Try checking out the Epson 8350 refurb: $900

A DIY screen from Carl's Place in 16:9 ratio 120": ~$100

A Denon 1913 receiver or whatever strikes your fancy at Accessories4Less: $280

This leaves you with around 700 dollars for speakers. There are a HUGE number of options at this point and the deals are always changing.

I recommend the BIC America F12 subwoofer: $200

Then for your last $500 dollars get two floor-standers and a matching center and whatever surrounds you can get.

At some point you will want to consider the following: speaker stands for bookshelf speakers, risers for floor-standing speakers, speaker wire, a second subwoofer (identical to the first), and room treatment for improved acoustics.

Don't let people say you can't have an awesome set up for 2,500. That is more than I've ever had to spend and I have a great time. Please post pictures when you've got it together!

EDIT: Some grammar.

u/ZeosPantera · 14 pointsr/audiophile

Short answer.. DON'T BUY THESE..

Assuming the $60 budget..

These and This for starters.

If a sub is really needed. Just save up and buy a real one (~$200)

The last line makes me think you have an amp.. Do you?

Barring significant discounts, the following list tends to be the best bang-for-buck value subs, in order of increasing price:

$110 Dayton Audio SUB-1000

$140 Dayton Audio SUB-1200

$200 BIC F12. ^(Edit: not sure if designed by Dr. Hsu.)

$290 BIC PL-200 II (now $250). ^(Edit: Designed by Dr. Hsu.)

They are all great at their price points. But if you can swing the pricier BIC, you should be VERY happy.

u/A_Bag_Full_of_Poops · 8 pointsr/hometheater

Hello, fellow Canadian!

DO NOT BUY THIS SYSTEM. You can get a MUCH better system for $25.49 more.

Check this out:

ELAC F5 Towers - $839.98

ELAC B4 Surrounds - $269.99

ELAC C5 Center - $319.99

BIC F12 Subwoofer - $295.53 (incl. shipping)

Sub-Total: $1725.49

I would recommend just getting ELAC B5s or B6s for the front speakers and you can save a couple hundred dollars more (which I might put towards a better subwoofer or a second subwoofer).

Sorry I wrote all that without directly addressing your question, but that Polk package is bad value (even though it's on sale) and the included subwoofer is a pile of steaming shyte.

So, for pairing speakers with a receiver, pretty much anything works. Denon, Marantz, and Yamaha are the most recommended brands here.

Gibby's Electronics sells the Denon X1300 for $399.99 (b-stock) but they're out of stock. They also have the S710W for $399.99 (b-stock, I don't get the pricing), which is probably your best option unless you're willing to wait for b-stock to come in for the X1300.

Yes, the general consensus among audiophiles is that Bose is overpriced and soundbars are very underwhelming. "Real 5.1 sound" cannot (yet) be achieved without a real 5.1 setup. Most HTIB (Home Theatres in a Box) will give you better sound than a soundbar.

I own this 5.1 Pioneer speaker setup found here and I highly recommend it to anyone that is looking for a good entry level home theater setup. Shop around and you can get a fantastic deal on the whole setup. I got the 5.0 setup for less than $300 and then upgraded to a $200 BIC 12 sub to get the 0.1.

You will then of course need a decent reciever (about $250) and cables and you will blow any speaker bar out of the water. I am not certain if this is within your budget since you only quoted "cheaper than bose" but I have seen this exact setup recommend many times before and I feel it is one of the best values for the price.

Edit: I was way under your budget. You could definitely do better than this setup at your price range.

u/DieselWang · 8 pointsr/hometheater

Within your budget:

u/hack_tc · 7 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

A 3.1, or possibly even a 3.2 setup down the road, should do nicely. I would highly consider these Emptek (now RBH sound) speakers and this matching Center, along with a sub of your choice. The Bic F12 is a local favorite. This leaves some change (~$400) for a receiver and wires and whatnot, or maybe some speaker stands.

Those speakers really sound fantastic though, and they look like something you would normally find in the $1000+ range of bookshelves. Plus, they match your furniture pretty well, so thats a plus.

u/thrasherht · 6 pointsr/hometheater

So I am gonna try to answer your actual question, though PLEASE heed the advice of upgrading your system.

I looked at the AVR you have, and you will 100% without a doubt NEVER get 5.1 input to that device. It simply does not have an interface to accept any type of digital audio input.
So unfortunately it just isn't gonna happen in any way shape or form. No adapter, device, or otherwise will make it happen.

-----

Now that we have that cleared up, if you want 5.1, you do have options.
Your speakers look to be 6 Ohms, so you need an AVR that can support 6 Ohms, and you can use the exist speakers. Though you will need a subwoofer to replace the proprietary stuff.

I personally like my onkyo AVR, it has worked extremely well for me. This one is the upgraded model that supports Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, 4K, HDR10, and Dolby Vision.
So this will do so much more then your current setup.
https://www.amazon.com/Onkyo-TX-NR676-Channel-Network-Receiver/dp/B06XTYXH9M/

Just that single purchase alone will get you 90% of the way to a decent setup.
Combine that with something like a BIC F12, and you have a kicking theater setup that will honestly rival that of your actual local theater.

This was my exact budget! I ended up going with the Denon AVR-S510BT from Accessories4Less as my receiver. I got it for $130 (normally around ~$250). It can carry a 4k/HDCP2.2 signal and also has two subwoofer outs so I can upgrade to two subs and I will be using this for years in the future. Also has 5 channels so I can easily add a center/surrounds in the near future.

As for speakers, I went with Pioneer's Andrew Jones SP-FS52. I got them for $180 for the pair which is a steal because on Amazon they are going for $260 for the pair! They sound amazing and my receiver has no problem driving them.

And for the sub, I went with the trusty budget [BIC America F12](BIC America F12 12-Inch 475-Watt Front Firing Powered Subwoofer https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0015A8Y5M/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_oTmTyb9EG6AE1) which BUMPS, and is going for about $215 on Amazon at the moment. When placed right, this thing can hit the frequencies that makes your chest rumble and without being too loud.

Overall I spent exactly $525 (right in your budget!) and got myself an amazing sounding system to watch TV and movies, and the best part is there's so much room to upgrade! I can upgrade from 2.1 to 5.2 when I feel, and since the receiver carries 4k, I won't have to upgrade for a while.

Hope this helps!

u/sharkamino · 6 pointsr/hometheater

Go with a larger 12", the BIC America F12 for $200.

Next step up is the Bic Acoustech PL-200 II for $300.

The better HSU or Rythmik subwoofers start around $550 for a 12".

u/KurlyFryze · 5 pointsr/hometheater

I've had the BIC F12, for about 2 weeks now and it has been amazing. Extremely powerful and very clear. Should be right around your budget and it also looks like it has the inputs you need.

u/creason08 · 5 pointsr/hometheater

LR: Elac Debut 2.0 6.2 bookshelfs

C: Elac Debut 2.0 6.2 center

Sub: Bic America F12 or Dayton Audio Sub-1200

AVR: Something here. Whatever fits your budget and has the features you need. Make sure that if you're going to be streaming music to get one that is at least wifi compatible or networking (ethernet jack). I personally can recommend the Yamaha RX-V483. If that Yamaha is too expensive then go with a Denon with comparable features.

Stands: (If you don't already have a surface to put your LR on) Monoprice monoliths (24inch or 28inch, depending on ear height at listening/watching position) or Monoprice glass

If the price comes out to be too much then go with the Dayton sub and a cheaper AVR.
You'll also need some speaker wire, a wire cutter, and possibly some silicone hemispheres

That is a 3.1 to start. I think you'll be very happy and impressed with it. Given some time and some saving you'll be ready to upgrade to some surrounds. Delayed gratification is always worth it in this game :)

u/umdivx · 5 pointsr/hometheater

>Budget of around $200.
>
>Will this do the job?

The subwoofer you linked? HELL NO.

For $200 the ONLY sub worth looking at is the BIC F12 https://www.amazon.com/BIC-America-F12-475-Watt-Subwoofer/dp/B0015A8Y5M

It still won't rock your room completely but it'll be light years better than the crappy Polk sub you have.

