You're getting a 5.1 speaker set with tiny sats and a small subwoofer. Is it worth it...I just don't know. There are certainly other options in that price range that could be better. Here are some that I would consider. Either way you'll still need an AVR to power these speakers.

  • Polk TL1600 $360 Cheaper, and I think a higher class set.

  • Polk RM705 $350 Cheaper and a newer version of the set you mentioned I do believe.

  • Boston Acoustics CS2300 $200 + Dayton Sub 1200 $150 You're going to get a much larger sub for the money. If this is an issue I would look at getting either a smaller Dayton or a Polk PSW111.

  • BIC DV32 $55 x 2 + a BIC DV32CLR $40 + a BIC F12 $225. You could also upgrade to the DV52 for the fronts. You're getting small speakers but these actually don't sound bad. Better than the Polks...I don't know.

  • Micca MB42X $90 x2 + Center $80 + Dayton 1200. You're getting actual bookshelf speakers. These will allow you to cross the sub lower so it's not doing that mid bass work of some of the smaller speakers. This will sound good for an entry level system.

Oh, snap...I didn't realize that the $166 for the Alesis was for the pair, not just one.

Sorry about that. Um...At this price level I have no idea in terms of real monitors.

At the moment I'm actually using an old pair of Bic America Adatto Dv52Si but are obviously not studio monitors. But check out Bic America, they're really good for cheap.
