Buy a laser printer. Something like this:

https://www.amazon.com/Brother-HL-L2340DW-Monochrome-Wireless-Replenishment/dp/B00LZS5EEI

It's a bit expensive but the cartridge lasts a lot longer than most.

There is a TON of things at SJSU that it can be overwhelming, as a 5th year student this year I am still finding new things on campus that I had no idea about. I’ve learned tons of tips and tricks through my years here that I really do wish I knew from the very beginning. Since we’re getting a whole new set of freshmen in the coming academic year I decided to share a ton of things I learned through my time.

Getting to School

The #1 thing you’ll hear when you sign up for SJSU, at least in my experience, is that there is never parking. While it is true that SJSU has a major parking problem, it isn’t true if you know how to handle it. The standard parking garages on campus, while nice and convenient due to their location, do fill up quickly and if you stop class after 9:30am you won’t find a spot. If you have a early class you should be fine.

Alternatives are SJSU Park and Ride which is a couple blocks from campus but is cheaper and always has parking. $96/semester is legit.

Another lesser known alternative is the City of San Jose: 4th Street Garage, which sells SJSU permits and always has parking available. It’s price is comparable to SJSU’s pricing. If you are coming to campus for only one class Safeway The Market offers 2 hour parking with ANY purchase, so buy a Soda and stay for one period. It’s cheaper than a permit.

Motorcycle parking is FREE on the streets surrounding SJSU, this is my personal choice as it’s the best parking on campus. You obviously would either need to have a bike or buy one to take advantage of this.

Lastly, consider public transit. The Light Rail is FREE for all students, and you can park at a Park and Ride for free and take the train to campus.

If you live downtown consider the Bay Area Bike Share, it offers affordable rental bikes when you need it without needing to lock it up on campus. The closest drop off to SJSU is near the library.

Passing your classes

Included in our tuition is a ton of services designed to help you pass your classes. The SJSU Peer Connections Program offers tutoring for classes to help you pass; I took advantage of this in my earlier years to help pass Calculus and it proved invaluable. You need to stop by for an appointment, but its quick and easy. They also offer mentoring which is useful for adjusting to college life if you’re coming from high-school. Also, their graduation workshops are a godsend.
Another area that’s very helpful is the SJSU Writing Center they will help you improve your writing skills, and for those in those difficult English or Writing classes they can help you pass.

Lastly the SJSU MLK Library offers FREE study rooms for students, perfect for group projects. Book a week in advanced for the best time slots. You can only reserve 1 hour at a time, but if you’re group is 3 people you could have it for 3 hours if you book back to back.

Programs for New Students

SJSU Offers Welcome Days for all new students. These days prove to be VERY useful for meeting people and learning about the campus.

If you're coming from High-school you may get recommended to take Science 2. DO NOT DO THIS. It's a total waste of time and does little to nothing to prepare you for college. If you've ever take an AVID course its like that, but with 10x more busy work.

Online Classes

It took me 2 years to realize this, but Online Only classes don't show up on mysjsu's class search as "Online", they in fact show up as a TBD under room number. If you want to take an online class look for that while searching for classes.

Food

On campus food, despite what people say, is alright. The Student Union offers solid food at reasonable prices. Who doesn’t like Taco Bell and Jamba Juice? We even just got a Starbucks on campus.

The Dining Commons is alright, but if you can forgo a meal plan you’ll save a ton of money and get better food around campus.

This is a solid list of all the places near campus. Most are plenty good and offer better food than that found on campus. San Jose has a TON of good food options.

Grocery Outlet is your friend if you’re looking for groceries for your dorm or apartment. It’s by far the cheapest store in the area for groceries. Also, beer is cheap too, usually $2 less than Safeway per 6-pack.

Jobs

Working while in school is not for everyone, but it really does help that Resume and gives you some money to spend on and around campus. If you can avoid taking out extra loans by working, you'll save thousands of dollars in the long run.

The SJSU Career center is very helpful in helping you find a job. Craigslist is also useful. You can find a ton of businesses hiring around downtown as well. Many companies work with students schedules.