> I'll be using this in addition to the Polk 8" sub.

Donate to good will. Don't bother using it ever again once you get a new sub.

u/iGuitar93 · 5 pointsr/hometheater

The Bic F12 is arguably the best sub in that price range but with a room that big you are going to need more than one sub to get full coverage. 14x30 is a good sized room.

http://www.amazon.com/BIC-America-F12-475-Watt-Subwoofer/dp/B0015A8Y5M/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1382973964&sr=8-1&keywords=bic+f12

u/agray20938 · 5 pointsr/hometheater

Assuming you don't need a receiver? I'd pick up 2 Chane bookshelf speakers and a BIC F12. If you don't like those speakers, you could also go with some HSU Research bookshelves too.

EDIT: Whoops, didn't notice you said you get 60% off of klipsch. In that case, pick up a couple RF-62's and the matching subwoofer, and you should be around that price range.

u/homeboi808 · 5 pointsr/hometheater

Denon S710W ($250), it handles HDR, has Audyssey Bronze, and ARC (the S510BT doesn't have those, so get that if you don't care).

Pioneer FS52 ($90x2, if you have Prime)

BIC Venturi 10" ($170).

If you have a subwoofer, I personally don't think towers are worth it, besides aesthetics. Amazon sells the bookshelf version of those towers for half the price ($90 for the pair). So you could go that way to save money, or get better bookshelves and/or a better sub.

Or, if you don't care about future expandability, you can get a real nice pair of powered monitors with a sub out, bypassing the need for a receiver. Such as the new Kanto YU6 for $390 (available in many colors) + either the BIC F12 ($215) or the Dayton 15" ($200).

u/swatson87 · 5 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

https://www.amazon.com/BIC-America-F12-475-Watt-Subwoofer/dp/B0015A8Y5M People seem to like this one. I don't own it, but very nice for the money.

Edit: I know this is like $10 over your budget, but figured you could stretch it $10.

u/Spaded21 · 5 pointsr/hometheater

You will be disappointed with that sub as it only goes down to 40 Hz. I'd look at the BIC F-12. It will get down to 25Hz and well within the budget.

u/Dopdee · 5 pointsr/hometheater

At that budget, I'd go with Denon 1400 and BIC F12 sub.

And if you want to add some speakers

u/_mutelight_ · 4 pointsr/hometheater

You're not going to find low frequency response in a sub (no pun intended) $200 subwoofer. Low frequency response is the most expensive/challenging part of making a quality subwoofer.

Best bet is to find a 2nd hand SVS, HSU, or Rythmik subwoofer but there is this which is a decent balance.

u/explosivo563 · 4 pointsr/audio

We're gonna need your budget in order to help. But A 2.1 setup is definitley the way to go to upgrade ehar you have. Sell those. They are very popular. If you want strictly a computer speaker setup, a 2 channel amp is probably fine. My bestbuy has a really weak bookshelf speaker selection, but you probably at least have the pioneer andrew jones speakers. They are well reviewed. If you have a nice discount they might be a good idea. Also a simple rule is the bigger they are, the louder and lower they get.

/r/zeos has a good 2.1 guide and /r/budgetaudiophile has great extensive speaker recommendation list. If you want to really rock, the pioneers may not be ideal.

Soundbars have inherent shortcomings that are hard to ignore. While they certainly do provide better audio than the TV putting too much money into one is not the way to go. You would be better served with a 2.1 AVR based system. You can expand it, have more control over the sound and will have something that you upgrade on in the future. That being said if you need the compact form factor you can go down that road just be aware that they are throw away devices.

Here are some options that I would consider.

  1. 2.1 system - Pioneer VSX530 refurb $130, Dayton Sub 1200 $135, Micca MB42X $90 (less with coupon) and a Subwoofer cable $12. This should leave you with a bit left for any HDMI, speaker wire, and HDMI cables you may need. This will be a very nice entry level system that will sound much better than a soundbar. You'll get better stereo separation and a much better low end vs a small soundbar sub.

  2. Soundbar system - Yamaha ATS 1060/YAS-106 refurb $160, BIC F12 $220 and a sub cable $12 (linked above). This hybrid system will use a very good entry level sub with a sound bar. The benefit here is that you'll get a sub that you can use with another system vs one that is linked to the soundbar and will only work with it.

BIC America F12 for $183.45 I paid about $250 for it about 6 months ago.

There is a pretty good chance I have the same receiver as you.

This sub shakes my entire 1800sqft house. It gets uncomfortably loud with plenty of power to spare.

FYI, if your receiver is anything like mine, you will have to set the front channel speaker type to "small" in order to get output to the sub in a 2.1 configuration, or you will have to set the output mode to 5/7 channel stereo.

Hey /u/ZeosPantera,

I first wanted to say you are the fucking man. This subreddit has been so incredibly helpful in figuring out my audio system. Additionally, I was wondering if you could provide your expertise for me.

My fraternity is currently getting our house back in a few weeks, and we have money to spend on home improvement (in this case, an audio system for the large common room). I'm looking for a system that can double as both a home theater sound system as well as speakers for a large, loud party. I assembled a list of components and was hoping you can recommend any changes. This is the list so far:

Receiver - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00B7X2OV2/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER

Center - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0015A8Y3E/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER

Front speakers (tower) - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002ISZEV2/ref=ox_sc_act_title_7?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER

Rear speakers - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CRMKJTQ/ref=ox_sc_act_title_6?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A1WPEQCN6WJKZG

Subwoofer - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0015A8Y5M/ref=ox_sc_act_title_8?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER

These are the ones you listed as being loud enough to play music on as well. Will these products fit the bill for my needs (home theater, large frat party)? Also, these extras to set up the system:

Banana plugs - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0090CVJZ4/ref=ox_sc_act_title_3?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER

RCA cable - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003FVX9FO/ref=ox_sc_act_title_4?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A1DCPNQKKEISZB

Copper wire - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00APEG9MO/ref=ox_sc_act_title_5?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER

Is there anything I'm missing in order to set up the system? Thank you so much!!

Speaker placement can be hard to figure out, but that all depends on the space. 3.1 is fairly easy even in small areas. I had a small living room and this worked out great for me.

When a better idea of the space you have, I could give you a build on what I'd do based on your budget.

A new amplified sub woofer might be a better deal in the long run, as it would deliver more bass than 50 watts can deliver.

Well, I did the best I could. I ruled out bookshelves since you said you had the room since bookshelves in this price range don't do so well with "loud" without causing distortion and hearing damage.

So, here are some options. Get one thing out of each section. Try to spend as much as you can on the speakers.

Speakers

BIC America Venturi DV64 x2 (~$250)

Infinity Primus P363 x2 (~$350)

PSB Alpha T1 (~$400)

Integrated Amplifier

SMSL SA50 (~$75)

Emotiva mini-X a-100 (~$190)

The following aren't necessary to get things working but you should add them when you get the cash.

DAC

schiit modi 2 (~$100)

This connects your computer to the amplifier. Without this, you just use a male 3.5mm to rca stereo cable.

Subwoofer

BIC America F12 (~$190)

You connect the amp's outputs to the speaker inputs on the sub and then connect the speakers to the sub's speaker outputs.

If I were you I would start out with the PSB speakers and emotiva amp (if you can afford the ~$600) then add the sub when you get more money. The DAC will sound better than your computer's sound card and reduce static and interference from your computer.

u/raeanin · 3 pointsr/hometheater

RIP fireplace.

Seriously though, was there no other option for TV placement?

Great choices on the audio gear though. One of the the best new speaker sets in that price range. Should sound great. When you start looking for a sub though, I would recommend looking at other models, the big box store brands like Pioneer typically make lousy subs(at least in their budget line). The Bic F12 is often recommended as the best new sub in the <$200 price range.

edit: PS, love the DW decor. We have the same Van Gogh tardis print in our living room = )

u/Skitch_n_Sketch · 3 pointsr/audiophile

Movies, music, or both? If you've got room for a sub anyway, you could consider the smaller Q150 / Q100 and pair it with a sub. Also wouldn't buy the Klipsch sub unless you're getting a deal on it, BIC F12 costs slightly more and is much better.

u/thatguyonthecouch · 3 pointsr/hometheater

If you're willing to go $11 over your budget, then get this.

u/ctfrommn · 3 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

For $400 CAD your best options would be.....

