I am going to jump in and point out that the RAF Bomber Command was throwing away the lives of crews by performing daylight operations during that time. Look up Bomber Command as a starting point. You could also look at autobiographies by Guy Gibson and Leonard Cheshire who flew operations early in the war to get an idea of what flying then was like.
