Ok I dont hop that much. I enjoy a good magic system but above all else I enjoy a good book. Unfortunately once youve read the big leagues it becomes a matter of searching in the forgotten corners of the Amazon recommendations in hopes of finding a hidden gem instead of stepping into a young adult harem monstrosity.

There's actually a brand new indie title out there called Battle Mage by Peter Flannery that's getting rave reviews.

Basically it is a really good story of suffering and redemption. Though it is a debut novel, (and at times you can really tell it's a debut novel, mostly in character naming which ranges between awesome and holy shit that is a stupid name), it is a deeper story than much of what is available in fantasy.