Fluance DB12

Bic F12

Klipsch R12SW very good price on this one and would be my choice for that budget.

Obviously if you can save some more you can get even better options. They will be a lot more though.

u/CaptZ_3148 · 3 pointsr/hometheater

This center is what you want.

For a sub the Bic F12 is a popular entry level sub at that price point.

Go with that for now, and then save up for a better front L,R,C and you can move all the Pioneer bookshelfs to surrounds and rears.

u/Aco2504 · 3 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

Save money, get better sub later.

This would be an excellent choice - RSL Speedwoofer

As would new (or used) subwoofer from REL, SVS, HSU, Rythmik, or Velodyne. Good bass is worth throwing good money at.

If you simply cannot wait, try to save up for a BIC F12 or PL200 (both slightly over $200)... probably the best, new, "budget" subs that can be recommended.

But try to save up for a better sub - those Kantos and your ears deserve better.

Under no circumstances go with Polk subwoofers.

I just did all this work to show someone my computer which I named "Maelstrom". It wasn't exactly "unlimited" money but it's pretty damn close. I actually built it though.

Honestly, I spent so much time gathering the links to share with someone I need to post it more than once :P

With your budget, if you don't want to go modular and add the pieces as you go along and get a 5.1 right away, think this seems like a decent package that you'll be very happy with for a good couple of years:

These Pionneer towers x2

And the surrounds

And center that go with the set

This sub seems very well liked around here

The amp you mentionned (I have had RX-V657 for years, very good) is also very good an will be plenty

rest on cables and stuff if you need, go to http://www.monoprice.com

All that should come in around your budget!

Cheers and have fun!

u/Olgaar · 3 pointsr/hometheater

Are you planning to use Surrounds? I can't help but feel surrounds would be a little awkward in your room. I'd recommend a 3.0 or 3.1 system. Here's some equipment to start taking a look at.

Speakers:

  • Hsu Research 3.0 package in black $519 - These are 8" deep--I know size is important to you. This is a quality setup, but probably doesn't allow budget for a sub.
  • Pioneer Andrew Jones Bookshelves + Center $230 - that price include the center and bookshelves. 7.1" deep. This frees up money in the budget for a sub.
  • HTD Middy Compact $267 - You'd use three of these speakers, one for left, one for right, one for center. 5.25" deep. Don't use these without a sub--in fact, make sure you buy a high quality sub if you intend to use these. Not neccaserily a sub that digs ultra deep, but one that can handle mid-bass well.
  • HTD Flat Panel Speaker $450 - These look like a 3-way version of the Middy's. You'd use and mount them same as the Middy's. Probably puts you back in a position of not having money for a sub, but these little guys might put out enough bass to keep you happy. Which is NOT to say they would output subwoofer-like bass... nothing replaces a true subwoofer. 4.25" deep.

I've only heard the Hsu's and the Pioneers in person. Without going in to detail, I reccomend them both. If you're not a demanding listener, save the money and go with the Pioneers. If you are, I think the Hsu's are worth the extra cost. I haven't heard the HTD's but they might just be the right solution for you based on form factor.

    Subwoofers:

  • Hsu STF-1 $315 shipped.
  • BIC F12 $200
  • Dayton Sub1200 $110

That's basically the sub I would recommend at each one of those price points.

    Receivers

I'm personally not a good source to reccomend receivers... just pick a 5.1 by a brand you like and at the price you can afford. Personally I've worked with Denon's and found nothing to complain about with them.
u/PURPL3H3YS · 3 pointsr/hometheater

Well, first of all, a lot of these products are listed at way over their actual market value because you are linking to the manufacturer website.

The BIC F12 can be had here for $200 with free shipping. Also, I think people normally recommend the F12 over any Polk sub.

I would probably avoid Klipsch if you are worried about bright/fatiguing speakers. Klipsch are know to sound harsh to some people. Polk is a very well regarded brand as a start into home theater, and many people are content with them and don't feel the need to ever upgrade. That being said, I would check out Newegg's prices for something like the Polk 75T but the TSi series is also good (from what I hear). Someone may have better advice within the Polk lineup which would be the best choice, but if you can go listen to them at Best Buy or something, that may make your decision a lot easier!

u/rfsstn · 3 pointsr/audiophile

Since you didn't list a price range, I'll assume you either have infinite money or are on a tight budget.

If it's the former, get the JL Audio Gotham for $12,000.

If the latter, the Big America F12 is $200: http://www.amazon.com/BIC-America-F12-475-Watt-Subwoofer/dp/B0015A8Y5M

u/TophatMcMonocle · 3 pointsr/diyaudio

I have a BIC F12 under my computer desk and I'm real happy with it. It's not up to filling a living room with deep bass at high SPLs, but it provides plenty of clean low bass in a desktop setup. It extends much lower than the little Dayton or most smaller inexpensive subs. For a few years now, these have earned a reputation of being a "go to" low budget subwoofer. It's big, but I still have room under the desk for my computer tower, waste basket, paper shredder, and feet.

Yamaha RX-V583 was $500 bucks

Fluance Signature Hi-Fi Towers $700

Fluance Signature Hi-Fi surrounds $250

Fluance Signature Hi-Fi center $150

BIC America 475w sub $160 when I bought it.

I originally had a Vizio 55" 1080p TV back in the day that I used with this that was around a thousand. I upgraded to a Sony 65" 4k, that I have since moved to a different room, and am currently using a Sony X900E 65".

Before I went with the higher end Fluance stuff, I went with their $250 surround in a box, and it was still light years ahead of going to the theaters. It was also drastically cheaper. I helped set up a buddy, and for the sound without the TV, he went with the $250 speakers, same sub for $200, and an entry level Yamaha 5.1 that was on sale for $300 and absolutely loves it. $750 for something that will blow away those little HTIB away.

Lots of good options. Like someone else mentioned Jamo s803 for $200 are good, as are the Elac b6.2($240,) or Ascend CBM170($330,) with the Ascend's probably being the best of the bunch. These are all passive, so you'll need an amp, such as this receiver for $140.https://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/denavrs530bt/denon-avr-s530bt-5.2-ch-x-70-watts-bluetooth-a/v-receiver/1.html

That leaves enough for a subwoofer, BIC F12 will fit your needs for $212.
https://www.amazon.com/BIC-America-F12-475-Watt-Subwoofer/dp/B0015A8Y5M

Comes to be about $600 give or take depending on which speakers you choose.

Lastly you'll need speaker wire and an RCA cable for the subwoofer.
Swans are nice as they're just one piece, no amp required. Downside is it's a little more difficult to integrate a subwoofer.
Guess it comes down to convenience or modularity.

u/Shike · 2 pointsr/audiophile

Depends. If they're at a reasonable volume level and within a fair distance there's plenty of speakers that can sound pretty good without being large. If you're seeking volume, bass, low distortion, and filling a larger room things start getting more complex (and expensive).

Personally I don't feel Orb are particularly worthwhile due to using fullrange drivers which will have dispersion issue in the upper register. Instead NHT has some affordable bookshelf speakers that compare well. Considering the bargain basement pricing you could go with 5x SuperOne 2.1 from NHT with a BIC subwoofer here for a relatively compact system. Use the additional $100 to buy the wallmounts and the system should kick the Orb's ass in most objective performance criteria.

If you only need a 2.1 system, you could still go for a pair of the SuperOne and a better quality sub and get really solid performance considering. You could also step up to a more boutique speaker like Focal. Hell, if looking used you might be able to grab NHT Classic 3's for around $500/pr on Ebay which are excellent in performance being three way bookshelves. Of course, any of these would need stands, so expect a minimum $120 bump (IME) if using something quality.