I work full time and attend school 2 (long) days a week. This works for me, but may not work for you. I take 12 units and am doing just fine working full time, but everyone is different.

Really there are a ton of ways you can go about this.

Dating

Like a job, dating in school is not for everyone. Boyfriends and Girlfriends take a lot of time and add to the stress. They can also be very valuable for dealing with problems and can provide you with entertainment. It's really hit or miss.

Here is a list of some date ideas in San Jose that I made.

Also, if you have room-mates, please be smart about when and where you get intimate with your partner if you want to avoid very embarrassing situations, I know this one from experience.

Activities and Nightlife

You came to college to have fun, admit it! Alright, so most of us are here to study hard and work hard, but we all have to have some fun once in a while. Here is a guide I made of the best activities in San Jose for under $20 you’ll find a ton to do in San Jose.

For night life you have two Downtown districts dedicated to it. The SOFA area which is near the Convention Center offers a nice quiet bar scene with some good options. Haberdasher is a legit bar to take a date if you want to impress them. My personal favorite is San Pedro Square, tons of bars and very reasonable prices. SP2 offers a sweet happy hour with drunks under $6. Near SPS you find AFK Gamer Lounge to get your Video Game fix, and ISO Beers offers the biggest selection of beers that I know of in the area.

There is so much nightlife around SJSU you’ll never run out of ways to get drunk.

Bathrooms

I feel weird for writing this, but I’ve pooped in my fair share of bathrooms at school and some are definitely better than others. Avoid BBC, DMH, SH and the Library, all 4 buildings bathrooms are disgusting. The best bathrooms are Tower Hall 2nd floor, SSC, SU, ART, and YUH. If you prefer privacy there is a couple single occupancy rooms in MQH.

”Free” Perks

There is a ton of things included in our tuition that people don’t know about. The Lightrail is free, so is the city bus. You need to get a clipper card from Transportation Solutions.

There is reduced price OTC Medication that you can find at the Student Health Center. Allergy Med bottles as low as $2. They also also Tylenol, Midol, Lactaid, Nyquil, alka-seltzer, lube and pretty much everything else you can find at a pharmacy. Also the Health Center offers free condoms, though only up to 3 a day. Pregnancy and STD tests are also free (But damn it use a condom).

Adobe CC is free for all students which is over $50 a month at full price. You need to renew every year.
You can rent a laptop, or iPad and even Calculators for free from the MLK Library.

I know there are a ton more things included with our tuition. Feel free to comment and I’ll add to this list.

Another unknown service included in tuition is the Instructional Resource Center that gives students free rentals of audio/ video equipment such as classroom projectors, HD cameras, DSLRs, microphones, voice recorders etc etc.
It's located on the first floor of DMH! Use it!
Also, Microsoft Office 365 is provided free for all students now too. Just Google search "sjsu software downloads" for instructions on downloading. (/u/robcas65)

Printing

The cheapest printing on campus is your own I love mine, and it costs me less than $20 a year to run, you’ll thank me later.

If you must print on campus, check with your major. Most majors offer free lab which has a printer, most students get up to 500 pages a year for free.

A last resort should be the library, which is $0.10 a page.

Making Friends

This is the hardest part for a lot of people, especially commuters. My recommendation would be to join a club, join meetup.com, make an account on OkCupid or Tinder, and be friendly.

Final Thoughts

SJSU is a FANTASTIC school, don't let other people tell you otherwise. We're getting a great education at a fraction of the cost of a UC. A ton of people will give you shit for the school, but most people are ignorant.

I bought one of these for the convenience of having a printer. I print out my prelabs and whatever documents I need.

Brother toners are like $30 per toner and a standard toner can print 1,000 pages. The starter toner, the one that comes with the printer, lasts about 600 pages. For a $50 high capacity toner, they can print around 1,500 to 2,000 pages. I see myself having the printer for years so why not buy one now?

