I don't know much about the programming side. I did buy the kindle version of the newest 3ds Max manual and it's got a lot of detail about all the tools. I don't think it goes to an algorithm level but it's a great resource to have, especially with the search feature on the kindle. It might be a good place to start to really help you understand how each part of the program works.
