It usually starts to makes sense after 2-3 month and it took me a year or so to fully grasp the theory. Compared to the years it took me to even remotely understand the standard model, this was so fast... I studied physics for some years, but to be honest, it did not make much sense to me. I had strong philosophical problems, missing arrow of time for example and was never able to think relativity on a fundamental level which bothered me since I was 14. Then the huge number of constants and the "logic beyond human understanding" of the quantum world... I always prefer classical logic as it is clearly thinkable.
For me his approach made the most sense of all unified approaches: first checking all assumptions against newer research, drop paradigms and then construct from scratch using the simplest assumptions possible. A true genius in my opinion and I'm not surprised that his model is not even discussed. I asked dozens of physicists over the last year and asked for their opinion about this model. You will usually not get an answer or if so, the model is unknown.
