Hey /r/Fantasy, It's Brandon Draga! I write heroic fantasy and a little bit of steampunk. I also skateboard, play punk rock, and am your /r/Fantasy Writer of the Day - AMA!

Hey fantasists!

It's your old pal, perennial WotD Brandon Draga. Most of you know me as the author of the Four Kingdoms Saga, a heroic fantasy quartet that saw the release of its final book this past spring! Past that, however I've also been going kinda nuts with short stories this year! By year's end I'm to have shorts featured in the upcoming Dwarves of the World anthology, Booknest.eu's Art of War anthology (inexplicably alongside a lot of /r/Fantasy favourites), and my first foray into steampunk with the currently-available Brave New Girls Vol. 2 anthology, which sees all its proceeds go toward a scholarship program for the Society of Woman Engineers!

Also: to celebrate this WotD, I've marked down my first three novels to just 99 cents on the kindle store!

I'll be hither and thither throughout the day, but I'll be sure to answer every question eventually. So, without further ado: Ask me Anything!

EccentrycDragon :

Hither and thither but not yon? Poor yon. He's the best of the three lol. So

lord Draga, I'm glad to be part of your Reddit adventures. Here's my question.

I find steampunk interesting (started reading Butcher's Cinder Spires), but I'm

completely new to the genre. Give me some good recommendations?

thebonelessone :

I try to save my time spent yon when I don't have to work. I super recommend

Aeronaut's Windlass as a book in general, but that's largely because I'm a

sucker for old JRPGs. I recently read Boneshaker by Cherie Priest, which I

think is a great example of steampunk as a genre. If you like audiobooks,

it's narrated by Kate Reading and Wil Wheaton, who both naturally do stand-up

jobs.

East14thTaco :

Top 5 punk rock albums, go! To be fair, in no particular order: - Bad

Religion-Suffer - The Descendents-Milo Goes to College - Dillinger

Four-Midwestern Songs of the Americas - Black Flag-Damaged - Kid

Dynamite-Shorter, Faster, Louder

thebonelessone :

Aw dang, personal best? Let's see: The Clash - The Clash (UK) Ramones

- Brain Drain Minor Threat - First Two Seven Inches NOFX - *The War

on Errorism Bad Religion - No Control

: East14thTaco :

:

: War on Errorism is far better than most people give it credit for. Ever

: been to the Fest?

:

:: thebonelessone :

::

:: Right? NOFX can be a bit hit-or-miss but when they get passionate it's

:: like a sonic brick to the face. Never been, unfortunately. It's

:: definitely on the bucket list, though.

ashearmstrong :

Top 5 punk albums, 1-2-3-GO! Someone else beat me to it, let's see...top 5

skateboarders!

thebonelessone :

Jeez Ashe, I've legitimately been thinking on this one for about the last

hour! I don't even know if I can pin down five, so I'm going to give you my

top 5 skate video parts instead. Mike Vallely - Elementality Vol. 1*

Element Skateboards (2005) Jason Adams - Bag of Suck* Enjoi Skateboards

(2006) Daewon Song - Almost Round 3 Almost Skateboards (2003) Lance

Mountain - Extremely Sorry Flip Skateboards (2009) Steve Caballero - Ban

This* Powell Peralta (1989)

East14thTaco :

But let's see your top 5 at least.

: ashearmstrong :

:

: I haven't kept up with anyone in so long I just default to Tony Hawk. I

: barely remember anyone from back in the day. Goes for inline and bmx as

: well, though the former defaults to Fabiola da Silva. EDIT: Oh you meant

: punk albums! Okay, that I can do. Let's see here. No particular order. *

: The Misfits "Famous Monsters" The Offspring "Smash" Bad Religion

: "Recipe for Hate" The Creepshow "Run For Your Life" The Distillers

: "Coral Fang" Yeah...that feels like a solid list.

:

:: thebonelessone :

::

:: Aw dunk, Creepshow! Their first album was so good!

chadtastic112 :

Who's the most powerful character from someone else's story that would lose to

your most powerful character in a fight?

thebonelessone :

Let's see... By the end of Collapse my most powerful character is

essentially the mortal vessel for a god... I suppose there's an argument to

be made that kind of power could probably take down a lot of characters. I'd

like to think they could win in a fight against any of Zelazny's Amber

royalty.

rgraves22 :

Tell me a funny story about your brother. I've known him for years.. We met

through mIRC originally but kept in contact

thebonelessone :

I can't think of any specific examples off the top of my head, but I'm

warning everyone right now: Ryan Draga is the worst person in the world for

spoilers. The number of times he has uttered the phrase "I'm not going to

say anything, but..." and proceeded to impart major plot points to me is to

great to count.

-----------------------------------------------------------

ksvilloso :

Hi Brandon! What would you say are your writing's strengths and weaknesses?

How would you attract your intended audience? (Yes, I know, hard questions

time...)

thebonelessone :

Hey K.S.! I'd like to think that my biggest strength is character writing. I

try really hard to make sure all my characters have depth and motivations,

and I think I do a pretty okay job of it. My big weakness? I'm a notorious

pantser, and at times I end up writing myself into a bit of a corner. Part of

why I took longer on Collapse than any of the three books that preceded it

was because I got draft paralysis for days on end. I really need to get

better at outlining anything. As far as attracting an audience: do you

have any ideas?! For real, though, I try to go to as many conventions and

in-store events as I can. I've worked in retail my whole life, and the

customer service mentality has sort of become embedded in me. That said, it's

a lot easier to interact with people when I actually want to talk about the

stuff they want to buy!