Go for laser printers. They have an expensive upfront cost they print tons of whatever so theyre very cheap to maintain. Only downside is they can't print in color. Ink jet printers are cheap but the ink is hella expensive.

u/h110hawk · 7 pointsr/AdviceAnimals

If you don't need color, $125 gets the job done. (They've gone up in price!) Disable wireless and mDNS/Bonjour and off you go:

http://www.amazon.com/Brother-HL-L2340DW-Monochrome-Wireless-Printing/dp/B00LZS5EEI/

Plug it straight into your router and now your whole home can print. No drivers required, select "Generic Postscript Printer."

I suggest disabling wireless and mDNS because they seem to universally crap out every few months.

if it comes with a cassette, you probably never need to change it, as it's something nuts.

i had an older model of this, and you might want to buy two casettes, because it probably runs out of production before you need another. in like 20 years or so.

u/photoresistor · 5 pointsr/Frugal

I just finally threw out my ink-jet printer and got an inexpensive Brother Laser printer

One High-Yield toner cartridge costs less than an ink cart refill and lasts me a year (in a household with four kids printing a LOT of stuff for homework on a regular basis). Plus its fast.

u/CA1900 · 5 pointsr/mac

http://www.amazon.com/Brother-HL-L2340DW-Monochrome-Wireless-Printing/dp/B00LZS5EEI

$90 shipped. Note that it comes with "starter toner" which only lasts 700 pages, but the high-yield cartridges are $49 and last 2600, making for very cheap printing.

I've been using a Brother HL-2170W for years, and the thing just won't die. I share it between two Macs and a Windows machine. No complaints at all.

u/zem · 5 pointsr/linux4noobs

highly recommend brother's monochrome laser printers. i have the HL-2280DW, but this one seems to be the current best-selling model on amazon, and looks good to me.

u/redrider93 · 4 pointsr/mac

I've had the same Brother laser printer for 6 years and I love it. It requires zero maintenance and always works even when I haven't used it for months.

This newer model has AirPrint.

This one is the one I've seen a lot of people with. It's laser and only prints in black and white, but most people don't need color (and when they do they just go to Newman to get color prints). You're going to need to get a usb cable though since VT wifi isn't very accepting of wireless printers. It cant scan though, so if you want a scanner you're going to have to pay a little more, but a lot of the time you can find a friend who has a scanner and save the extra buck.

u/goldragon · 4 pointsr/Wetshaving

Whatever you do, get a laser printer, not an inkjet. How many times did you go to print with your old inkjet printer and it wouldn't print because it said it was out of ink? Likely a lot of times, I would bet. Since you print so rarely the ink would dry out and clog the spray nozzles. And it would infuriate me when I had inkjets printers that if one color was "out" then it would refuse to print, even in black and white.

I got a Brother monochrome laser printer a few years ago and have loved it. Since laser printers use dry toner and not liquid ink then it can't dry out. The free starter toner cartridge lasted me over a year and now I am kinda sad I bought a standard toner cartridge because I would like to upgrade to a color laser all-in-one but can't really justify it as I don't really need it. I haven't really researched the subject since getting my Brother but I believe the company still has a good reputation for decent build quality, no non-sense features, etc.

u/geometrikos · 4 pointsr/Etsy

I use this Brother Laser Printer (wifi enabled) and use half sheet adhesive labels. I thought the dedicated label printers were too expensive and this allows me to print packing slips as well.

u/Dapado · 3 pointsr/todayilearned

I use a Brother HL-2270DW (Amazon link below, currently $86). The WiFi is easy to set up, and it can be set to automatically print on both sides of the paper. I buy off brand toner on Amazon for like $15, and I hardly ever have to replace it.

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00LZS5EEI/

Edit: The page count on my printer's web interface tells me that I have printed 5,918 pages and that I am on the third toner replacement. For reference, I leave "Toner Save" mode on all the time, and the $15 toner cartridges I buy are labeled as "high yield" toner.

u/sometimes_I_eat_bats · 3 pointsr/stencils
u/Jeffbx · 2 pointsr/techsupport

Best case is laser - toner is dry so it lasts forever. With your low volume of printing, it's no surprise that your ink is drying up.

My recommendation is to get yourself a basic B&W laser printer - this one is a good choice. You'll go a year or 2 before you have to replace the toner.

