A bit too big for your pocket, but fits well in a backpack. I can put my GPD Win 2, the charger and cable, a tiny 4TB Ext HDD with USB 3 cables, a cleaning cloth. You could also have room for extra Micro SD cards that you could put into SD card adapters and then into the 3DS game card storage areas.

It fits 8 games, has a zippered container for the charger and other stuff like headphones, a loop for an extra stylus and holds it all comfortably without being tight.
I got one for my 8 y/o niece. Is there anything else I might need for her to get started? I got a protective case, Pokemon Sun, and Super Mario Maker. I assume these will be good starter games.

A 3DS case might work. It's got a zippered pouch you could put cartridges in. Obviously the game card slots would be useless.
