What kind of lock screen security do you have enabled?
If you have a PIN, logging in is pretty easy because you can use a USB keyboard with your multi-port adapter.
My mom shattered her screen and it wouldnt show a display either. I had AirDroid installed on her phone so we could see the display (sounds like you can use your TV). I had https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B074DRG8RR/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 mailed to them and they plugged in a USB Mouse/Keyboard combo. They used the USB Keyboard to login and the mouse to navigate the screen afterwards. It was a bit to navigate because the cursor would often disappear but after some patience, we were able to open the play store and install a wifi transfer app to transfer the files.

There are two kinds of USB-C to USB-A adapters. The very compact type, and the cable type. The very compact type is nice because they're so small, but the problem they have is sometimes they're so wide the block the next port. The cable type of adapter should not have that problem because the USB-C end is kept narrow.
The nice thing about both is that they are now extremely inexpensive, now well below $10 for a 2-pack.
Buy a USB-A hub and a USB-C adapter.
It's kinda clunky, but there are no good powered USB-C hubs right now.
