This brush will last you a long time with proper care. It's also reasonably priced and has a great spray pattern (pencil line to almost three inches). As for a compressor I personally use a California air tool - quite air model found here

I use this guy because of the large tank and because it has a rust free tank. Most model or little compressors have tanks that are made out of iron which will rust after some time. But depending on how much you wanna spend here are ones I would recommend because they come with a tank and an adjustable regulator/water trap (but as you can see they are not to far off from the California one)

I use a Badger Patriot 105 along with a Super Fine Conversion Kit. I use a Badger Aspire TC910 compressor, but I also used a variant of this little mini air compressor for about a year which worked great.

For paints I used Citadel; what you see here is Incubi Darkness, followed by Kabalite Green and then Sybarite Green. I did a final brush edge highlight with Gauss Blaster Green. I get these at my FLGS.

I recently got the the Vallejo GameAir set for my birthday, and the paint is great. I didn't use it here though, this is all Citadel paint.

As for technique, I based the whole model black (with the riders separate) and then applied a fairly broad highlight of Incubi Darkness on the higher (where the light hitting the model was more prevalent) spots, then moved the brush a bit closer to catch the inner parts with Kabalite Green, then a bit closer using the same technique with Sybarite green. As for the edges I just purposefully over-sprayed so only half the paint hit the model, giving it a sharp edge.

The GameAir set from Vallejo comes with a color conversion chart but doesnt cover most of the "Dark Eldar" colors, only the basics. You can thin down Citadel paints with water, but the pigment in them is thicker than actual air brush paint, so your brush will clog, and paint drying on the air brush needle is a real annoyance. Other than that, I'd recommend watching a few videos on airbrushing 101, this effect was really not hard to apply at all once you get a gist for trigger control and aiming.

Other than that, the Wyches were painted following pretty much every Dark Eldar armor/flesh painting video you can find, haha.

I did a lot of research/reading reviews/watching videos when i was getting my airbrush. I think I waited almost 3 months before making a purchase. The two that everyone always suggested to start with is an Iwata Eclipse or a Badger Patriot 105. I decided on the Badger. Then it sat on a shelf for a year because i was trying to decide on a compressor. Never really wanted to invest the money for a nice silent one. Instead, I bought a 10 gallon tank and some fittings and plummed it up. I fill it up with our compressor in the garage. It lasts me about 2 hours til I have to fill it back up.

If you are not worried about the noise, you can just buy a cheap pancake compressor from a local hardware store. I do suggest getting one with a few gallon tank though so that it doesn't kick on as much since they are loud as fuck. You will need a filter whatever route you go since non-airbrush ones usually don't have one.

You can get a tankless one .

It runs near constantly and can heat up. They are not ideal, but can do the trick for small jobs. I tend to work on my models for an entire day once a week, so I have one with a 3L tank.

If you got the super cheapie one there for $60 you could get the Badger 105 and you would probably have a little bit left over.

There is also this one. It is cheaper, so I really can’t speak to it’s quality.

I'm pretty happy with the quality of everything and it makes painting a base coat of pure white or yellow super simple. also makes painting a color shift or pattern very easy. if you have the cash i would highly recommend it

Honestly, that compressor is good, but the Master's airbrushes aren't great. A really good airbrush for starters is the Badger Patriot 105. It's got very few moving parts, lots of tutorials on how to use and clean it, and does the job for a decent price.

Since you have a Harbor Freight near you, if you don't care about noise, then this post from awhile back is still relevant for your budget. If you live in an apartment and/or noise matters, then cheap Master airbrush sets are your best bet.

If you want to build a ghetto spray booth AND care about your health, this guide is a good read. Otherwise, Master Portable Booths get the job done, though they seem to be a lot more expensive now than they were a couple months ago (~$60-$70 with shipping). If you can get them cheap, they are very portable when folded up, which is great for storage in an apartment and travelling to gunpla builder get-togethers. But they are basically high power computer fans with a power supply, basic fiberglass filters, and a plastic housing, which can be DIY for less.

edit: NEOs are good but sometimes if you are patient, you can get a significantly better brush for less. Some good ones are:

  There are some caveats with each of these, such as not having extra nozzles of different sizes, or not having good local suppliers for replacement parts. On that note, if you buy off of Craigslist, you should try to get as much of a discount as possible, even if it still looks "brand new." If it breaks down on you right away, depending on how difficult it is to procure replacement parts, you might as well have bought a brand new brush to begin with. But sometimes you can get a really good deal.
  
  It's also not a bad idea to start off cheap to see if you enjoy airbrushing, have a feasible set up for it, AND have the time for it to make it worth your while. From a cheap brush like a NEO or a Master kit, you can incrementally upgrade brush, compressor, accessories for the most part, so long as you can find the right adapters for the various air tool fittings. Old or "bad" brushes can still be good for laying down primer or basecoats that are harder to mess up, while reserving the better brushes for shading and detail work.

Depends on your budget, I'd recommend getting quality tools from the get go, if you can afford them.

Decent starting setup would be TC-20T compressor (or equivalent, there's a bunch of similar compressors coming from the same chinese factory) and either Neo for Iwata, Badger Patriot 105 or H&S Ultra. All of them offer good performance and will last you quite a while. Personally, I'd go for Ultra simply for the ease of maintenance.

If you're on a really tight budget, you can look for some cheap chinese kit. Not the highest quality, but it'll do well enough as a learning tool.

