If anyone is on the border between a Mac and PC, I definitely recommend against getting Apple laptops until the Macbook Pro next year. Even with this discount.

The keyboards are pretty much ticking time bombs. If any of the keys get dust under them they'll break. Apple has an extended replacement plan on all of the affected models' keyboards (which even includes models from 2019), but once that ends when your keyboard breaks it's an expensive repair. The 2020 models are heavily rumored to have a new keyboard. I have other issues with the current design too, but I think this is the only relevant one for Freshmen.

As far as Beats, if you like the style then they're hard to argue with. But otherwise, keep in mind that you're paying extra for the style and that money would go farther with another brand. Hard to argue with this $160 pair.

No problem at all.

I would say your best bet is probably a pair of Beyerdynamic DT770. V-shaped signature (boosted treble and bass), closed back, powered easily.

Important note! Do not buy the 250ohm model, only the 80ohm or 32ohm--you really want a headphone amp for 250ohms. If you plan on getting an amp or sound card, I'd suggest the 80ohm ones. They will sound fine un-amped but an amp will open them up. They also come with the velour pads which are WAY more comfortable. The 32 ohm version comes with pleather pads.

Another option is the Audio-Technica M50X.
They're also closed back, a little more stylish, less comfortable, but they are folding and have a removable cable. Bass isn't as good as the DT770 but they have better highs.

I would still say for you go with DT770 Pro 80 Ohm version. I think that'd be the best match for you. If you have more to spend, get a little headphone amp or a Xonar DG for your computer to power your headphones at home.

youre talking about a 20$ "upgrade".

often times that is really just a "side-grade". a different manufacturer with a slightly different signature to their sound, and a similar price point.

While i personally cannot comment on either headphone, i find it difficult to believe that one is significantly better than the other to warrant "upgrading" at any point in time unless one had failed and needed replacing.

if cost is an issue, and you are looking to upgrade, save a few bucks each week/month and dedicate them to a significant upgrade.

If you are patient, you can get the AKG 553 Pros from massdrop for like 150$ (going off memory) which are more in the range of a 200-215$ headphone. or the AKG K267 Tiestos for like 115$ which are more like 150-200$ headphones.

also found the ath m50x for 139$ with a case. idk why this packade deal is cheaper than the cans alone for 160$ on amazon right now, but it seems to be legit.

If you're patient, usually you can find a pair of Audio Technica ATH-M50x for around $120 if you browse slickdeals or any other deal aggregator.