If your kids really need color for school, go with the color version

u/Stickfigs · 2 pointsr/techsupport

An inkjet uses nozzles to fire the ink directly onto the page.

A laser printer applies a charge to the paper so it will attract toner (a fine powder) onto the page where it is then fused to the paper with heat.

Toner is much more cost effective than ink.

If you print more than 10-20 pages a week. Get a laser.

If you don't print a lot AND need color get a inkjet.

Color multi-functions (scanner/fax/printer) are expensive for a laser both in initial investment and maintenance. Inkjet multifunctions can be bought on sale for 50 bucks then tossed when it breaks.

Rule of thumb, get a mono brother laser like this if you just need to print black and white. And a shitty multifunction inkjet as a backup printer/scanner with color.

I have a bunch of clients with this brother multifunction and it serves them quite well. Compatible toner/drums work well and they're quite durable

u/prodigyinspired · 2 pointsr/gadgets

Which printer? DCP-L2540DW or HL-L2340DW or HL-3170CDW?

DCP-L2540DW
HL-L2340DW
HL-3170CDW

Hey, new here. Planning to buy a laser printer for school as I need to print essays, reports and such, and sometimes I need color so preferably I want a printer with color. I looked around reddit and amazon and found these three.

The DCP has a scanner and more ppm than the others, and is only $10 more than the L2340, but I'm not an expert and maybe there's a catch here. But other than that I can't really see the difference other than price.

I don't need multi-function but it can be nice when I need to photocopy stuff.

u/squidboots · 2 pointsr/Etsy

I have a Brother HL-2270DW I picked up a few years ago for $80 and I adore it, but they don't make it anymore so they're much more expensive to buy now. According to Amazon it's been replaced by the HL-L2300DW. If you don't need the wireless connectivity the HL-L2300D is MUCH less expensive!

For toner, I buy the EPS high-yield cartridges for my printer (the HL-L2300 printers I linked to you take a different cartridge size than the HL-2270 printer I have.) I like EPS because they offer a lifetime warranty so if I get a dud refill they replace it for no charge. They are about 1/3 the price of the OEM Brother cartridges.

u/eviltimmy99 · 2 pointsr/apple

I heartily endorse this one:
Brother HL-L2340DW Compact Laser Printer with Duplex Printing and Wireless Networking
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00LZS5EEI

They just updated this model and it now works without being connected to any computer. Just needs to be on the same wifi network. AirPrint works wonderfully from all iDevices. Took me about 10 minutes to setup (read the AMAZON comments for tips and gotchas).

u/Sad_on_Solder · 2 pointsr/SJSU

I would recommend a printer B/W minimum because there will be moments where you need printouts asap and going to the library/engr everyday just to print is a pain. The brother laser B/W printer is super cheap. One toner cartridge lasts me a year for $11.

Printer (Laser B/W):

Toner (Lasts me a year):

If you really need color:

You can enroll this in HP instant ink where they send you ink cartilages when you run out for $7-10/mo depending on how many pages you print. The $10/mo is like 500 pages

u/CharrNorris · 2 pointsr/buildapcsales

Hijacking high comment to report that the price just dropped to $69.99 on Amazon

u/fratopotamus1 · 2 pointsr/Purdue

> Should I get a printer?

If you have some cash to spare, I picked up a cheaper monochrome laser printer (they print really nice, and toner is super cheap). Super convenient if I was in a rush, or didn't wanna leave my dorm room. I'd probably suggest it. Something like a Samsung or Brother.

> How would rushing work if I'm in an LC? Just wait til later?

Shouldn't interfere at all. I rushed first semester freshman year and was in an LC. There was a good number of guys all on my floor that joined different houses.

Full duplex, wireless, B&W laser for ~$110. Trust me, you'll be happy. Toner cartridges for these are inexpensive (~$48 for a high yield, 2600 page count) and the units last forever. I have an HL-2040 (earlier revision of this series) with over 100K print jobs.

