If you are interested in medicinal plants, this book is a classic: https://www.amazon.com/Medicinal-Plants-Pacific-Michael-Moore/dp/0890135398
I have the pacific northwest version of this book and it's great, the Cali version's well reviewed it looks like: https://www.amazon.com/California-Foraging-Flavorful-Evergreen-Huckleberries/dp/1604694203/
I'm sure there are many more good ones that I don't know about, but maybe some Californians can chime in, or you may want to make another post asking.
I'd focus on the difficulty of finding good water (and the importance of filtration), foraging / hunting for food (California Foraging: https://www.amazon.com/dp/1604694203/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apap_9veS73cZMK36R) and building shelter (teepees, yurts, longhouses etc. depending on environment)