Ordered a Badger Patriot 105 only to find out that the store was actually out of stock and didn't expect to get any more for another 3 weeks. Haven't found any other stores that have it in stock and I'm wary of Amazon's current preorder actually being available on schedule.

I figured if it's going to take a while to get a Badger Patriot 105, I could maybe buy a cheaper one to at least get my feet wet in regards to airbrushing, cuz like every other piece of painting equipment i bought for an airbrush setup arrived except for the airbrush itself. That said, I don't really know much about the cheaper quality airbrushes, so looking for testimonials from people that have tried using the cheaper ones like maybe this $20 master airbrush i found on amazon.

Also, wut can I do in the mean time to check that my compressor is working properly, just in case I need to return it to get a replacement?

This is the one I'm talking about. It's a big step up from the Master you linked in terms of quality, it's optimal for beginners (forgiving tolerances, tool-less assembly), and it won't be obsoleted by anything else you might get in the future--it's still be your workhorse for priming and basing. It's ideal to learn on.

Without knowing the condition of the brushes/compressor, you can get a new compressor and brush for about the same price. Honestly starting out it would probably be more confusing to have all those brushes at your disposal instead of becoming proficient with one.

Anyone care to provide some input on my first air brush setup? I haven't bought it yet but this is what I'm planning on purchasing:

Airbrush = Badger 105 Patriot
Compressor = Master Airbrush TC-40T
Spray Booth = Master Portable Spray Booth

Here's a few of the lingering questions I have:

• What cleaning kit would you recommend? Does the cleaner fluid matter that much?

This was the set that I initially purchased. The air brushes that came with the kit are a little on the cheap side but they were good for me to learn with.

This is the spray booth that I purchased a little while ago. So far the booth has been great. I'm able to spray indoors, both rattle cans and my airbrush. You just have to change the filter every once in a while, and I think the filters are ~$10.

I recently purchased this airbrush. I havent been able to use it yet though because I need an adapter to use it with the hose for my compressor.

Something like this is okay to start with. If you want a better brush the Iwata Neo CN and the Badger Patriot 105 are highly recommended and are beginner friendly.

I purchased this guy for $64.82. It was an Open Box unit on the Amazon Warehouse Deals. Literally, still shrink wrapped, just in a different box. No damage. Usually a $200-250 air compressor. I was given my first airbrush (my daily driver) as payment during a commission. It is a Badger Patriot 105. I was intimidated by it for over a year and then I decided to jump head first one day and honestly, I haven't looked back. Only regret was not starting sooner. Amazon has the Badger Patriot 105 on sale for $75. At the beginning of the year Badger Airbrush company ran a Happy 54th Birthday Sale and I picked up the Badger Renegade Krome for $54 haha. It retails for $200-250 but Amazon has it on sale for $102. I have yet to use this guy yet, but I am nearing the end of a project and I am going to give it a whirl in a couple weekends. The Airbrush hose for the badgers are listed as well.

With that being said, you can find deals ALL OVER THE INTERNET....you just have to look for them. I am always scowering the web for the best deals possible haha. For the past 3 years I have been using a 5hp construction grade pancake compressor with a moisture trap. Let me tell you....I REGRET not upgrading to an airbrush compressor much sooner. The air is more consistent, you can fine tune the correct PSI and it is exponentially more quiet. I personally don't care about the tank feature, but that is a personal preference.

heap kit from eBay here. A better airbrush is the Badger Patriot 105. You can use the compressor with either airbrush. The Patriot will do your priming, base coating, color blocks, and beyond if you want to more fully use the airbrush as a tool. Save your money you are like $100 bucks off getting a decent set up.

Edit: Let me elaborate on my reasons a little bit.

You want an air compressor with a tank and an automatic on/off switch.

This will keep your airbrush from getting pulsating air and the on/off switch will extend the life of your compressor (so will the tank as it isn't running all the time). Some added bonuses is being able to work without a lot of noise.

There are some cheap ones you can buy on amazon. ( TheTC-40T and the Master Tank Compressor)

Airbrushes are tricky. but you still can get soem good ones under $100. Like the Badger Krome RK-1, Badger 105 Patriot, Iwata Neo (Not made by Iwata but supported by them), and Iwata Revolution

I vote airbrush. It really was a game changer for me. There is an old saying--When you buy good tools you cry once when you pay for them. When you buy cheap tools you cry every time you try to use them.

You'll also need a compressor or other air source, and a few accessories which make things easier (a stand to hold the brush upright, a spray-out pot, stuff like that) but often you can make those accessories yourself.

I've got a question regarding my starting airbrush. I'm comparing the Badger 105 to a Master.

I don't have a compressor and I do plan on using an airbrush for multiple kits over the year, but I don't think I'll be able to upgrade for a while. If I buy the Master, I'd assume the airbrush would have problems before the compressor, but hopefully it would last long enough for the upgrade. Can I use the compressor from the Master kit for the Badger 105 (upgrading to the Badger later)? Also, does anyone know how long their compressor has lasted?

But to start, get a compressor with a reservoir so you can have extended paint sessions without overheating the pump. Something like this, Also some Dentist supply depot have oilless compressors with reservior ( the oiless part is very important for painting) that are really quiet but can get a bit expensive.

Get a good airbrush, you can find good quality airbrush in amazon but skip ANY of this type you won't get much out of those. This is a very good gravity fed airbrush.

I got a Badger 105 Patriot and I love it. It needed an adapter for the compressor, and the whole set up was an investment, yet it was so worth it.
