In my humble opinion, downloading mkv files and converting them to avi is way too much work. Options:

  • try emule / Usenet service to find old films in avi format
  • tell your friend to buy any one of a million cheap players that will allow them to play mkv files or stream to their TV directly. Using a cheap Amazon stick or a Roku media player they could stream from a laptop to Plex app. Using a Google Chromecast they could stream directly from VLC on their laptop or use Plex. If they just want to play files straight off an SD card or usb device there are other options available for super super cheap. Check out Amazon for Android players. A quick search through this forum will throw up a lot of options and reviews and FAQs.
  • tell them to buy Black Hawk Down on DVD for £1.50. You can probably find it even cheaper in a local shop.
