This one from Amazon It was like $6 the last time I bought one and came with some tracing paper and gridded pages towards the back. I just covered the front with stickers.

Good post.

Maybe a good direction to take this thread would be the what can I get a lot of for cheap? direction.

Like stack_cats said, you can get printer paper reams and be set for a while.

Sketch books for practice?

  • Blackbooks are mid priced. Cool to have $6 bucks at Walmart 192 pages. Not sure about the weight.
  • Moleskins cost just as much but are generally smaller. More marketing dollars, less materials. Can't even find out how many pages they have.
  • Office Depot Sketchbook decent weight, $8 bucks 100 pages. I got one of these cause Office Depot is right next to work and the day I decided to start doing this stuff, I just walked over there and picked up random shit. I have almost filled the whole book, font-to-back, and I like it. Little bleeding, and the wire bound spine makes it easier to write near on all of the page than a more traditional book.
  • Dickblick.com has a big list of sketchbooks that I know nothing about. Some options in here are probably better.

As far as non-sketchbook writing.. I keep boxes from ordering things online and flatten them out. That's fun. Paper grocery bags work too. A big sheet of thin plywood is like $25 bucks and you can write on that forever. I've heard water on an old chalkboard is great practice too.