Oh, and the toner won't go bad on you like ink will if you don't print for a month.

u/angel_anger · 2 pointsr/FulfillmentByAmazon

Printer wise I'd recommend a monochrome Brother printer for $100 if you need one. $20 in ink will last for 5 months. Works well with Avery labels for making ASIN stickers as well as shipping labels
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00LZS5EEI/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_awdb_sd5.zbHBFTCKZ

u/yomerol · 2 pointsr/videos

Yeah, laser printer, ever since I tried one I haven't gone back to ink, and Brother makes great BW ones(in my experience for now). Toner can be the same price as ink, but it lasts forever, even the HP one (when the moon was at the right position and printed) in general it gives you more prints for your buck.

Also if you print a lot and you don't care about the quality that much, you may use the generic ones. I have this one . The original toner is like $53 usd and the generic is $15

u/iheartshampoo · 2 pointsr/OSUOnlineCS

I don't print much, in this program or otherwise, but I do have a Brother laser printer (Brother HL-L2340DW https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00LZS5EEI/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_C-eFybBQ2D7D7). It's the best selling laser printer on Amazon for about $100. It has wireless, duplex printing, and airprint. I have it hidden and out of the way in a corner and can easily print from any of my devices. Can't recommend it enough.

u/BonkTink · 1 pointr/zines

The thing I love about zines is the infinite ways in which they can be made.

I draw mine digitally (used to use ink, switched to digital a few years ago), print them at home in black and white, on 8.5x11 (somtimes 5.5x4.25) with a duplexing Brother printer, staple them with a booklet stapler, crease them with a bone folder, then distribute them in various ways.

I used to run a zine subscription where I sent out a new, original zine each month to people who subscribed for ~$40. I also table at zine fests across the country. And I donate zines to any/all local zine libraries I can find.

I have illustration zines, lettering zines, and poetry zines, and I have noticed that poetry zines (aka "chapbooks") usually sell way less. I think it's because (in the U.S. at least) poetry is just undervalued in general (unfortunately).

u/liquidbiue · 1 pointr/PucaTrade

Thanks for all the input guys. I've been doing some research on cheap laser printers since I can use it for shipping and my girlfriend can use it for printing classwork out. I found this article (http://thewirecutter.com/reviews/best-cheap-printer/) about good, cheap laser printers. tldr: this is their recommendation: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00LZS5EEI

u/dougiefresh1233 · 1 pointr/aggies

I have this printer. It's a black and white laser jet and I love it. I've printed probably 500-600 pages (mostly resumes and textbook pages) and have yet to run out of toner. It prints fast and hasn't didn't require any set up past plugging it into the wall and my computer. If you need two sided or colored printing then you'll want to get something else, but this is fantastic for 90% of print jobs (and the on campus printing can handle the other 10%)

u/scoobyr00 · 1 pointr/FulfillmentByAmazon

I have a DYMO 450 turbo also and I mainly use 30334 size labels. Both Amazon and Inventory Lab will print this size.
***
>I've seen a lot of people basically taking snapshots on every label from a 30sheet which seems kind of wonky.

If you want to use the Dymo with Amazon directly you need to use Amazon's Scan & Label page. Inventory > Manage FBA Shipments, then near the top of the page look for Scan & Label

It prints out labels for one SKU at a time.

Since Chrome changed, it's a little more difficult but you pick the product you need a label for by scanning it or entering your SKU. Then you can either print it or save it. If you print, the chrome print window opens and you need to play with settings to make sure the label fits.

  1. Select the Dymo printer
  2. More Settings > select paper size. 30334 if you are using that size. If you don't see it, you need to print using system dialog
  3. No margins.

You only need to do this for the first label.

Inventory Lab is a lot easier. You run the printer setup under account settings to choose your label size. Then you choose if you want the label to print automatically when you list an item, or only when you click the print button.

Keep in mind, you are suppose to use removable labels when applying directly to the products. That said, Amazon doesn't follow their own rule here and I've learned that the longer removable labels are on, the less removable they are.

I've used a few label brands.

  • Best quality is the DYMO brand but they are absurdly expensive.
  • For permanent labels, I'm using https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IC8B5VA right now but I also have https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JPPLU32 sitting on the shelf. Both seem to work fine.
  • For removable labels I use https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CBAPJ30
  • I also have some 3.5 x 1.125 labels I rarely use on some specific larger items https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001AVNLHC

    ***

As far as printers: I use the Dymo 450 turbo and brother laser https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00LZS5EEI/

I use the laser printer for shipping labels mostly but sometimes for product labels if I'm sending like 80 of the same thing.

