I recommend you start with "The Builders".

I believe it was /u/chodapp who stated it was the last great American Masonic book until the turn of the 21st Century, or something to that effect.

I agree with his assessment. After JF Newton, American Masonry suffered from the lack of any real rigor in the study of history or applied masonic philosophy.
