I'm a fan of the Snug silicone straws made by Boon. They're wider and thicker, and can withstand some bend without losing suction. They also have a valve at the end, preventing spillage, and a little catch to prevent being pulled out of the cup.
To clean, I use these organic cotton straw brushes (these fit perfectly) and a non-abrasive sponge to prevent scratching and possibly harboring bacteria.
I use the straws with these lids, and they do not easily fall out. In our house, 8oz vacuum insulated cups get pulled up by the straw alone and the straw stays put.
I added this to my daughter's 1st birthday wishlist and we love them!
