headphone that just murders practically everything else for FPS games, the AD700s is that headphone.

he does point out that unless it's for gaming, these aren't worth it since it is so bass light. but for a gaming perspective, i think these are one of the best.

Ones on the left would be better for gaming. Audio Technica ATH-AD700X Audiophile Headphones https://www.amazon.com/dp/B009S332TQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_GRnJAbHN4YGY5

Think about getting a wire headband headphones and a mic. I hated to hear my glasses rub on my old plasticy headset. Not the best example but something like this:

get a nice pair of studio head phones for less and buy a mod mic.

These are my headphones for example ( I did go a little more on the pricey side though but you can find something just as good or better than "gaming headsets" for less):
https://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-AD700X-Audiophile-Headphones/dp/B009S332TQ/ref=sr_1_14?ie=UTF8&qid=1484217515&sr=8-14&keywords=audio+technica

And this is the mod mic:
https://www.amazon.com/Antlion-Audio-ModMic-Attachable-Microphone/dp/B00R98JVVU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1484217546&sr=8-1&keywords=modmic

You get more bang for your buck if you do the research. You can find better sounding headphones for less and the mod mic sounds amazing and clear.

How about these Sennheiser HD 558s or these Audio Technica ATH-AD700X, they're a bit over your budget but they're both great headphones.

I rocked a deathadder 2013 for a while and ran into a same issue with the doubleclciking. For something similar, I would consider going with Zowie, which is owned by BenQ, the monitor company that makes some of the best 144hz panels on the market. With Zowie mice, I use an EC-1A which has a nearly identical shape to that of the deathadder, if you want the transition to be smooth for your muscle memory.

For something less expensive, consult the wiki, or roll with a magicforce 108 (since it seems like you need a 10key at an affordable pricepoint) that just came out. They make great starter mechs and have a ton of entry level switch options. I've been rocking a Magicforce 68 key for the better part of the year and have had zero problems with it yet. (Still working on getting my first "real" mech board put together, heh.)

As for headphones, you'll always be better off rolling with a dedicated set of headphones and a separate mic attachment for the price. For a good use in FPS, I'd recommend the Audio Technica ATH-AD700X paired with an Antlion ModMic for a great entry level headset and mic that will give you better positional awareness because of the soundstage.

Just get a nice pair of studio headphones and a clip on mic or desk mic.

I made the switch a while back from "gaming" headsets and I'll never look back.

Better sound quality for a cheaper price and unless you want studio quality, absolutely perfect mic input, a standard desk mic (I use my webcam mic personally) works just fine.

Edit: these are the pairs I use

Best damn headphones I've ever had. Super comfortable and sound great.

I deleted my comment because it came off as pretty dickish. I can tell the difference between above me and below me perfectly fine with my DT990s and audio settings set to Hi-Fi. I don't know what else to tell you other than suggesting different headphones, because they make a big difference. I'd suggest AD700x, AKG K701, or AKG K702 if you want the best sound localization you can get.

With that said, there is still room for improvement within R6's sound engine.

If you want to go the headphone route, Audio Technicas and Astro's Mixamp Pro.
