You could place all the equipment behind the screen (using a Harmony remote + hub) and you could also place the center channel speaker behind it if you use an acoustically transparent screen; I don't think the recessed area is wide enough to properly accommodate the front L/R speakers (unless using a large screen that isn't flush to the wall and extends a few feet on each side past the recessed area).

Using a fixed vs pull down is up to you.

Since you don't have pre-wiring for surround sound (unless it's one of those outlets that looks like it's for coax), placing the equipment behind the screen (and using the Harmony hub) will make running wires along the base molding less obvious.

I don't know a ton about projectors and which brands are better, but this one looks good.

Just a regular projector. Most do decent 3D now.

Less than the price of a good TV. Couple that with a good surround sound system and nice seating and you've got yourself a home theater that'll rival most actual movie theaters.

Plus the popcorn is WAY cheaper.

If it ain't broken then don't fix it. You probably wouldn't get huge upgrades for upgrading. Maybe longer bulb hours depending on the projector and other additional features like the 'DarbeeVision' from the Optoma HD28DSE or the Rec 709 color from the BenQ HT3050. It's kind of a lot of extra $$$ for not huge upgrades from your current projector (they're still 1080p).

4k projectors are still expensive too. There is stuff like the Epson 5040UB (UB = Ultra Black). That isn't native 4k though and is $2,800.

I think the deal you are talking about is a scam. Most of projectors on Amazon are hijacked by scamming sellers who pretend to sell user items for way below their market value. You can check if a seller is a scammer by going to their profile page. If it says "contact foo@gmail.com before placing an order" - that's a scam.

Another way is to check what else this seller is selling. I saw a few scammers who were selling everything for $400, from high-end projector ($4k+) to cheap photo cameras (<$200) for the same price. They are also all "just launched" or have low sale.

Edit: yup, 2 sellers claiming their are selling HT3050 for $300:

  1. Viva Vida Gallery Just Launched ~ NEW ~ For let us know ONLY at: Joahuk @ computer4u,com IMMEDIATELY BUY AND DELIVERY ~ THANK YOU !!

  2. Aunt Molly's Rain Barrels - ~ NEW ~ For let us know ONLY at: Joahuk @ computer4u,com IMMEDIATELY BUY AND DELIVERY ~ THANK YOU !!

At the top of your price range but given that 10 years have passed it will be a noticeable upgrade, particularly for HD sports or game consoles which may be running at 60FPS.

However, the VPL-VW50 is still not a bad projector by any means. As long as the bulb has some lifespan and the screen has no blemishes I would keep it until you can afford the Optoma UHD50 which is $1400.

Provide model numbers of the speakers and subwoofer if possible. Sound is equally important for a good HT, and some people cheap out, either not knowing or caring about this. A new receiver may also be beneficial by itself, with support for lossless audio codecs, and 3D sound formats such as Atmos and DTS:X.