This is where aesthetics, budget, room size, and performance criteria all start to play in.

u/polypeptide147 · 2 pointsr/audiophile

A BIC F12 sub will do the trick.

u/mobius1ace5 · 2 pointsr/audiophile

HEY!!!! Another TC-50 guy!!!! I am glad someone else can appreciate those ugly bastards for their damn good sound quality and hilarious manuals. I have a pair of BIC f-12's to pick up the bottom end of those speakers but I really do find them a bit boomy at certain frequencies, as most ported subs are.. But at the price I am doubtful that anything can come close to their performance outside of custom. At lower levels (3ish out of 10) they work in just fine. Only having the subs for a bit I am still working on placement, but I am very happy with them overall for the price paid (like 184 each). Grabbed them from Amazon with prime shipping, couldn't beat that..

u/motodoto · 2 pointsr/audiophile

I'm the thrifty kinda guy.

Refurbished Denon receiver, 2 Micca bookshelves, a Micca center channel, and a Bic America subwoofer. About 700 bucks total. Sounds good enough for me. I know much better is out there but it's hard to justify the costs.

My Sennheiser HD598SE's are great ($150), and I have a FiiO E10K ($75) that they plug into at work, and at home I just plug them in directly since the onboard soundcard isn't too bad surprisingly on my motherboard. I have a Sony SRS-X5 bluetooth speaker plugged into the back of it as well. I have those cheap-ass sony ANC headphones (20 bucks at the time I bought them) and they get the job done at a cheap price for planes and for the AC unit blasting in my office (I know... killing me, 80db of white noise all day long).

I have a friend from work that spent 50,000 bucks on his setup. It sounds great, and it's worth it, but I couldn't spend that much on it.

I'm more of a headphone kinda guy. My next upgrade would probably be going all out on headphones. A pair of Sennheiser HD800's probably. That's in the far future, I got stuff I want to do around the house first.

These are my workout earbuds

They are a great value.

u/zim2411 · 2 pointsr/hometheater

Ah, it looks like those are kits. It's probably the same plate amplifier for both models, but the 6600 includes a 10" sub vs. the 6200's 8" sub.

The BIC F12 is pretty much the go-to cheap sub and packs a hell of a lot more power than either the Polk you have, or the Pioneer.

u/mlph · 2 pointsr/audiophile

BIC F12 is probably your best bet in that price range. If you want to spend a little more the Klipsch RW12 are very good.

u/muhaski · 2 pointsr/hometheater

Something like this refurbished Onkyo. For the sub go with the BIC F12. With your budget I would wait for the rest. I'd also pick up a center channel before surrounds. If you are set on getting everything now for under $400 try Craigslist. Your speakers were discontinued, but here's your matching center on eBay.

u/TimeTomorrow · 2 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

you are way way way off. What is the most you can spend without raising any eyebrows?

You want at least 4 speakers in the corners of the gym. Any single speaker is going to sound like junk in a room that big. loud and blaring right next to it and weak further away.

This one has bluetooth, but you'd be better off with a chromecast anyway.

They used to sell for $5-600 but after they were discontinued, they were still being sold new-in-box for $199. I got one at that price and it's pretty damn nice, it won't play low enough to handle m.A.A.d city but it's about as good of a sub as you can get at that price.

What kind of sources do you plan on using, and what type of environment are you planning on listening in?

A subwoofer with a pair of bookshelves is the way to go on your budget. Something like the BIC America F12 along with the Micca/Muse combo at the top of this thread is a good start.

If you want more than one input or a remote control, get a receiver like the Yamaha R-S201 instead of the Muse.

u/AverageJoeAudiophile · 2 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

One of the bang for the buck subs would be the BIC F12 $188. It's bigger brother the BIC PL-200 $330 would be just past your budget.

If you wanted to get a center channel, you should be trying to stick to a matching JBL product if at all possible.

u/cleodius · 2 pointsr/hometheater

5.1 is better if you watch a lot of tv/movies and play a lot of games, but a 2.0/2.1 would be better if you mainly listen to music. Either way, you can't go wrong if you start with just a 2.0 system because you can always upgrade later. I don't know much about floor standers, but I know a few good bookshelf speakers.

Here is a good setup I recommend:

> Earth shattering bass please.

We can easily do that for $1k. If you don't care too much about having it sound great you can get Pioneer speakers, an Onkyo receiver, and two BIC subwoofers. Total cost is about $700. You could get more of those Pioneer speakers if you want surround sound, or a third subwoofer for even more bass and still stay under $1k.

For better sound quality get a single subwoofer from Rhythmik or SVS. The downside is that you'll have chest thumping bass instead of earth shattering. You could also get a Cerwin Vega sub which would be a good compromise between sound quality and power.

If you're set on the receiver, a pair of Bic DV84 for $140 each or a pair of Polk Monitor 60s for $160 each. Bic DV62CLRS center for $100 and DV62si for the rear at $110 for the pair. Bic F12 sub for $185. Maybe a pair of Fluance bookshelves for $180 a pair, and Bipolar for the for $200 for the rear, then find a center, hard to beat the bic for the price as far as a sub though. The Bic 84s, and Monitor 60s stand up pretty well to heavy bass, the F12 will add the necessary kick in the balls.

Not sure why you x-posted this to audiophile, with that budget the only way will get audiophile grade is if you can find the score of the century on craigslist.

Yes and yes. I was using design acoustic ps-10's with a big boomy sub woofer before and I really liked the sound. But some stuff was just too much bass. Basically any modern record. I found a cheap pair of Large Advents that I'm in the process of restoring. So I sold off the bookshelves and boomy sub. I'm missing some of the deep notes, but really enjoying the balance of the Advents. Much more "musical" and "punchy". I'd love something in between where I can get the best of both worlds.

u/applevinegar · 2 pointsr/audiophile

That's quite a broad request... I think you should start with a stereo setup and move on from there. Years of marketing might have you convinced that it's better to have multiple channels but that's just bs. A serious stereo gives you plenty of imaging and with a decent sub your engagement will skyrocket. If you often watch movies with lots of people you can add a center channel later, but to start things off, don't overshoot: just get a multichannel capable receiver and upgrade later.
You read right, Polk speakers are pretty much crap nowadays, all looks and no substance.

I'm not an expert on A/V receivers but that model should work fine as it seems to have enough power and some room correction and bass management.

Starting with the sub, I wouldn't get anything less than a $500 HSU VTF2. You could, however, decide to spend less on the sub and more on the speakers, in which case you could get a BIC F12. I have no direct experience with it but it's highly regarded as a budget sub. I personally suggest getting the higher quality one though.

On to the speakers, the cheaper options I can suggest are either a pair of Zensor 3s or ELAC B6; if you decide to go with the BIC, you can reach for a pair of Monitor Audio Siver.

Add a speaker stand such as this one, og a height that makes the speaker's tweeter is in line with your ears at the listening position.

When getting a sub, bookshelf speakers will grant you a lot more quality for the dollar. These two examples can reach low enough frequencies to allow you to set the crossover point at a decently low 60-70Hz, while you can place the sub in an optimal position for your room.

If that sub is too large for the mobility you want, you could go with this, which is quite a bit smaller.

All that (with the F12) will be around $525.

Don't forget some good quality speaker wire and banana plugs make life easier if you want to move it easily.

Never buy an HTIB (home theater in a box). They use the cheapest and crappiest receivers that exist. The setup I linked would be much higher quality than getting a system like that. It is a very low budget, if you are able to go up you can improve parts.

I didn't include the blu ray player. You are getting a PS4 which will be able to do that so I suggest just going with that.

Edit: If this is too much, let me know and I can cut it down to something else. If you can stretch it to get this, I highly recommend it. This setup would be killer and much better than a lot of things at this price range.

Hello, I am looking to power a pair of headphones through my computer via USB, as well as a subwoofer and passive speakers.

I have been browsing and found that the ELAC EA101EQ-G seemed to fit all these categories but I want to make sure that there isn't anything I might be missing that will do the job just as good.

Please note that this will be all for a computer desk setup and not a living room experience. So compact is also key here as well. The speakers I'm going to be powering are the ELAC Uni-fi UB5, the subwoofer is a
BIC America F12 12-Inch 475-Watt and the Headphones are the Massdrop Sennheiser HD6XX. Thanks in advance!

u/Bonjourmate · 1 pointr/audiophile

> a Bic America subwoofer.

How do you like that sub? I was planning on using it for my home theater. Likely won't be the end-all be-all, but it seemed a good starting place.

