I currently have Changing the World is the Only Fit Work for a Grown Man: An Eyewitness Account of the Life and Times of Howard Luck Gossage: 'Sixties America's Most Innovative, Influential and Irreverent Advertising Genius on order. Have heard it's pretty good, might post a review in this subreddit once I've read it.
Gossage is an interesting guy, he was using half a dozen techniques decades before the rest of the industry caught up. Doing stuff that generated PR, social media, and creating "interactive" ads before the term "interactive department" was even dreamed of.
I find how-to books in advertising a bit iffy, and reckon that people are better off drawing inspiration than studying creative processes and the nitty gritty of how agencies operate. "I want to be like that guy/girl/team/agency that does amazing work" rather than "David Ogilvy worked on briefs like this, so I should too." It's a subtle difference. That's from a creative perspective, of course.
