Not really. 3D printers are still at a very primitive stage of technology.

Think about today's 2D laserjet printers. Now think back to dot-matrix printers back in the 1980's: green-and-white, folding paper with feed strips (apparently called "continuous stationery"); dot-matrix fonts; ribbon cartridges. They were great for 1986, but awful by today's standards and compared to today's $100, garden-variety laser printer.

In 20 or even 10 years, when we look back on the Prusa i3 mk3s - the state of the art in consumer printing - it will seem like one of those.

For today's 3D printer developers, the priority issues, in order, are:

(1) Reducing mechanical problems - filament jams, nozzle clogs, mid-print layer shifting, Z-calibration (both height and leveling), expanded printer self-diagnostics, etc.

(2) Improving successful printing - improving bed adhesion (and detecting failures to avoid flying-spaghetti-monster failures), broader filament type compatibility, improving vertical supports and bridging, filament runout sensing and recovery, etc.

(3) Adding basic features - multi-color printing, faster and quieter printing, reducing stringing, etc.

Beyond those priorities, there are probably dozens of nice-but-unnecessary potential improvements: conductive printing for integrated electronics, automatic surface smoothing or support removal, painting... all features to work on maybe five years from now. Non-planar printing is one of those.

I print mine on a Brother laser printer. The thing has lasted well over a decade. You can buy them new for $99. Toner is about $80 when you need it (I buy toner every couple years).

I just purchased a second laser, also a Brother, this one color.

Mine is a decade older but looks like this one:

I had a similar use profile a while back and bought a little Brother monochrome machine. The Brother HL-2350DW is a slightly newer version of what I got, and it’s available for $100 on Amazon. It hits everything on your list except color and scanning, and it should last you many years of home use.

This is a similar machine that has a scanner, for $150: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0763ZCH7K/

The closest equivalent color multifunction will run you $350: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07KGXQ6WL/

I recommend going with the lowest priced machine of these 3 that you think would suit your needs. Keep in mind, too, that color machines cost more to operate.

PS I don’t work for Brother; I just happen to think they have some of the best home machines out there.

Brother makes great & cheap laser printers, these use toners as opposed to ink used by inkjet printers. Laser printers are better in every way.

Printer ink is the rip-off deal of the century, a refill sometimes costs as much as a new printer.

Brother HL-L2350DW seems to be a good recommendation that ticks all your boxes.

Probably something like the HL-2350, I buy these for my users who need desktop printers. Ink's usually about 10 a cartridge in the 8 packs, like 15 in singles, lasts ages, fairly few issues other than needing to learn the "toner reset" procedure which resets the toner counter.

Been managing a small fleet of these a few years, quite effective and low maintenance. The few times they've screwed up bad enough I can't fix it, I don't regret buying a new one.

This is the one I have. No scanner or anything but it prints duplex and works from both iOS and Android, and works with Google Cloud print.

The $100 Brother laser printer is what you want. They will run for a long time: my parents have a (very) old Brother that is 10 years old and has printed 30,000 pages. We've done nothing other than replace consumables. Toner has been replaced 13 times total - so about 2,300 pages per cartridge. I buy aftermarket, so about $20-30 each. Damn thing won't die.

Laser printers are far better for text and other document type work - it's the technology that you'll find in basically every office printer. This Brother model has USB and wifi connectivity options. Wirecutter recommends it as their budget pick.

Due to the photos and images, you might wanna go for two printers(photo-ink is expensive).

One cheap B/W laser from Brother like this one, for the documents, where you can even use aftermarket toner without thinking too much about it.

Then you can have another printer for the photo/scanner stuff.

I think this would be ideal for use on a mobile cart: https://www.amazon.com/Brother-HL-L2340DW-Monochrome-Connectivity-Replenishment/dp/B0763WDSYZ?th=1

How many pages are you printing a day on average?

The Brother HL-L2350DW printer seems to fit your needs. It is only $99.99 on Amazon, monochrome, wireless, duplex printing and it works with Google cloud print.

Then perhaps you might considered this after searching youtube for reviews.

It's not the same model, but very similar. Wireless, double sided printing, and should last you forever for just $90. In general, Brother laser printers are just solid in general, maybe shop around if that one isn't exactly what you need, but that would be my go-to for just regular printing.

u/madmax_br5 · 1 pointr/funny

PSA: get a black and white laser printer. They are like a hundred bucks new. Toner is like 40 bucks and prints a couple thousand pages. I changed my toner once in 6 years.

Here’s one similar to the one I had, also has wireless printing: https://www.amazon.com/Brother-Monochrome-HL-L2350DW-Two-Sided-Replenishment/dp/B0763WDSYZ

If you are set on making prints yourself, you should look to see if you can score a second hand printer at your local resale store or craigslist. I bought one off someone who was moving out of their apartment for 40 bucks. You can easily get off brand cartridges for much cheaper than the original ones, whatever model you get, do a quick search on amazon for replacement toner before you buy so you know how much replacement toner is. Whatever laser printer you get will be many times cheaper than inkjet.

Here is one example. Brother HL-L2350DW for about 100 bucks with a 4-pack of thrid party toner for 40 bucks. The estimated yield per cartridge is 3000 pages.

Ideally you shouldn't have to be supplementing for what the school isn't providing.