EDIT: Said amp, but meant sub. Sleepy, I guess.

u/notavalidsource · 1 pointr/audiophile

My Onkyo TX-8020 receiver is no longer working (my stupid mistake) and I am looking for a decent replacement. $200-300 is my budget, I suppose. I currently have a pair of Polk TSi100 bookshelf speakers and a BIC F12 sub. I do intend on upgrading in the future, but most likely not to 5.1, so I'll be replacing the speakers first. Any suggestions on a decent receiver?

edit: I have my receiver connected to my comp via an ASUS Essence STX sound card. I don't know if this would influence anything at all.

u/el_cabinet · 1 pointr/audiophile

Awesome, thank you. That was one of the receivers i was already considering. Do I need to purchase any sort of DAC? The subwoofer I'm looking it to is this one, as it's been suggested around the comments a few times. Would you recommend it? It appears to have a high pass filter.

Get the 12". If you really want something loud and can afford it, go for this sub http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0015A8Y5M/

u/bradAHA · 1 pointr/hometheater

I'd definitely do two bookshelves and a sub instead of two towers. For a receiver, an Onkyo NR-636 is probably the cheapest new receiver that'll do everything you want. Better to apply as much budget to speakers as possible. Get a Bic America F12 for a sub, and some Chane Loudspeakers. Depending on whether you get towers or bookshelves, you're either at $800 or $1050. Fluance XL7F Towers and HTD Level 3 bookshelves are within your budget as well.

u/AVconnoisseur · 1 pointr/BudgetAudiophile
  • I'd go with either the receiver you said, or this one, which will do the same stuff and is on sale. Accesories4Less has a sketchy name but they're fantastic and I've bought a bunch of stuff there (including that receiver).

  • Satellites are fine, those don't matter as much so the COVO's are good.

  • I can't tell what subwoofer that is, I know this one is good, and so is the Dayton, which I actually have and like.

  • The ELAC's are good, just be aware that they are pretty big (look at dimensions and figure out if they're ok for you).

  • I would NOT recommend getting that center if you get the ELAC's, the ELAC's have 6.5" woofers and that center has 4" woofers. You want a center that matches the left and right, and that center is both smaller and won't match the sound signature of the left and rights.

  • I'd get the Denon receiver and Dayton sub, then take the savings and put it towards a matching center (ELAC C6.2, $280).

Hello!

I am looking for a subwoofer (and eventually speakers) for a 2.1 system. I’m looking to spend under $1000 for everything.

Right now I’m using some KEFs from the late 70s and a Polk 10 inch subwoofer. The KEFs still sound OK, but are old. The sub is not good.

I’m driving the speakers with my vintage Sansui G-6000 rated at 65wpc RMS.

I only use my system for music. I listen to a lot of hip-hop, rock, metal, jazz, and electronic music. I only like to add extra bass when I’m listening to newer trap style hip-hop, otherwise I like a “normal” frequency response.

For sub’s I’m considering:

JBL Sealed 10 inch

Dayton 10 inch

BIC F12

I am also very much open to hearing other subwoofer options…

For speakers I’m considering:

Polk Audio RTI A7s

Klipsch R-28Fs

I am also very much open to hearing other speaker options…

I am pretty new to all of this, so please try to be understanding. I appreciate any advice.

Thanks!

Sweet little integrated. Lots of inputs and a sub output. Should work great with all this.

u/Joebilly · 1 pointr/hometheater

Unless you have a very small room, I would not get the package, instead buying each component individually and switching out the sub for a BIC F12.

Cost:
Floorstanders - $260, Bookshelves - $130, Center - $100, BIC F12 sub - $200 (sometimes on sale for $175), which is $690 total, or $60 more than that set.

For that extra $60, you'll get much better frequency response (down to 25 Hz instead of 38 Hz) and much more output (12" vs 8" woofer, 150W vs 100W).

The other speakers are probably good (have only heard the impressive first gen), just the sub is not worth your money.

As for a receiver, you said you're willing to spend $500-1000, which is overkill. Get a Denon 2112 for $465 and be really happy. Make sure it has the input(s) that you'll want.

u/ccobb123 · 1 pointr/hometheater

Try these settings that Fairchild, a forum member, posted up on AVSforums. He calibrated it using professional tools for a darker room, so it might work for you. Otherwise, perusing/searching the forums should net you some more settings that worked for other people.

Best Buy has excellent deals on the Denon 1613/1713/1913 speakers right now. They’re all on clearance or in excellent condition as open box items. The Denon 1713, for example, I was able to buy for 199 before taxes (amazon still shows it as 378.99).

To check online stock, do the following:

Go to the store locator -> Enter zip/address -> click on the stores that are closest to you within the search results -> for each individual store website, click “Open Box and Clearance Items” on the left side -> Shop this store (in blue) -> Under “Shop Best Buy” (left side pane), click “Audio & MP3” -> Under Narrow your results, choose Denon as your brand.

Hopefully you’ll find some good sales.

Speakers.
I’ve thought about the Pioneer SP BS-22 and the Polk 30s. You really can’t go wrong with either, but you just missed a sale where the Pioneers were going for $70.

Depending on what L/Rs you go with, you’d get the matching center channel from their respective manufacturers.

Subs, for our budget, the consensus seems to be the Bic America F12, but others have stated that a better alternative may be the Polk Audio PSW505.

The gist, I think, was that the Polks would perform better if you listen to a lot of music.

Anyways, that’s where I am with my research. My goal is to save as much money as I can, but to spend when necessary to fulfill my needs. I hope that television works out for you. We’ve loved ours and the calibration went a long way. Happy shopping!

u/Mkilbride · 1 pointr/audiophile

I have a Denon 1312. It's a small room. I recently decided to upgrade my budget form 300$ to 500$. Previously I had Energy Take RC Micro's, fairly good and I enjoyed them, however, most of the set randomly died on me, I tried everything, and can't figure out why. So I want a replacement. I paid 250$ for em, 3 years ago, however now, on ehre I have been getting suggestions and such, I was thinking of perhaps upgrading my budget.

My room is however small, so floor-standing won't work. I suppose I'll have to wall-mount them. Preferably at the corners of my walls so I could angle them downwards.

This is for a Desktop PC, so I'll be sitting close. Closer to one side of the room, that is. The JBL's have been recommended, with keeping my price range within 200$. 2 40's for my mains, 2 30's for my rears, and a 20 for my Center. Still, googling doesn't say fair things about these and I worry they'd be a downgrade from my RC Micros. The Infinity Primus are about double the price, as instead of 60$ for a pair, it's 65-75$ for a single. Reviews of those however, are stellar. So I might be willing to upgrade my budget for that.

Like grabbing 4x of these: http://www.crutchfield.com/p_108P163BK/Infinity-Primus-P163.html?tp=186 for 300$. Leaving enough for a center. I already have a F12 BiC Subwoofer: http://www.amazon.com/BIC-America-F12-475-Watt-Subwoofer/dp/B0015A8Y5M

Far to big for my room, but it was priced right.

I know my Denon 1312 is pretty lowend, but I don't really have it in the budget to be going for a new one, at the moment. Stretching the budget to 500$ is already more than I wanted, but audio is important to me in my gaming. However I also found used pair of RC Micro for 200$. Which I am considering, because I didn't have to many problems with them, they sounded great to me, of course, until they didn't and died. So while it seems almost perfect(With an upgraded receiver, I could even do 7.1, re-using my two still working Micro's from this set), I am wary since my others died after just 3 years. Fluke, I know, the used set I buy could last 20, but still.

Also a worry that my current receiver couldn't really make use of such fine speakers.

u/dorekk · 1 pointr/battlestations

Two setups you could use to get a subwoofer with those Mackies:

  1. Pair them with a USB audio interface (an inexpensive one is the Lexicon Alpha) and this Monoprice subwoofer: http://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=605999. USB to interface, TRS cables from interface to sub, TRS cables to Mackies.

