Acer Nitro 5 was $599 last Black Friday at Best Buy. I bought one and upgraded to a 120Hz screen. It's $70 on Amazon right now and it works on G3-G5-G7.

I own the G3 with those exact specs, yes it is good but I recommend you upgrade to 16GB ram because 8GB is starting to become dated especially after I updated to Windows 1903 to use Xbox gamepass. I basically can't have a web browser with a single tab in the background because it throws off performance that much in games that use a lot of RAM like Monster Hunter World. The screen isn't really that good either it's 57% SRGB and for games with a lot of dark colors I'm forced to turning the in-game brightness all the way up which makes bright colors washed out and the dark ones just barely distinguishable. If you're up for it or can get someone else to do it I highly recommend you swap out the panel. This panel is pretty well recommended for Dell G3/5/7 laptop users because you can still use your brightness controls on it unlike other panels. It's much brighter and has a color accuracy of 100% SRGB and 89% Adobe RGB. I recommend you undervolt the CPU too it can get really hot in demanding games and easily go 90C+ and start thermal throttling. I undervolted mine to -0.160v and it drops the temperatures by at least 10C on full load so it doesn't thermal throttle anymore and power throttles a lot less.

Also whatever you do stay away from Dell Power Manager control app. I tried using it to limit my battery charge to 90% so the battery would last longer and now the machine can't hold a charge at all or recognize my AC adapter. I've tried every method except bios and chipset update because the battery is at 0% now and won't let you do it at that percentage.

Yeah, it should look similar to DRI_PRIME=1 %command% .

Yeah, if you're using the Acer Nitro 5, you can upgrade the LCD panel.

There are videos on YouTube on how to do it. It's pretty simple.

Then search the internet for the MSI laptop that uses this panel an there should be a color correction profile for download. If you cannot find it, let me know and I'll upload mine.

Thanks, man. I ended up getting this one yesterday, which seems to be the same thing:

I installed this panel. There are youtube videos with instructions. Basically you carefully pry the bezzle off, undo 4 small screws, and undo a connector. Reverse those steps with the new panel and boom, you've got a 120hz panel with 8-bit color depth and much higher brightness. I would highly recommend, the factory panels on these things are garbage unless you lucked out and got an AUO panel instead of the normal LG panel.

I have this laptop and it's awesome at this price especially with the upgrades. If the buyer wants to upgrade the screen this one is 120hz, allows brightness control and seems to have better colors. It was real easy to install to. Good luck with the sale

Would this work?

u/chasemanwew · 2 pointsr/techsupport

i'm a bit late on this but you could buy a 120hz panel and put it in the laptop, should be a pretty easy upgrade, maybe 5-10 minutes. this one is compatible with the nitro 5.

The N156HHE-GA1 94% NTSC , TN, 120hz, 3ms response time; will work as a replacement alternative to B156HAN01.2 .

I have the same model only I paid a little less. The gaming experience is like night and day I swear it feels like a brand new laptop. The colors are much better and the screen is more vibrant, you can tell this is a high quality display. Oh and another thing I forgot to mention is that you will have to set a custom resolution to 120hz using the CRU (custom resolution utility) because the Intel custom resolution tool doesn't work. Just set it to 1080p 120hz, reboot, and you'll never have to touch it again. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CWSWX4Q/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_tRMTCbEG5GADH

Could you share some pictures of your swap?

Also, here's a link to that replacement panel: https://www.amazon.com/Screen-Display-N156HHE-GA1-7RG-078US-Leopard/dp/B07CWSWX4Q

I heard this one is good. $63. 120 hz. Better colors, but its a TN panel so viewing angles are worse than an IPS panel. I heard that this one lets you change brightness, but not sure. 300 nits which I'd certainly appreciate since mine (2018) is below 250 nits.

Your main choices seem to be the Chi Mei N156HHE-GA1 Panel which is what I just mentioned above. Or the AUO B156HTN05.2 Panel which has no brightness control, worse colors, is difficult to find, also a TN panel. It goes up to 400 nits which is nice, but again you can't turn in down. At night 250 nits can be a lot so unless I was using it only during the day I'd go with the Chi Mei.

Comparison.

Unfortunately I have not seen a 120 hz IPS panel for the Dell G7. Otherwise I would've replaced it myself ages ago. Hopefully another commentor know about one, but for now those are your options.

About 60$! Here’s the link. Only problem is the screen needs to be compatible with your laptop. I have a Acer Predator Helios 300 so this is the one that works for me.