I spent a lot of time when I started, trying to decide what printer to get. I started with the laser because: 1. I can use it as a regular printer for non-fba stuff, 2. It will print both fnsku and shipping labels, 3. It is really inexpensive.

I added the DYmo later because: 1. I hated all the wasted labels if I wasn't printing a full sheet, 2. I do RA and matching labels from a sheet with 30+ different products is time-consuming, 3. I often need 1 or 2 labels and it was difficult to do on the laser.

I haven't looked in awhile but my dream printer would be a thermal transfer printer that is large enough to print shipping labels as well as fnsku. I just can't justify spending $500 on it.
u/hotdinner · 1 pointr/techsupport

I realize that I will eventually have to buy a new printer, but at least the heat trick will get me back up and working till I can buy a new one. Do you have a specific recommendation for a Xerox Phaser? If it is that good, I might just go for it.
Edit: What about something like this? (Amazon)

u/BeaverTron17 · 1 pointr/Portland

Like everyone is already saying. Laser printer. Ink cartridges cost more than the printer. It is literally cheaper to keep buying new printers. I got this one here

u/darkbyrd · 1 pointr/LifeProTips

>Agreed, but typically at far greater initial capital expense.

Isn't that the point of this thread?

$100 bucks, not much over the average bottom-end inkjet I see on amazon ($60-100)

I've had this printer for 5 years, three toner cartridges. Only time I had problems is when I didn't use the Brother-brand toner.

I have a Samsung ML-1710 that I got on a deal about... 6 years ago? Works great because I use it maybe once a year. Since it is a laser the ink doesn't dry out or become useless after a couple months. Eventually if I have to replace it I have been eyeing the Brother HL-L2340DW. It is cheap, wireless and does duplex printing.

I only sell on ebay, so my "set up" is simply using their shipping and my home laser printer. Looks like mine is going out of fashion, but it's a Brother and has the same specs as this:

Unless you're doing crazy volume it just doesn't make financial sense to invest in anything more. With a tape-gun in hand I'll match anybody with a thermal printer, and cost-wise you can't beat it.

Because printers start at about $100 for light duty black and white and go up from there. For household use, buy something like this. It will print reliably as long as you are below "small business" level needs. You will save a bundle printing color at a print shop / CVS and buying one toner every few years.

To put it another way, You're wondering why you get shitty pizza from an ezbake oven. :)

Brother HL-L2340DW Compact Laser Printer

Printed less than 100 pages with it. It is in excellent condition and will come with original box and accessories.

Bought this printer over two years ago and it’s still going strong with no issues.

$90, included a cartridge, and WiFi printing works every time.

Sits in the corner of our basement since we only print a few pages a month.

Changed over to a laser printer so the ink cartridges wouldn’t dry out between prints.

I hate having to have a printer, but this model has worked well for us.

Id get a laser printer, a higher initial cost, but the toner last 3x as much as ink and is less expensive. Id recommend a Brother printer, it isnt a scanner, but you could probably find a usb scanner pretty cheap.

When I started University I bought a Brother hl2250 dn black and white laser, probably one of the best decisions I made. It wasn't that expensive, it's a network printer, it has a duplexer unit and a refill toner for 5300 pages is €15. The driver is small, comes without any bloatware and just works. I also love that the paper tray holds about a full 500 pack of paper, so you don't have to constantly refill it.

I think that model isn't available anymore, but I'm sure they have a followup model.

Edit: Looks like the current itteration of that Printer is called HL-L2300D for the wired model, and HL-L22340DW for the wireless version.

Is $100 expensive? The wireless connectivity on the most entry-level Brother laser printer works just fine with iOS.

Are you SURE you NEED color?

Brother HL-L2340DW $90 27ppm b&w laser printer with auto-duplexing

You can get a Color Laser in the $200-250 range. But the replacement toner is going to cost almost as much as the printer.