  2. Pair them with, say, the Bic F12: http://www.amazon.com/BIC-America-F12-475-Watt-Subwoofer/dp/B0015A8Y5M and a Schiit Sys: http://schiit.com/products/sys. 3.5mm to RCA cable from your PC to Sys, then RCA cables to the Bic and Mackies using a splitter. Adjust the balance between the speakers and the sub, then use the Sys to control volume.

I think setup 1 is easier.

u/AssOrTheCrotch · 1 pointr/audiophile

Ok, I'm new to this, so bear with me. I am trying to make this as budget as possible but still have a good system.

I would like to keep the setup around $300. I really only need a subwoofer and a couple desktop monitors. I am thinking a Bic America F12 ($200) and the [Micca PB42X] (http://www.amazon.com/Micca-PB42X-Powered-Bookshelf-Speakers/dp/B00NXAEPDC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1422576240&sr=8-1&keywords=micca+pb42x+powered+speakers)'s ($100/pair).

Since they're both powered I wouldn't need an amp/DAC (not until I can afford them later for my headphones). I will be running all of these off of my computer's motherboard outputs. So my main question is: What do I need to set them up and how should I do it? I assume I would just get a 1/8" to RCA cable and plug that into the F12, then plug two RCA cables from the F12 output to the monitors' inputs. If this is correct, would I plug the 1/8" end into the computer output labeled Center? Would it be easier to go 1/8" to 1/8" from the computer output to the 1/8" input on the F12?

Thanks! And sorry if this is the wrong place to post this.

u/BartyB · 1 pointr/Zeos

Hi Zeos thank you so much for the guide! I am someone that knew nothing about starting up a good sound system and you have helped me tremendously. I am wondering if you can explain this one thing to me that I do not understand. I am coming down to the final debate of what receiver to get and I cannot choose between these two...

This one and getting the refurbished one: (I am always skeptical about used stuff and rarely never get refurbished but thanks to your guide saying refurbished is not so bad I am open to it.)
http://www.amazon.com/Denon-AVR-S700W-7-2-Channel-Receiver-Bluetooth/dp/B00JRTMOGS/ref=cm_cd_ql_qh_dp_t

Or this one and getting it brand new:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CALM12W/ref=ox_sc_act_title_5?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=AAK72K4OIWDXL

The S700W is a lot cheaper and from what I think I am understanding even better, while the X3000 is a few hundred dollars more and they both seem to have pretty much have the same features.. Is there something that I am not seeing and or not understanding why one might be better than the other? Which one do you suggest? I am only trying to start my sound system and for now it will only be used in my bedroom (only going to start with a 3.1) but I do want it future proof and be able to expand which is why I am going with a 7.2. So when I do move it out to a living room I will be able to add speakers. But I know anything will be better than the Philips sound bar I have now...

Here is the rest of the equipment I picked out:

Speakers: Micca MB42X Bookshelf Speakers and the matching center speaker.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00E7H8GG2/ref=ox_sc_act_title_6?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=AFKH6OU9WWNFS

Subwoofer: BIC America F12 12-Inch 475-Watt Front Firing Powered Subwoofer

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0015A8Y5M/ref=ox_sc_act_title_4?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER

and then for wire I just figured the AmazonBasics 16-Gauge Speaker Wire..

Just throwing out all the items I plan on starting with to see what you think and open to suggestions because I am very un-knowledgeable with sound systems. This might be a stupid question but is there a difference between a used receiver and a refurbished receiver?

Thank you again :)

I just did a setup similar to this for my basement (except I went with cheaper Daytons for surrounds so I could experiment with 7.1). I have to say, these BICs are absolutely fantastic for the money, and the whole system really came alive after running Audyssey.

Upstairs I have the Pioneer FS52/C22/BS22 setup, and the BICs are far better in my opinion. That Pioneer setup gets recommended a lot as a good entry-level setup, but in my opinion it just isn't that fantastic. The FS52 towers are great for music, but the center is lackluster and sounds "empty" in comparison for movies.

For an AVR you ideally want a normal subwoofer like this one, they're just a subwoofer instead of being an entire speaker system.

Sounds like the 305's would fit the bill then, you may have to hang them, but for the dollar they are very good.

>Years ago, people used to be all about tweeters. Is it worthwhile having one?

Er, the tweeters on the LSR's are very good, Im not sure if you are confusing the waveguide tops on the speakers with a traditional dome tweeter. Both serve the same purpose, but the waveguide just distributes sound better than domes do at this pricepoint.

The only thing you may want with these speakers is a separate subwoofer. If you want to get one, it'll be a tight fit in the $600CDN you have to spend on the audio stuff.

This would probably work, but would put you $50 over:

Good response down to about 30Hz, which should compliment the LSR's nicely in your small room though if you can spend a bit more, the F12's are a bit better:

I think I actually have a decent idea on what I might do in order to leverage all of my existing speakers:

Home Theater:

  • Upgrade my sub to the BIC 12 (per Zeos recommendations)
  • Add upgraded Bookshelf Speakers (I'm liking the HDT Level 2's for my price range coupled with the center)
  • Move my Micca MB42x to Surround

And in order to not waste my current speakers, I'm planning to also upgrade my Desktop Computer Setup:

  • Move my Klipsch sub to my desktop
  • Move my Micca MB42x-c to my Desktop
  • Buy another Micca MB42x-c to complete a 2.1 setup
  • Add an SMSL Amp

Atmos is a configuration that uses a traditional surround sound setup (5.1 or 7.1) in addition to speakers in the ceiling. There are significant technical details that are different, but all you need to know is that it uses in-ceiling speakers.

Take a look at this site https://www.dolby.com/us/en/speaker-setup-guides/index.html. It will give you some info on what the speaker setup differences between traditional surround setups (5.1, 7.1) and atmos setups (5.1.X or 7.1.X) are. The speakers you have right now would ONLY be used for the in-ceiling speakers (the .X part of the setup).

If you want a 5.1.4 setup (5.1.4 overhead speaker setup in the guide I linked), which takes advantage of 4 of your in-ceiling speakers, it's possible on your budget, but obviously won't be the best around.

Subwoofer.

This fits into you budget of $500 receiver, $200 on speakers, and $200 on subwoofer. It is pretty much the lowest quality speakers/subwoofer you can get that are still respectable. But you will probably be just fine with it.

You'll also need speaker wire, subwoofer cable, etc., which will run you another $75ish maybe.

Awesome! Thanks for the tips! Unfortunately, I went ahead and already purchased those Edifier speakers before reading your response (not to worry though, they'll become hand-me-downs to a "non-audiophile" eventually). So it seems that passive bookshelf speakers are the way to go. I mainly wanted to avoid them out of a silly fear of not knowing what cables to use and how to connect them. But in the long term, I think I'll just bite the bullet and figure it out.

In regards to the sub, I actually went and bought a BIC F-12 since it only cost a tiny bit more, had a bit more power, and was also highly rated. The only cable I bought for this was a subwoofer cable. I hope I made an OK choice for this at least.

If you don't mind answering more questions (mainly about the home theater suggestion):

Assuming I am staying with the powered Edifiers for awhile. Would the home theater receiver still be beneficial in the short term? What cables (yeah... I'm still afraid of the cables for no particular reason) would I need to complete this setup? At this point, I wouldn't mind buying the home theater you linked if it would be a better overall choice over the SMSL Q5 Pro/AD18. I can make space if necessary.

u/JUGGERNAUT0014 · 1 pointr/Zeos

Hey Zeos! I want to thank you so much for your guide. I just started looking at making a home theater setup yesterday for the very first time and it was pretty daunting at first. After reading through your posts and several others at /r/hometheater I have it narrowed down to a couple of options and would appreciate some advice on the selections I've made. I apologize for the long post but I want to make sure I make the most informed decisions for my first home theater purchase.

I just purchased the 65" Samsung JS8500 and I have an Xbox One that will be my main bluray player for now with a focus on movies / games.

Through my research last night and going through your suggestions at the top of this thread, I've chosen the Denon AVR-S510BT.

My question is in regards to speakers. Last night I had decided on the Micca MB42X Bookshelf Speakers with the accompanying Center since it's my first system and I was thinking of trying out something cheaper for an intro setup which would be better than just my TV speakers.

Whenever I get into a new hobby I tend to start thinking of an intro setup and get sucked into the nice expensive parts because I believe in "buy once cry once". I'd hate to get the Micca's and then a year later want to upgrade them to something nicer anyways when I could have just spent a bit more and got something that would have lasted me longer.

edit after more reading and watching your videos I see you recommending the Elacs quite a bit, I know you mentioned they would be great for music and I loved how they sounded, is this the case with movies and games as well? My budget is pretty open if it's for the right items and I can afford the Elac 6.5"s or something in that similar price range like the HTD Level3's (loved that sound demo too) if they would really make the whole setup shine and last me for years to come.

If I do end up choosing more expensive speakers and could only purchase one or the other to start with, would you recommend a Center speaker or a Subwoofer like the BIC America F12?

Thank you so much in advance, I appreciate all the time you've taken to write up these guides and answer questions.

u/avnerd33 · 1 pointr/hometheater

In your shoes i would suggest doing a 2.0 or a 2.1 if you can squeeze a little more juice out of your wallet. Explanation: a 2.0/ 2.1 will give you a far better sound quality with a dedicated amp/receiver and external speakers rather than in all in one sound bar type unit. although you don't crank your system sound quality is important and will be better out of this set up too. And lastly you then have the availability to upgrade and expand your system later on. I know these were posted once but here why.

http://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-SP-FS52-LR-Designed-standing-Loudspeaker/dp/B008NCD2S4 great price point, great sound quality. I think the rest of this sub would agree these are a fantastic speaker for the price. They are rear ported, the closer to the wall the more low end you will get from them.

http://www.amazon.com/Denon-AVR-S500BT-Receiver-Capability-Bluetooth/dp/B00JR6GJLW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1415645951&sr=8-1&keywords=AVR-S500BT Big fan of denon, they make great receivers starting from the bottom all the way to high end. built in bluetooth, powerful enough to handle a slightly bigger speaker if you want to upgrade later

http://www.amazon.com/BIC-America-F12-475-Watt-Subwoofer/dp/B0015A8Y5M If you have the money or the want, this is a great subwoofer for the money. Fairly clean, pretty crisp, not real muddy.

Anyways while I'm here....

The specs on that Polk aren't realistic. I'd personally rather have one of the Daytons vs one of the Polks. BUT for just a tad more than that Polk you can buy TWO Daytons! Stereo Subs! If you'd rather stick to a single unit I'd recommend the BIC-F12

those Arenas should give you plenty loud, I can make my Martin Logan bookshelf speakers fill the house.
https://www.amazon.com/BIC-America-F12-475-Watt-Subwoofer/dp/B0015A8Y5M this sub goes deeper (with good volume) than any in its price range and many people speak highly of it. I don't know much about the 2 subs you are looking at but most subs like these have a significant fall off in volume at lower frequencies and anything under 10" is gonna feel pretty weak out side of a limited sweet spot.

I just got this https://www.amazon.com/SVS-SB12-NSD-400-watt-Controlled-Subwoofer/dp/B009F8Y7SO and couldn't be happier, it used to sell for around $600 but new versions have come out. The BIC I linked or any ported unit from SVS and HSU will typically give more volume than the sealed sub I chose which would be to your liking. The SVS and HSU are kind of considered entry level "enthusiast" subs and they are better than the BIC, but if you like house pounding sound The BIC will get you there.

So just snagged the JBL LSR308 to replace my fluance signature series passive powered bookshelfs that were hooked up to an AVR via speaker wire and the sub via coax .

They came with foam isolation blocks and xlr cables all for 200 for the whole set. Pretty dope!

Anyway I understood it all until I realized I could only hookup the speakers to my pc (using 1/4inch to aux splitter) and had no idea what to do with the (bic america f12 subwoofer)

So how do I hookup my bic america f12 sub to my jbl lsr305's? Coax to aux cable and plug that into the sub input on my mobo? Do I need a audio interface with a l/r and sub channel if they even make those. Help and thanks in advance!

Those polk monitors are hard to beat for the price. I think they sound great. I would definitely avoid getting that sub though. I do think you will want a sub though, especially if you are going to be using the system for movies mainly. The monitors will have a lot to be desired on the low end.

How big is your room, and how will you be using the speakers(TV, Movies, Gaming, Music, ect.)? This sub is great for the money. I think it blows any other HT subs at the price point away.

A few questions I have:

  • Are the Fluance dedicated rear speakers worth the extra 50 bucks over 4 of the Micca bookshelf speakers?

  • Is the Micca center speaker a recommended speaker? I didn't see it listed in the OP, but I found it while searching through amazon, and figured that matching the front two speakers was a good idea.

  • I was also looking into the Denon E300, but I don't see any advantages over the S500BT - any advice?

  • What other things will I need to complete this system? Some speaker cable for sure, do I need a sub cord or any banana plugs? It doesn't look the S500 uses plugs, but I figured I would ask.

Really depends on where you are comfortable with your budget ending up. I think the next step up would be using the receiver I linked above with 2 of the Pioneer SP-FS52 floorstanding speakers. Total without taxes or shipping (including the receiver) would be about $440. You can use the rest of your budget for some speaker wire, and a surge protector.

When you're ready to upgrade, you can get the Pioneer SP-BS22 bookshelf speakers, the Pioneer SP-C22 center channel, and a decent budget subwoofer such as the Dayton Audio SUB-1200 or the BIC America F12.

Alrighty I looked at the Zeos buying guide. The media room is 11x10 with 9ft ceilings. Here's what I've picked out and it looks like I'll be able to be beat or match Sonos' pricing.

Receiver - AVRS530BT (https://www.amazon.ca/Denon-Audio-Component-Receiver-AVRS530BT/dp/B06XYD1RZ3/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1512081630&sr=8-1&keywords=denon+receiver)

Left / Right - ELAC B6 6.5" (https://www.amazon.ca/Debut-Bookshelf-Speakers-Andrew-Jones/dp/B014GSEQ06/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1512081995&sr=8-2&keywords=elac%2Bb5&th=1)

On the above, I'm not sure about sizing. What would be difference between 4", 5" and 6.5"?

Center - ELAC C5 (https://www.amazon.ca/Debut-Center-Speaker-Andrew-Jones/dp/B014GSEQWE/ref=sr_1_4?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1512082107&sr=1-4&keywords=elac+debut)

On the above, do I need 1 or 2 of these? I'm not sure if I'll be mounting or keeping it on stands.

Sub - BIC America F12 12" (https://www.amazon.com/BIC-America-F12-475-Watt-Subwoofer/dp/B0015A8Y5M/ref=as_li_ss_tl?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1462201214&sr=1-26&keywords=subwoofer&linkCode=sl1&tag=zeos-20&linkId=12c7dd989108e560a1c31e4716134e84)

Unsure about sizing / power of this sub and whether it necessitates 2? I'm not a HUGE sub person (been living in a condo for a while but now in a single detached) but I do like "feeling" the booms, crashes etc. Second, can you confirm receiver will be able to power this?

Should be it! Let me know!

u/cronson · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

Here's what i think you should do. 1. Buy a relatively inexpensive sound card with optical output like this. 2. Buy really, any good name brand receiver (Sony, Denon, Pioneer) either new or used (if you go used, you could save tons). 3. Buy any sub you want, again new or used.

If I were doing this, I'd comb Craigslist. I routinely see guys selling 5 to 10 year old Denon's that were $1000 for $100 used. The sound quality on those receivers is phenomenal and will destroy a new $250 Pioneer or Sony. Likewise, scope for subs. For some reason everyone and their mom is always selling Polk subs on my Craigslist. They're not bad. I went with this.

But yeah a sound card with optical will make hooking it all up waaaaay easier and sound better.

Two part question. (This setup will be for a computer in a medium sized bedroom.)

  1. I am looking at getting a pair of JBL LSR305s. I was wondering if this sub http://www.amazon.com/BIC-America-F12-475-Watt-Subwoofer/dp/B0015A8Y5M/ref=sr_1_cc_1?s=aps&ie=UTF8&qid=1463455626&sr=1-1-catcorr&keywords=bic+america+f12 would pair well with them? And yes I know that's a lot of bass.

  2. Whats the best way to hook these up to my computer with minimal noise? I have this motherboard: http://www.asrock.com/mb/intel/z97%20extreme3/ and no other sound card. I would like to not have to use anything expensive, ideally just some cables.

That's a tough budget since you're starting with some pretty bassy speakers to begin with - I've never heard the C-Notes, but they're supposed to play pretty strongly all the way down to 43 Hz. There are plenty of things on the market sold as subwoofers which can't reach below 40 Hz.

If you had smaller main speakers, I might suggest the Polk PSW10. I own one, and to be absolutely clear, it's fairly terrible. Still, it's probably the best subwoofer available for less than $200. Unfortunately, it pretty much bottoms out at 40 Hz; you might get a tiny bit lower with room gain, and it can throw marginally more power at the bass notes than your bookshelf speakers can, but ultimately you won't get much improvement.

The next step up is probably the BIC F12. At more than double your budget, it's the cheapest subwoofer I've ever seen someone recommend without qualifiers. They don't seem to publish an f3 (again, sketchy), but reviews suggest that it can go fairly low, and it's got a decent amount of power.

There's not much else to recommend until you have at least $300 to spend. However, once you hit that threshold, there are a ton of options, some which have really spectacular performance. If I were you, I'd carry on with just the C-Notes and save up for a while, and then look at getting a Dayton 10" Reference kit with the recommended SPA-250 amplifier, or an HSU VTF-1 Mk3.

u/LoveRecklessly · 1 pointr/Chromecast

My current setup is just a quick and dirty budget (sub 1000$) system I hooked up to enjoy my music.

I bought this entry level Sony receiver, some Sony and Pioneer speakers that all hover around 100-125 watts and this bargain beauty of a subwoofer.

That subwoofer is absolutely amazing and on sale for 300$ off listing price with free shipping if you have Prime. Rich and full sound, not overpowering, good harmony.. You might really be surprised by how full of nuance the audio can be from that sub.

Overall, I'm super satisfied with what I accomplished. Especially for the price. Everything sounds good, I'm especially pleased with the sub and receiver. The speakers are so-so, they're not bad but they're not especially great, either. Good sound for good value.

As for technology.. I just have the Chromecast hooked into one of the hdmi inputs from the receiver. The receiver supports hdmi-cec (if the receiver is off and the input becomes active, it'll turn on) but I just leave it on standby (along with the subwoofer) anyway. Same result, just the power is on and the system is on sleep instead of power off.

I have the speakers and subwoofer hooked up directly to the receiver (copper for speakers, line in for sub).

The first thing is deciding what your budget is and what you want to accomplish. D'you want a 5,1 surround system? Are the acoustics of your house/apartment such that you can designate one room for audio and be able to hear the music from every other room? How are you going to be playing music? Are you gonna stream it from online? A local server/drive? D'you need your equipment to natively have wifi? Will you use an adapter? A Chromecast? For example, Sonos doesn't (yet?) offer hdmi in, are you ok with using an audio splitter/extractor? Questions like that.

500-1000$, especially if you shop around a bit, compare, read reviews etc, will get you good to great audio at bang for your buck to start off with.

Budget: Hoping to stay under $300 if I can

I have the ever popular JBL LSR305's and they're beautiful, but I'm looking to round out my setup past simply having the speakers directly plugged in. I know I'll need a DAC or something in order to get rid of the hiss the speakers get when I have them over 4, but it's an entirely new field for me and I'm getting a bit lost. As long as I have solid quality, I can get the volume up without worrying about white noise, and maybe a volume knob then that'd fit my requirements for the DAC/AMP/whatnot (I know the 305's are powered so don't need a preamp at least), doesn't have to be expensive (I've seen some very pricey systems come up), just solid for my purposes and able to block out the noise my computer might be generating in the input.

Where I'd prefer the majority of the money to go though is towards a sub, the 305's have a lovely low end but I'm big into bass heavy music, especially dub so having a dedicated subwoofer will be needed to get the boom I'm looking for. My first instinct was to look for the paired sub (The LSR 310s) But while I'm sure it sounds amazing it seems like I might be able to get more than enough for less, $400 is a hefty price point, though I remain tempted. I've searched through this subreddit and seen this sub suggested, but I'd like to know if anyone with 305's has a system they might vouch for, maybe have 2 or 3 options, of which I'm having difficulty finding as most of the posts I can find tend to be 2.0 setups.

Having a Sony TV has zero impact on whether you get Sony speakers.

For Pioneer, the left, right, and center speakers combine will cost you $192:

For Sony, the left, right, and center speakers combine will cost you $296:

For reference, if you wanted the floor standing options for either it will be an extra $100-150 in either case.

I will assume you will go with bookshelf speakers for now and the Sonys. That means that your AVR, speaker cable, left, right, and center channels combined come to about $500.

That leaves about $500 for a subwoofer. That is a nice chunk of change for a really nice subwoofer.

First, are you certain you want a premium subwoofer like that? Second, are you concerned that you may disturb your neighbors in an apartment building with a subwoofer?

Personally, I would save my money and get the BIC America F12. It is an absolutely excellent subwoofer for $200 and is likely already overkill for your needs:

I think you would probably want to go with the Elac Debut series speakers.

Elac B6 RL $280

Elac C5 center $180

Elac B4 surrounds $180

Either the Dayton 12 inch sub for $128 +shipping or the BIC F12 $209 for a bit more

Then check out accessories4less for a receiver

This type of plate amp is what you want if you are building the sub and want to install the amp in the sub box itself. This technique is what commercially-built subs will do.

If you want the amp in a separate box from the sub, then this type of amp is what you want.

The reason why car amps are cheap is because they have a high-current 12V power-supply to tap into already built in the car (the battery/alternator system). The reason why home audio amps are more expensive is because they have to built that power supply into the amp itself rather than just tapping in the car.

ps. I went through this whole thing when I was in college and short on money but wanting big bass at home. Built some passive (no amplifier) subs powered off boom boxes or compact systems (not enough current in those amps for decent results) and then receivers (decent results if the receiver has enough juice). Later just got a commercially-built sub. Decent ones are available pretty affordably nowadays but I'm glad I went through the learning process. I understand audio tradeoffs much better because of it.

Whats your budget?

So I have BIC F12 and its a monster. Its kind of sloppy, kind of muddy but holy hell does it rattle the walls. Best bang for your buck for that theater experience.

Lower budget this polk is pretty good.

A 2.1 system made of individual components (not a theater-in-a-box) will still knock your socks off if you're used to a soundbar. I think high quality audio is more immersive over mediocre surround sound anyways.

I went for maximum bang for the buck with my setup, sound quality improves drastically with every dollar spent up to a point. The return gets marginal once you soend more than $300 on a receiver, $150 on bookshelf speakers, and $200 on a subwoofer.

I'd recommend the following parts for a good setup and I listed some budget options you could substitute without losing too much quality:

Receiver: Yamaha RX-V377 or RX-V375 (what I have). They're $250 and $220 respectively (the 375 is usually $200) and they both have enough HDMI inputs for any normal person. The 377 supports 4K passthrough so it may be more future proof but I don't think 4K will catch on (just like 3D) since the benefits are marginal at typical viewing distances.

Speakers: Pioneer SP-BS22-LR's (what I have) or Micca MB42X's. Both are frequently on sale for $80-100 and they both sound awesome. If you're on a budget, the Dayton B652's are legendary for the the price ($40). They changed (cheapened) the design and ruined it last year but quickly brought the original design back. They fixed their mistake but they could ruin it again at any time.

Subwoofer: Bic F12 America (what I have). It's $190 but it will ruin your perception of every subwoofer you've ever owned. Once you experience crisp, clear bass you can never go back to over amplified 6" "woofers" like you get with a soundbars or the plastic junk that comes in boxed 5.1 kits. If you're on a budget, the Monoprice 12" sub is $108 and is supposed to be the absolute minimum you can spend to get something acceptable.

Ancilliaries: Buy your cables from Amazon (Amazon Basics brand) or Monoprice but I highly recommend this $9, paintable cable management kit and an afternoon of patience. Your wires will be invisible and your sound system will make your friends jealous.
